The Sri Lankan captain, Dasun Shanaka, is philosophical in defeat. “Lot of positives,” he says. “Chameera bowled very well.” He certainly did: on a day when the winning captain used only four overs of seam, Chameera bowled four overs on his own and took five for 24.

Phil Salt then led England's successful chase with 46 off 35 balls as the tourists clinched victory in a low-scoring match that had been reduced to 17-overs-a-side following rain.

They were gunning for an 11th series or tournament win in a row, which includes the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Asia Cup 2025.

India made two changes, giving rest to Varun Chakravarthy and Arshdeep Singh. They brought in Jasprit Bumrah and Ravi Bishnoi, who last played for India in February 2025. It meant Axar Patel, who cut his index finger during the first T20I, continued to sit out. In the absence of a communication from the BCCI, it might be safe to assume it might be more preventive than forced.

Portsmouth 1-4 Arsenal: FA Cup third round – live

A hat-trick from Gabriel Martinelli helped Arsenal come from behind to beat Portsmouth with plenty to spare

Righto, Ed Aarons’ report is with us, which means we’re finished here.

In Scotland, SPL leaders Hearts scraped a 1-0 win at Dundee, playing the whole of the second half with 10 men and requiring a brilliant injury-time save from Craig Gordon to hang on to the points. They lead Celtic and Rangers by six points.

Mousinho reckons it was a contest for 65 minutes, but the better side won. Pompey’s goal came from an aggressive press and his team worked it well after that, but the defending at set-pieces wasn’t good enough. His players can take heart from how they played, but the injuries they’ve suffered are a problem for a thin squad.

Portsmouth 1-4 Arsenal (12 Jan, 2026) Game Analysis

Gabriel Martinelli hit the headlines for the right reasons by scoring a hat-trick as Arsenal overcame an early scare to thrash Championship strugglers Portsmouth 4-1 in the FA Cup third round.

Mikel Arteta's Premier League leaders fell behind less than three minutes into a rain-soaked contest at Fratton Park when Pompey captain Colby Bishop finished from close range.

Andre Dozzell's own goal quickly levelled the tie before Brazil forward Martinelli struck either side of Noni Madueke's penalty miss to put the Gunners in control.

Martinelli, who was widely criticised for attempting to push the injured Conor Bradley off the pitch during Thursday evening's goalless draw with Liverpool, completed his treble in the 72nd minute.

Every word Mikel Arteta said on Arsenal win over Portsmouth, Martinelli reaction, Havertz return

Mikel Arteta spoke to the media following his side’s win over Portsmouth in the FA Cup third round. Despite the gap between the sides domestically, it was by no means a simple task.

The Gunners, who had seen as many as ten changes from the side that drew with Liverpool on Thursday, were not given a warm welcome and fell behind quickly. However, they were bailed out by three beautifully crafted set pieces.

Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz made their cases for the centre-forward positions as Viktor Gyokeres watched on. Gabriel Martinelli scored his first-ever senior hat-trick for the club too.

FA Cup third round: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Macclesfield and Weston-super-Mare carry the non-league hopes while fringe players need to seize their chances

Silly goals conceded, chances missed, a lead surrendered and points squandered against relegation fodder. On the face of things, Manchester United have changed manager but nothing else. The reality is different. They started slowly at Burnley, settling into a 4-2-3-1 formation that suits them – and pretty much every other team – far better than Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 before, midway through the first half, they started to play. The deployment of Bruno Fernandes close to the opposition goal, along with a wide player, Patrick Dorgu, playing on his natural side, meant Benjamin Sesko was, for the first time, provided with decent service. Then, following Jaidon Anthony’s equaliser, Darren Fletcher’s side risked defeat by going all out for the win – one nearly achieved through the timely introduction of Shea Lacey, a richly talented 18-year-old. Brighton will present far stiffer opposition but, for the first time in a long time, United are doing what United are meant to do. Daniel Harris

The English FA Cup third round kicks off Friday, and it remains one of the most anticipated dates on the calendar — a weekend when non-league part-timers get the chance to realize the dream of playing — and beating — professional clubs, including the biggest teams in the Premier League.

It can be a weekend the top clubs dread given the risk of becoming the victim of a giant-killing, but it is the first step on the road to Wembley for the teams hoping to win the competition this season.
