Trump threatens to fire Fed chair Powell if he doesn't leave in May

US President Donald Trump has threatened to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell if he does not step aside at the end of his term in May.

The two have been embroiled in a bitter spat over Powell's reluctance to cut the central bank's interest rate, despite Trump's repeated calls.

Powell's term expires on 15 May, but he is planning to remain in post until his successor, Kevin Warsh, is confirmed by the Senate.

"Then I'll have to fire him," Trump told Fox Business, when asked about Powell's plans to stay on in the job.

"I've held back firing him. I've wanted to fire him, but I hate to be controversial," Trump said.

Iran threatens Bab al-Mandeb closure: How would that affect world trade?

If the chokepoint were shut, along with the Strait of Hormuz, a quarter of the world’s energy and a giant chunk of Asia’s exports to Europe would be blocked.

A top adviser to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has threatened that Iranian allies could shut the Bab al-Mandeb shipping route as Tehran has effectively done with the Strait of Hormuz.

The Bab-al-Mandeb connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is a crucial waterway for global oil trade. Its importance has increased since Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz – through which 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas is shipped in peacetime.

Rep. Don Beyer blamed the surge in gas prices on President Donald Trump's decision to wage "an illegal war against Iran with no plan or strategy."

As President Donald Trump continues threatening to commit war crimes in Iran by bombing power plants, Iran is signaling that it could put a further squeeze on global oil prices by shutting down yet another strait used for transporting petroleum outside the Middle East.

The undefeated Penrith Panthers have produced another supreme display to down Melbourne 50-10 at Western Sydney Stadium.

Thomas Jenkins scored his fifth double of the new season as the Storm conceded a half century of points for the first time since 2003 in what was their biggest defeat since the 2008 grand final.

"Definitely shocked at the score line," Ivan Cleary said in his press conference.

In one of the most complete displays in recent NRL history, the Panthers scored nine tries to two, with eight different try scorers as the Panthers laid down a marker to the rest of the competition, saying they are favourite to regain the premiership in October.

    Stat Attack: Panthers v Storm

The Penrith Panthers cemented themselves in the history books with a dominant 50-10 victory over the Storm, breaking multiple records in the process.

The win saw the Panthers become the first team in history to open a season with five straight victories by 20 points or more, while also recording their biggest ever win over Melbourne. Thomas Jenkins continued his remarkable run, becoming the first player in history to score 12 tries in the opening five rounds of a premiership season.

The Panthers produced a clinical attacking display, piling on nine tries in a well-rounded performance. Liam Martin and Freddy Lussick set the tone early before Jenkins crossed for a double, with further tries to Nathan Cleary, Casey McLean, Brian To’o, Luke Garner and Dylan Edwards sealing the result.

Penrith Panthers and Thomas Jenkins shatter records in stunning annihilation of Melbourne

The Penrith Panthers and Thomas Jenkins have shattered NRL records in a 50-10 flogging of Melbourne at CommBank Stadium.

Melbourne came into the match in unfamiliar territory having lost two in a row and that turned to three in an emphatic result.

Penrith's victory means they're the first team in premiership history to win their first five matches by 20 or more points. It was also the first time the Panthers have scored 50 against Melbourne and it was their biggest win against the side.

Live: Iran threatens to retaliate if Pentagon orders ground operation

Tehran is threatening to retaliate if US forces are deployed for a weeks-long operation in the Middle East.

US media reported overnight that the White House was considering such an operation, as the war between the US, Israel and Iran passed the one-month mark.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Israeli Defense Forces would expand their control of territory in southern Lebanon.

Trump threatens ‘more powerful and obnoxious’ tariffs, amid confusion in UK and EU; Wall Street drops – business live

Donald Trump has declared that he can use tariffs in a ‘much more powerful and obnoxious way’ than he has thus far.

Posting on his Truth Social network, the US president again attacked the supreme court for ruling against his sweeping global tariffs last Friday – calling them ‘incompetent’.

He also claims the justices have ‘‘accidentally and unwittingly’ expanded his presidential powers on tariffs.

double quotation markThe supreme court (will be using lower case letters for a while based on a complete lack of respect!*) of the United States accidentally and unwittingly gave me, as President of the United States, far more powers and strength than I had prior to their ridiculous, dumb, and very internationally divisive ruling.

Mad king: Trump just lost his superpower

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

Donald Trump lost his superpower last week, with the US Supreme Court applying the kryptonite.

Since regaining the presidency last year, Trump has wielded the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) as a multipurpose weapon, using it and the tariffs he imposed to not just force countries into extremely one-sided trade deals, but as geopolitical leverage.

Whether it was to coerce countries – including, indeed particularly, former close US allies – into massive trade and investment concessions under the threat of punitive tariff rates, or punishing Brazil for imprisoning his friend and ideological ally, Jair Bolsonaro, threatening Switzerland because he didn’t like the tone of a conversation with its president or European countries for not simply handing over Greenland, Trump weaponised IEEPA.

Shane Warne's plea back in spotlight as Cricket Australia braces for more bad news in Ashes finale

Cricket Australia, do you want the good news or bad news first? After estimated losses of $15 million due to the first and fourth Test of the Ashes series finishing within two days, nervous CA officials are praying the SCG New Year's Test goes the distance.

While not under any strict orders to prepare a "road", the SCG ground staff will present a pitch far removed from the grassy, Russian roulette of a deck that saw 36 wickets fall in two days of the truncated MCG Boxing Day Test. But the one thing no one can control is the weather – particularly in Sydney in early January.

Ashes weather Sydney forecast: Latest updates, SCG conditions for fifth Test – Australia vs. England

Australia and England play the fifth Ashes Test at the notoriously wet SCG in Sydney.

The annual match has regularly suffered rain delays and washouts in previous years, but the forecast is looking up this tine around.

Can England continue their momentum or will Australia put a footnote on the series?

Hot, humid and with a high likelihood of rain and a storm on the opening day.

Warm day with it being extremely unlikely that play is affected by wet weather.

If the Test makes it, it's likely to be a hot day with no rain.
