US president’s lawyers in court filing say Washington arts complex must undergo repairs or risk demolition

The John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts could be demolished if repairs are not carried out, Donald Trump’s administration warned in a court filing on Monday.

Lawyers for the US president said the national arts complex in Washington DC must undergo a $250m renovation or risk facing the wrecking ball.

“Without those efforts, the Center will deteriorate further into an unsafe, decrepit structure that will be required to be taken down, with a determination to follow on what to build on the site, such as a large outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River that has been proposed, by some, for many years,” they argued.

Extreme weather is drying up Europe’s rivers in a crisis so dire it can be seen from space

Relentless heat and a dearth of rain are having a punishing effect on some of Europe’s most vital rivers. The waterways have tumbled to record lows in places, in a crisis so severe it can be seen from space.

Stark satellite images reveal dramatically shrunken waterways weaving through parched landscapes. Low water levels have exposed vast stretches of riverbanks, as well as long sandbars usually hidden deep beneath the surface.

Comparisons with 2023, when European river flows were generally around average, show just how diminished some of these key waterways are.

Europe is the planet’s fastest-warming continent, and its summers are becoming ever more extreme as the human-caused climate crisis drives unprecedented high temperatures. Successive, brutal heat waves have sucked moisture from soils and waterways and continued drought has meant little relief.

Cruise passengers in certain locations have had their vacations disrupted due to record-low water levels on high-traffic rivers in Europe — stranding vessels and switching up itineraries.

The continent has experienced "above-average temperatures with an extensive and prolonged heatwave" in the first half of July, with drought conditions still persisting, according to the European Drought Observatory (EDO)'s website.

Jurgen Klopp: Germany boss threatens to quit new job if media invade family's privacy

Klopp's first game in charge will be against the Netherlands on 24 September

Jurgen Klopp started his reign as Germany's head coach by threatening to quit if the media invades his family's privacy.

The former Liverpool manager was appointed on a four-year deal on Friday to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned this month after Germany's shock World Cup defeat by Paraguay in the last 32.

But the 59-year-old issued a warning to the media as he held his first press conference as Germany's head coach.

"If you behave badly and don't leave my family in peace then I'll be gone, I'll just turn away," Klopp said.

Juergen Klopp has signed a deal until 2030 to become Germany coach and told a press conference in Frankfurt he was "delighted."

The former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool boss was the DFB's immediate first choice to succeed Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following the World Cup last-32 exit to Paraguay in June.

Klopp has been global head of soccer at the sports arm of drinks maker Red Bull, but will now lead Germany into the Nations League, qualifying for Euro 2028 in the British Isles and qualifiers for the 2030 World Cup. His contract will begin on August 15.

Iran threatens to block more trade routes as US launches fresh strikes

Iran has threatened to block further trading routes in the region, as the US launched a fresh wave of strikes on military targets.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said the Strait of Hormuz would remain shut until the US ended its "acts of aggression". They also threatened to close off other regional oil and gas export channels.

The warning came as the US military's Central Command (Centcom) said it had carried out drone, air and navy strikes on Iran on Wednesday morning, following another seven-hour operation overnight.

Fresh hostilities between the US and Iran in recent days have served to underscore the strategic importance of the Strait to the global economy.

‘Grasping at straws’: Trump’s Hormuz toll thought bubble didn’t last long – but the ramifications will

Donald Trump’s preposterous proposal to take control of the Strait of Hormuz and charge a 20 per cent toll for the privilege of crossing safely lasted all of 24 hours.

It was always a non-starter – for one thing, a 20 per cent charge on the value of a ship’s cargo was a silly number, plucked from nowhere. It would have added about $US16 to the cost of a barrel of oil overnight, according to analysts.

Trump now says the US will protect the strait but Gulf countries that heavily depend on it – Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain – will invest more in the US to cover the costs of that protection.

Trump threatens to ‘blow up’ Oman amid talks over strait of Hormuz

US president calls on US ally to ‘behave … or else we’ll have to blow them up’ in casual aside during cabinet meeting

Donald Trump has threatened to “blow up” Oman if it fails to “behave” in a casual aside during a cabinet meeting, as the US scrambles to reopen the strait of Hormuz.

The US president made the threat after reports of talks between Iran and Oman about jointly charging a toll for ships passing through the crucial waterway, which has been all but closed since the start of the US-Israel war on Iran.

“The strait is going to be open to everybody,” Trump declared on Tuesday. “Nobody’s going to control it. We’re going to watch over it. We’ll watch over it. But nobody’s going to control it. That’s part of the negotiation that we have.”

United States President Donald Trump appeared to threaten to attack US ally Oman if it sides with Iran over reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump said Oman must "behave" or he would "blow them up," when he was asked on Thursday AEST if he would accept a short-term deal to allow Iran and the Gulf state to control the waterway.

"No, the strait is going to be open to everybody," Trump told reporters during a cabinet meeting at the White House.

Trump threatens to fire Fed chair Powell if he doesn't leave in May

US President Donald Trump has threatened to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell if he does not step aside at the end of his term in May.

The two have been embroiled in a bitter spat over Powell's reluctance to cut the central bank's interest rate, despite Trump's repeated calls.

Powell's term expires on 15 May, but he is planning to remain in post until his successor, Kevin Warsh, is confirmed by the Senate.

"Then I'll have to fire him," Trump told Fox Business, when asked about Powell's plans to stay on in the job.

"I've held back firing him. I've wanted to fire him, but I hate to be controversial," Trump said.

Iran threatens Bab al-Mandeb closure: How would that affect world trade?

If the chokepoint were shut, along with the Strait of Hormuz, a quarter of the world’s energy and a giant chunk of Asia’s exports to Europe would be blocked.

A top adviser to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has threatened that Iranian allies could shut the Bab al-Mandeb shipping route as Tehran has effectively done with the Strait of Hormuz.

The Bab-al-Mandeb connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is a crucial waterway for global oil trade. Its importance has increased since Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz – through which 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas is shipped in peacetime.

The undefeated Penrith Panthers have produced another supreme display to down Melbourne 50-10 at Western Sydney Stadium.

Thomas Jenkins scored his fifth double of the new season as the Storm conceded a half century of points for the first time since 2003 in what was their biggest defeat since the 2008 grand final.

"Definitely shocked at the score line," Ivan Cleary said in his press conference.

In one of the most complete displays in recent NRL history, the Panthers scored nine tries to two, with eight different try scorers as the Panthers laid down a marker to the rest of the competition, saying they are favourite to regain the premiership in October.

    Stat Attack: Panthers v Storm

The Penrith Panthers cemented themselves in the history books with a dominant 50-10 victory over the Storm, breaking multiple records in the process.

The win saw the Panthers become the first team in history to open a season with five straight victories by 20 points or more, while also recording their biggest ever win over Melbourne. Thomas Jenkins continued his remarkable run, becoming the first player in history to score 12 tries in the opening five rounds of a premiership season.

The Panthers produced a clinical attacking display, piling on nine tries in a well-rounded performance. Liam Martin and Freddy Lussick set the tone early before Jenkins crossed for a double, with further tries to Nathan Cleary, Casey McLean, Brian To’o, Luke Garner and Dylan Edwards sealing the result.
