Taylor Sheridan's Brutal Crime Thriller With Emily Blunt Is Taking Over HBO Max A Decade Later

Having created a raft of hugely popular neo-Western series, Taylor Sheridan is Paramount's golden boy. Soon, however, he'll leave Paramount for NBCUniversal following a 2025 deal he struck with the latter. In the meantime, he's currently proving popular over on HBO Max. Sheridan's best movie has just crept onto the film charts and looks set for a modest renaissance more than a decade after its debut.

"Sicario" is easily Sheridan's finest film. Though 2016's "Hell or High Water" is one of the great modern neo-Western movies and his 2017 directorial debut "Wind River" gave us Jeremy Renner at his best, "Sicario" is the movie that introduced Sheridan as a writing powerhouse. Of course, it helped immensely that Denis Villeneuve was directing. The Canadian filmmaker took Sheridan's story of a young female FBI agent forced to push her morals to their limit and delivered a haunting action thriller that lingers in the mind long after viewing. Led by a standout performance from Emily Blunt, the movie remains one of the best of the 2010s, which is why it's not at all surprising to see it garnering attention over on HBO Max.

Taylor Sheridan's best action movie just shot its way onto the streaming charts.

For many, Sheridan will be best known as the mastermind behind the Yellowstone universe, which continues in the form of spinoffs Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Sheridan also created shows like The Madison, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman. Outside of his work in TV, Sheridan is also accomplished in the realm of feature films, writing movies like Hell or High Water (2016), Wind River (2017), and Without Remorse (2021). While the wait continues for the Sheridan-penned Call of Duty movie, one of his most acclaimed movies is experiencing a resurgence with viewers.

If there’s a universal truth to agree upon in our divisive age, it’s that child traffickers are scum of the earth and thus well-positioned to serve as fodder in modern action cinema.

Thus, the premise of Kenji Tanigaki’s new movie, “The Furious“: When mute tradesman Wang Wei’s (Xie Miao) daughter, Rainy (Yang Enyou), is taken from him in broad daylight by members of just such an organization, he goes on a tear through Bangkok’s criminal underworld to rescue her, brutalizing any man foolish enough to get in his way with precision martial artistry (and his trusty claw hammer) in the process.

The Best Action Movie Of 2026 Has A 99% Rotten Tomatoes Score And Is Out Today

While there are dozens of action movies out each year, some rise above others, and there’s a new one that’s out this weekend may be one of the best we’ve seen in years. It currently has a 99% Rotten Tomatoes score from 83 critics, one of the highest marks of the entire year, plus a 96% audience score on top of that.

The movie is The Furious, the hardcore martial arts film with a deep pedigree of genre talent, and is being compared to something as impactful as The Raid, released 15 years ago in 2011. Not to say it’s the best since then, but I mean, maybe? Or at least it’s in the conversation.
