Kevin Durant on Thunder's physicality: I don’t think they do too much, anything extra

Clemente Almanza: Kevin Durant on OKC’s physicality: “No, no, no different than any other group. They play with physicality for sure, but that’s what championships organizations do. I don’t think they toe the line or anything. I just think they just play swarming basketball; they all rush to the ball. They play physical off the ball. They got great hands. They got good block shot blocking center. I don’t think they do too much, anything extra. I just think they play together and know how to swarm the basketball.”

Kevin Durant Defends Thunder Defense Amid NBA Criticism

The Oklahoma City Thunder are making headlines across the NBA, not just for their winning ways, but for the fiery debate swirling around their defensive identity. With a five-game winning streak under their belts and a reputation for relentless, swarming defense, the Thunder have become the talk of the league—sparking both admiration and controversy. But as the chatter intensifies, it’s none other than former Thunder superstar Kevin Durant who’s stepped up to defend his old squad, offering a perspective that might just shift the narrative.

On January 15, 2026, Oklahoma City delivered a commanding 111-91 victory over the Houston Rockets, marking their fifth consecutive win and further cementing their status as one of the NBA’s premier defensive units. The win, orchestrated under the watchful eye of head coach Mark Daigneault, was a showcase of the Thunder’s trademark physicality, crisp rotations, and competitive edge. Their style—often described as a throwback with a modern twist—has drawn both praise and criticism, with some opponents and fans accusing them of crossing the line into overly physical play.

Kevin Durant shockingly defends Thunder from one of their biggest criticisms

Over the past few years, the OKC Thunder have built up a reputation of being a highly physical group that, as Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch put it, fouls "all the time."

Earlier this week, Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama continued peddling this widespread belief when he told reporters, "I'm going to be sore in a few places tomorrow for sure," following their January 13 matchup.

However, in a rather shocking turn of events, the Sooner State's own Benedict Arnold, Kevin Durant, has publicly taken a stand in opposition to this narrative.

After being bested by the Thunder via a 111-91 blowout on Thursday night, the Rockets' star was asked by members of the media whether he believes OKC is "more grabby and foul-prone" than other clubs in the league.

Thunder 119-98 Spurs (14 Jan, 2026) Game Recap

OKLAHOMA CITY — — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 34 points, and the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder beat San Antonio 119-98 on Tuesday night to earn their first win in four tries against the Spurs this season.

Jalen Williams added 20 points and Chet Holmgren chipped in eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for Oklahoma City. The Thunder improved to a league-best 34-7 at the midway point of the season — on pace to match last season’s 68-14 regular-season finish.

Stephon Castle scored 20 points and Victor Wembanyama added 17 points and seven rebounds for the Spurs.

San Antonio started the night in second place behind Oklahoma City in the Western Conference standings. The Spurs announced their presence as a title contender with the three wins over the Thunder in a two-week span last month, but now they have lost six of 10.

‘Not our Super Bowl’: Reigning MVP’s defiant call in Thunder’s crucial drought-breaking Spurs win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 34 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder snapped a three-game losing streak against the San Antonio Spurs with a 119-98 victory over their Western Conference rivals on Tuesday.

San Antonio have been the NBA champions’ bogey team this season, winning all three of their previous meetings last month with a series of wins that hinted at a tilt in the balance of power in the West.

But the Thunder’s potent offence and stifling defense finally got the upper hand over the Victor Wembanyama-led Spurs at Oklahoma City’s Paycom Center.

OKC Thunder Have the Next Jalen Brunson, and Will Lose Him in NBA Free Agency?

A pair of notable NBA experts suggested this week that Oklahoma City Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell will be similar to Jalen Brunson. A talented and underrated reserve who became a superstar after leaving for a big contract in NBA free agency.

The Thunder have had an outstanding start to the 2025-26 season. After reaching the NBA Finals and winning the franchise’s first championship in the spring, this year’s team has been even better. They enter the weekend with a 26-5 record and are on pace to set a new single-season record for wins.

Unsurprisingly, their outstanding play has been led by their elite defense. However, this season they have gotten even better on offense as top star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is again playing at an MVP level, and Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams are playing like borderline All-Stars. Yet, one player who has been key in their offensive growth and is slipping under the radar nationally is guard Ajay Mitchell.

Bill Simmons nominates Ajay Mitchell for NSFW honor

Even to die-hard OKC Thunder fans, the astronomic rise of Ajay Mitchell in 2025-26 has caught everyone by surprise.

So much so, in fact, that The Ringer's Bill Simmons believes he deserves to be in the running for a new, made-up honor called the "Where The F*ck Did You Come From" award.

During a recent edition of The Bill Simmons Podcast, the eponymous host discussed some of the biggest breakthrough players of the year so far, noting how all names mentioned logged fewer than 15 minutes per game a season ago before bursting onto the scene during this year's campaign.

“It's hard to establish yourself and be on the gas on …

After the win, Daigneault responded to Mitchell's perfect shooting performance and his role with the Thunder this season. “He's obviously a very talented player and a really impactful player, really efficient player,” Daigneault said. “It's hard to establish yourself and be on the gas on a team that's really good — a team that's pretty established that you're coming into. And he's found an unbelievable blend and has threaded a very nice needle of asserting himself, and really not flinching. “Not being afraid, and being on the gas, but also doing it in a way that's not inappropriate with what the rest of the team is doing. He's got a great diet on that. It's really impressive, and he competes on the other end. So, it makes it really easy to ride with him. He played a great game tonight,” Daigneault concluded.

Thunder have a Jalen Williams problem they desperately need to solve

OKC Thunder star Jalen Williams is 13 games into his 2026 season after sitting out the first stretch due to offseason wrist surgery.

Many lobbied for patience when it came to giving the forward time to reacclimate, but now, roughly a month in, some fans may be starting to sound the alarm.

On the surface, J-Dub's numbers look fine. He's shooting 45.0 percent from the field and has similar assist and rebounding numbers to his All-Star campaign last year.

However, it has been his performance against higher-level competition that has raised concerns.

Jalen Williams has struggled significantly against teams with a winning record. He is shooting a dismal 38.7 percent against these contending teams, which is well below his overall per-game season averages.

How Jalen Williams Can Be Effective As Jump Shot Slow to Come Around

2025 was unforgettable for Jalen Williams. It was his first All-Star nod, first All-NBA and All-Defensive honors, and he won his first NBA Championship while getting his number retired at Santa Clara along the way. He did most of that work on torn ligaments in his wrist. That led to offseason surgery where he also had to get screws removed from his wrists before the season began before ultimately returning to the hardwood on Nov. 28 playing in the last 15 games for the Bricktown Ballers.

This season, Williams is not yet putting up those All-NBA level numbers. The fourth-year swingman is averaging 17.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.7 steals and 0.5 blocks per game while shooting 45% from the floor, 31% from deep and 84% at the line. His points and field goal percentage are at their lowest point since his rookie season.

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault on how Jalen Williams can continue being great

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault on how Jalen Williams can continue being great originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are still the favorites to win the championship, as they continue to defend their title. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander remains the team's best player, as he is one of the favorites to win the regular-season MVP.

While the reigning regular-season and Finals MVP is on the team, the Thunder are a great team because of their supporting cast. This season, the supporting cast has been great, but it is not reaching the heights of the previous campaign. Case in point, Jalen Williams is not having the best season, but everyone knows he has the potential to break out and be a star again.
