Kevin Durant's climb towards Michael Jordan and Top 5 all-time scoring spot

The 16-time All-Star and 2-time Finals MVP is approaching a new level of hoops immortality — Top 5 on the all-time scoring list.

The Association's experts reflect on Kevin Durant's scoring totals and his overall career.

How many players get the chance to top Michael Jordan in anything basketball-related, from championships to MVPs to even shoe sales?

Not often. Except in the coming days, he’ll get leapfrogged by Kevin Durant, who will climb the mountaintop known as the NBA’s all-time career scoring list and give it some fresh Air. Durant needs 69 points to surpass Jordan (32,292 career points) entering Wednesday’s game against the Lakers (9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN). That would put Durant at No. 5 overall on the chart and, even for a scoring savant like Durant, this is quite the flex.

Kevin Durant Says Michael Jordan Got ‘Sick Of The Game’ While LeBron James Never Stopped Playing

Kevin Durant did not take a shot for attention. He said something simple, but it hit at the center of one of basketball’s biggest debates. His point was clear. Michael Jordan stepped away when the game wore him down. LeBron James never did.

That difference matters more than people admit. In an interview with Michael Lee of The Ringer, Durant said:

“It’s true. MJ took time off. It’s times where he was like, ‘I’m sick of the game. I want to take time off and regroup and come back into the game.’ And that’s what he did. Bron, he played straight through. I’m sure it was times when he was sick of the game and didn’t want to play. Sick of all the b.s. that come with the game.”

"MJ got sick of the game" – Kevin Durant explains why LeBron James’ longevity is a different kind of greatness

Kevin Durant, now in his 19th season, stands just 68 points away from passing Michael Jordan for fifth place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. What makes the feat even more striking is that he is poised to reach it with nearly 1,700 fewer shot attempts.

The Houston Rockets forward is still playing MVP-level basketball this season, even at 38, while his team is a serious contender to go all the way. On that path, KD will only further cement his status as one of the greatest scorers of all time.

However, in an interview with “The Ringer”, the 16-time NBA All-Star touched on longevity. Michael Lee asked him how he now views a comment he made on the “Mind the Game” podcast, in which he pointed out that the Chicago Bulls icon retired at his peak.

New research suggests older people have more progressive views on women’s rights than younger generations. This direction of travel is deeply concerning

It is usually assumed that young people are more liberal than older generations. Not according to startling new research carried out in 29 countries, including the UK, that suggests that almost a third of gen Z men believe that a wife should always obey her husband. A similar number say a husband should have the final say on important decisions.

Although those stats are for a 29-country average, it seems to reflect worries about a masculinity crisis among young men in the UK. What century are we living in? It could be a snapshot from the 1970s, but the figures are from a survey published this week by Ipsos and the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London. But even five decades ago, men in the UK who expressed such views could expect to be laughed at. They were swimming against the tide, as legislation was passed outlawing sex discrimination and creating a (theoretical) right to equal pay.

Social media plays 'huge role' in promoting traditional gender views, say experts

Gen Z men are more likely than their Baby Boomer counterparts to believe wives should "obey" their husbands, a global study by Ipsos and King's College London suggests.

The study, which surveyed 23,000 people worldwide, shows that as many as 31% of men in their teens and twenties believed "a wife should always obey her husband", while 13% of older men aged 60 and over agreed with the same statement.

People from 29 countries took part, with the UK generally having more progressive views overall than the average of countries in the study.

In interviews with BBC News, the study's co-author says social media has played a "huge role" in changing attitudes worldwide, while a UK-based women's rights group says the statistics show we are "going in the wrong direction".
