A new Trump Tower on the Gold Coast would be Australia’s tallest building, the organisation run by US president Donald Trump’s family has announced.

The development – built in partnership with a local developer – would rise 91 storeys and about 335 metres above Surfers Paradise. It would have a 285-room hotel, about 270 residences and retail and dining space.

A “private” beach club is also promised, in what would appear to follow a model floated by Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.

“We are thrilled to bring this vision to the vibrant Gold Coast community,” Eric Trump, son of the president, said in a statement.

It’s official: a Trump tower is coming to Australia, and it has the potential to become the country’s tallest building.

After weeks of speculation, Trump Organisation announced on Monday it had signed a hotel management agreement with Queensland developer Altus Property Group to build a 91-storey hotel and residential tower on the Gold Coast.

Mystery tower fossils may come from a newly discovered kind of life

Towering Prototaxites ruled Earth before trees—and they may have been a form of life entirely new to science

Reconstruction of Prototaxites taiti, which could reach the height of a telephone pole, growing in the 407-million-year-old Rhynie chert ecosystem.

Before trees came along some 400 million years ago, our planet’s landscape was dominated by enigmatic, spire-shaped life-forms that towered more than 25 feet above the ground. Their trunklike fossils were discovered in 1843. Yet despite more than a century of speculation, scientists have struggled to answer the most basic question about Earth’s original terrestrial giants: What were they?

Mysterious Giants Could Be a Whole New Kind of Life That No Longer Exists

Ever since their discovery more than 165 years ago, massive fossilized structures left by an organism known as Prototaxites have proven impossible to categorize.

Researchers in the UK have suggested in a recently published study that there's a very good reason these oddities don't fit neatly on the tree of life – they belong to a branch all of their own, with no modern equivalent.

Some 400 million years ago, the swamps of the late Silurian period would have sprouted a mix of horsetails, ferns, and other prototype plants that look positively alien today.

Among them stretched 8-meter (26-foot) tall towers that defy easy identification. Wide and branchless, these organisms may have been a form of algae or ancient conifer, researchers suspect, based on what little evidence remains.

Prototaxites are something of a prehistoric mystery. They were the first giant organisms on land, towering over ancient landscapes at heights of up to 8 meters. They had smooth trunk-like pillars and no branches, leaves or flowers. And unlike trees, they had no true root system. Instead, they may have been anchored to the ground by a simple bulbous base.

Since their first fossils were discovered in the mid-19th century, scientists have argued over their place in the tree of life. Are they giant fungi, massive algae or some kind of plant? But new evidence has emerged that may help settle the matter once and for all. Or will it just add more fuel to the debate?
