It Appears Toyota’s Last Affordable Purist Car Is Losing Its Famous Subaru-Sourced Engine

The GR86 is likely going to lose the “baru” part of the “Toyobaru.”

Toyota’s current affordable sports coupe could lose one of its signature features: its Subaru-sourced boxer engine. Word comes from Japan’s BestCar magazine, which reported on the next-gen GR86’s plan.

In a bit of a shocking move, it will be replaced by something that’s both conventional and partially futuristic: a gas-electric hybrid powertrain. The latest development confirms Toyota’s ambitiously big plans for the GR86.

It wasn’t too long ago that rumors began surfacing regarding the next-gen GR86’s powertrain. Those same rumors hinted at the prospect of hybridization, making fans and sports car enthusiasts, including us at the GP Motoring desk, skeptical and worried.

Toyota Camry-beating price for BYD's first Aussie hybrid that's not an SUV or ute

BYD has announced Australia's cheapest station wagon alongside a cut-price Toyota Camry Hybrid rival, due in showrooms later this year.

BYD will undercut the Toyota Camry Hybrid with the Seal 6, a new plug-in hybrid sedan and wagon promising more than 1300km on a tank of fuel.

Unrelated to the electric BYD Seal sedan – which remains on sale – the Seal 6 is similar in size to a Camry or Mazda 6, and is the fifth plug-in hybrid sold by BYD in Australia.

Prices start from $34,990 plus on-road costs for the entry-level Seal 6 Sedan Essential, and rise to $39,990 plus on-roads for the Seal 6 Touring Premium wagon, with a longer electric-only driving range and a more practical body.

BYD has confirmed pricing and specifications for its Seal 6 sedan and wagon pair.

The new plug-in hybrid pair arrive in one grade each. The Seal 6 Sedan Essential is the price leader at $34,990 (before on-roads) with a smaller 10.08kWh battery, and the Seal 6 Touring Premium steps up to $39,990 before on-roads with a larger 19kWh battery pack.

The sedan can travel 55km in EV mode, while the wagon can travel 100km in EV mode, both according to the generally more accurate WLTP standard.

2026 BYD Seal 6 will be Australia's cheapest PHEV sedan and cheapest wagon

BYD is gunning for the Toyota Camry with its sharply priced new mid-size plug-in hybrid Seal 6 sedan and wagon.

The onslaught of new BYD models continues, with the Seal 6 Sedan and Seal 6 Touring plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) locked in for an Australian launch.

Available to order from April 9, 2026, the mid-size PHEV sedan and wagon range will be available in just two variants.

The Seal 6 Sedan will come here only in Essential trim and, with a price tag of $34,990 before on-road costs, it will not only be Australia’s cheapest PHEV sedan but also undercut even the Toyota Camry Hybrid by $5000.

A new generation of Australia's best-selling SUV, the Toyota RAV4, is due here next year, offering plug-in hybrid power and a GR Sport flagship for the first time.

Due here before the end of the first quarter (January to March) of 2026, the new RAV4 will be offered in six model grades across the lineup, including front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) versions with hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options.

2026 Toyota RAV4: Australian pricing announced ahead of early 2026 deliveries

Australian pricing for the 2026 Toyota RAV4 has been revealed ahead of its local launch in the first quarter of 2026. Priced from $45,990 plus on-road costs for the entry-level GX 2WD, the cost of entry to the RAV4 range has climbed by $3730 compared with the current model thanks to extra standard features.

As announced in September 2025, the Australian lineup for the new RAV4 has grown with the addition of new plug-in hybrid models, including the top-spec GR Sport. The entry-level GX and second-tier GXL continue as before, but the former top-spec Edge is now a mid-spec grade, with the XSE and Cruiser sitting above it. The GR Sport, Edge and XSE Hybrid are equipped with all-wheel drive as standard, with every other model also available as a front-driver.
