    Ebola outbreak on track to be deadliest ever, WHO chief says

    The current outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo is on track to surpass the deadliest outbreak of the disease ever, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

    Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters that the 2026 outbreak, "at its current pace", would "eclipse" that of the 2014-2016 occurrence, which killed at least 11,000 people.

    The outbreak this year, declared on 15 May, has seen at least 4,300 cases and caused more than 2,000 deaths.

    The WHO said on Wednesday it hoped to reverse the spread of the disease within three months but warned that this meant bringing transmission under control – not ending the outbreak entirely.

    Outbreak to eclipse West Africa’s Ebola outbreak of 2014 to 2016 if it continues at current pace, WHO chief says.

    The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) is spreading faster than health authorities can contain it and is on track to become the deadliest on record, according to the World Health Organization.

    WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that at its current pace, the outbreak is on track to eclipse the West African Ebola outbreak of 2014 to 2016, a crisis that killed more than 11,000 people and accelerated the push to develop a vaccine.

    The outbreak in eastern DR Congo has killed more than 2,000 people out of more than 4,300 recorded cases, making it the fastest-moving Ebola outbreak on record. It was formally declared on May 15, though genetic sequencing later revealed the virus had actually begun circulating in February.

    Ebola toll passes 2000, cases rise to 4449 in DR Congo

    At least 2000 people have died in ⁠Democratic Republic ​of Congo's Ebola outbreak, the fastest-growing on record, according to the latest data.

    Government data published overnight showed the outbreak has 4449 confirmed cases, including 2061 deaths.

    Starting from the first confirmed case, the death toll was reached almost three times faster than in the 2014-16 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the worst on record.

    That’s what Sydney Airport is banking on by announcing a new Fast Track security access pass that will cost travellers $20.

    Business and First class flyers already have access to the Priority Security lane at Sydney International Airport, which allows them to skip the general queue.

    All Aussies get $20 airport perk once reserved for first and business class

    Everyone plans to arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare before a flight.

    But travel has a funny way of throwing unexpected delays into the mix.

    And sometimes, what was meant to be a stress-free departure quickly unravels into a mad rush.

    Now, for $20, passengers can jump the queue to ensure they take off on time at Sydney Airport, a perk once reserved for business and first class passengers.

    Announced this week, the new Fast Track service aims to give travellers greater "control" over their airport journey, and it can be purchased in advance.

    "Fast Track is a service that gives customers priority access at the main security screening point at Sydney Airport's T1 departures," the airport states.

    Lauding "lethal" Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow's freakish speed and talents, Queensland great Greg Inglis is all but resigned to losing his all-time State of Origin try-scoring record to the Hammer. 

    Inglis needed 32 matches to amass his 18 four-pointers during an illustrious 10-times series-winning Origin career spanning from 2006 to 2018.

    Tabuai-Fidow, known as "Hammer", has already nailed 13 tries from 12 games, including one in each match of this year's series that will be decided at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night.

    When Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow made his way into Maroons camp, fresh off producing a miraculous try-saving tackle on Kurt Capewell, he made a beeline for his Queensland teammate.

    “I had a chat to him when we first got in, but there wasn’t too much – I just told him ‘don’t step into me again’,” Tabuai-Fidow laughed.

    There is every chance Tabuai-Fidow will end next season as a State of Origin legend, and yet somehow, he’s still viewed as underrated.

    WESTERN Bulldogs star Cody Weightman is on the cusp of making a long-awaited return after 20 months on the sidelines, while Tim English is yet to clear concussion protocols ahead of Saturday night's clash against Collingwood. 

    Weightman hasn't played since the 2024 elimination final loss to Hawthorn due to a nightmare run of operations on his knee, stemming from a rare congenital condition called bipartite patella. 

    The 25-year-old has completed full training across May and now the club is favoured to bring him straight back in at AFL level over the next fortnight. The clash against Hawthorn next Friday night is the most likely outcome, but this weekend is also being considered.

    Plain English: Dogs make call after session

    Star ruckman Tim English trained the house down on Thursday and is ready to play for the Western Bulldogs against Collingwood on Saturday night.

    Track watchers were so positive about English's move out of concussion protocols, his official selection will be one of the least surprising developments in recent weeks.

    Concussion symptoms that have kept him out of the past two fixtures. He was concussed late in the win against Port Adelaide.

    The Western Bulldogs are set to wait one more week before playing small forward Cody Weightman for the first time in 21 months.

    While there was a temptation to play the star small forward this weekend against Collingwood, the Western Bulldogs have decided patience is best given Weightman's long history with injury.

    A $15 million plan to turn Orange's disused trotting track into a greyhound course was approved by a planning panel last week, despite community and council opposition.  

    Greyhound Racing NSW says it may not register the new track, citing falling breeding rates, commercial viability and sustainability concerns. 

    Greyhound Racing New South Wales has warned that a newly approved track in the state's Central West is unlikely to receive registration due to challenges facing the sport.

    The $15 million "Centre of Excellence" in Orange was approved by the state government's Western Regional Planning Panel (WRPP) on April 21.

    A fresh threat has emerged that could derail the possibility of greyhound racing happening in Orange.

    On April 21, the Western Region Planning Panel unanimously granted development approval for a greyhound racing track to be built at 32 Perc Griffith Way.

    It was this decision which led many to believe that greyhounds would soon be racing in Orange once more.

    But less than a week after that monumental decision, the CEO of Greyhound Racing NSW put out a message which could signal the project's demise.

    ‘LEAVE NOW’: Shelter opens as cyclone approaches WA town

    An urgent weather warning has been issued to residents living in WA’s north as a tropical low system continues to intensity off the coast.

    An evacuation centre is open at Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre. Another evacuation centre will open at 8am on Saturday January 24 at the Derby Civic Centre.

    DFES released a statement on Friday evening warning that people in Dampier Peninsula should leave now if not prepared.

    “Locals and travellers within the warning area should reconsider travel plans over the Australia Day long weekend due to the forecast crossing of a tropical cyclone. Roads and tracks in the area may become impassable or could close with little notice,” the statement said.

    Australia announce squad for Pakistan T20Is

    Australia's Pat Cummins will be kept on ice until a few games into the Twenty20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka as selectors take a cautious approach with the pace veteran's recovery from a lower back injury.

    Cummins returned to action during the third Ashes test in Adelaide but missed the last two matches against England and will skip Australia's T20 warm-up matches against Pakistan.

    Selectors' chief George Bailey confirmed that pace bowlers Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Ellis, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell and hard-hitting batter Tim David will also be rested from the three-match series against Pakistan in Lahore, which starts on January 29.
