Nobody is laughing at Donald Trump anymore

When I think of the difference between Donald Trump’s first term and Donald Trump’s second term, the image that stands out most is the president bombing.

It was this January’s keynote speech at the Alfalfa Club dinner, a hokey Washington institution that exists solely for the president to pop in once a year and fire off a bunch of jokes prepared by his speechwriters.

Trump broke with precedent and skipped it in his first term, but decided to give it a shot this time. On the surface, it might have seemed a subtle return to some kind of presidential normalcy — like his much-publicized first appearance at the better-known White House Correspondents’ Association’s dinner on Saturday, a media gathering that traditionally also features a presidential standup set.

Live: Trump 'unlikely' to extend ceasefire deadline as Iranian negotiator says nation won't accept peace talks

US President Donald Trump says he is unlikely to extend a ceasefire, set to expire on Wednesday night, US time.

A US negotiating team is due to head to Pakistan for talks with Iran "soon", despite Tehran refusing to commit to sitting down for negotiations.

If you're just joining us, here are the latest developments from the Middle East:

Israel and Lebanon are set to meet for further negotiations later this week after a 10-day ceasefire with Hezbollah was signed on Friday.

But while talks of what comes next take place, experts say Israel's continued presence in south Lebanon is creating a "bleak" future.

Trump says US will not lift Hormuz blockade until deal made with Iran

The US will not lift its blockade on Iranian ports until a deal has been reached with Tehran, US President Donald Trump has said, amid continuing uncertainty over whether fresh talks to end the war will take place.

The blockade, which began a week ago, is "absolutely destroying Iran", Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, adding his country was winning the conflict "by a lot".

His comments come with the temporary US-Iran ceasefire set to end on Wednesday, but with no certainty over whether a second round of peace talks will go ahead in Pakistan.

There is tightened security in Pakistan's capital in anticipation of a meeting. But US Vice President JD Vance – set to lead the US delegation – has not yet left Washington, while Iran says it has not decided whether to attend.

President Trump’s Landmark Order Advances Breakthrough Mental Health Treatments — Delivering New Hope to Veterans

This weekend, President Donald J. Trump signed a groundbreaking Executive Order accelerating research and improving access to psychedelic drugs as promising treatments for serious mental illnesses. The order prioritizes breakthroughs that could offer new hope to millions of Americans — particularly our nation’s brave veterans, who continue to face disproportionately high rates of suicide and often don’t respond to conventional therapies.

Veterans’ organizations, medical professionals, patient advocates, and industry leaders welcomed the historic action:

Americans for Ibogaine CEO W. Bryan Hubbard: “This began with a small group who refused to accept the status quo and fought to bring ibogaine into the United States healthcare system, growing into a national movement that could not be ignored. We have always believed this was the moonshot of our time. People from every corner of this country came together and demanded better. Today, that movement has compelled action at the highest levels of the federal government. The era of federal prohibition of psychedelic medicine in America is coming to an end.”

Trump says he had 'no idea' Anthropic's Amodei met with White House about Mythos

The White House said its meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei was "productive and constructive" on Friday, the latest sign of a potential thaw in the standoff between the government and the leading artificial intelligence company.

But when President Donald Trump was asked about Amodei's visit on a runway in Phoenix, Ariz., he responded, "Who?" and then said he had "no idea."

Amodei met with Susie Wiles, the White House chief of staff, and other senior administration officials to talk about the company's powerful new Mythos model, which was announced earlier this month. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was one of the officials in attendance, according to a source familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the meeting was private.

White House and Anthropic Hold ‘Productive’ Meeting, Aiming for a Compromise

Friday’s meeting at the White House followed the introduction of Anthropic’s powerful new artificial intelligence model, Mythos, which U.S. officials believe could be critical for security.

Julian E. Barnes and Tyler Pager reported from Washington and Sheera Frenkel reported from San Francisco.

Anthropic’s chief executive met with White House officials on Friday for discussions that both sides described as “productive,” as the Trump administration works to forge a compromise that would bring the artificial intelligence company’s technology back into the government, according to U.S. officials and others briefed on the matter.

Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s chief executive, met with the White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and others at the White House, the people said.

CEO of blacklisted Anthropic is going to the White House

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei visited the White House on Friday for a high-stakes meeting with the president’s top adviser, while his AI company battles the Trump administration in court for blacklisting its Claude AI model.

Amodei met with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, two sources familiar with the meeting told CNN. Axios first reported on the meeting.

The meeting took place as the US government is trying to balance its hardline approach to Anthropic with the national security implications of turning its back on the company’s breakthrough technology – including its Mythos tool that can identify cybersecurity threats but also present a roadmap for hackers to attack companies or the government.

With the war in the Middle East continuing to impact global travel and diplomacy, the conflict is also casting uncertainty over the upcoming FIFA World Cup being held in the US, Canada and Mexico.

After talks between the United States and Iran failed to result in a peace deal, the conflict shows little sign of ending. Iran is now looking increasingly unlikely to take part in the tournament, which kicks off in less than two months.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said Wednesday that Iran would "for sure" be at the World Cup this summer, despite the ongoing war with the United States.

The start of the conflict on Feb. 28 immediately cast doubt on Iran's ability and willingness to fulfill a World Cup entry secured in March 2025 as one of the best teams in Asia.

The World Cup is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico but with Iran set to play all three of its group-stage games in the U.S.

Donald Trump says he is "not happy with Australia" because Australia was "not there when we asked them to be there" in regards to the Strait of Hormuz.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers, who is visiting Washington, says he is not aware of any formal request from the US for Australian assistance in the strait.

Australia will join dozens of other countries for talks about the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, Paris time.

Donald Trump has again accused Australia of refusing to help the US in the Strait of Hormuz, but the Australian government maintains there has been no formal request for help from the US.

LIVE UPDATES: Trump renews criticism of Australia; Prime Minister visits fire-hit oil refinery; Reaction to Israel-Lebanon ceasefire announcement

Hello and welcome to our rolling coverage of the war in the Middle East on Friday, April 17.

US President Donald Trump has renewed his criticism of Australia, this time over the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier, the president announced Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire.

At home, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has visited the Viva oil refinery in Geelong a day after the facility was hit by fire. He says it will continue to produce diesel and jet fuel at 80 per cent capacity.

Albanese says he has spoken to the workers at the oil refinery near Geelong after a large fire at the facility, which supplies half of Victoria’s fuel and 10% of Australia’s.

He said the fire has temporarily affected the plant’s production capability and did not give a timeline on when it would be back to normal.

The blaze at the Viva Energy facility in Corio – one of two refineries left in the country – broke out just after 11pm Wednesday, with Fire Rescue Victoria alerted to the blaze by multiple calls to triple zero reporting explosions and flames.

Trump threatens to fire Fed chair Powell if he doesn't leave in May

US President Donald Trump has threatened to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell if he does not step aside at the end of his term in May.

The two have been embroiled in a bitter spat over Powell's reluctance to cut the central bank's interest rate, despite Trump's repeated calls.

Powell's term expires on 15 May, but he is planning to remain in post until his successor, Kevin Warsh, is confirmed by the Senate.

"Then I'll have to fire him," Trump told Fox Business, when asked about Powell's plans to stay on in the job.

"I've held back firing him. I've wanted to fire him, but I hate to be controversial," Trump said.

Trump judges give Trump officials a “Hail Mary pass” to avoid contempt inquiry

A dissenting Biden-appointed judge critiqued the majority for “cutting factfinding at the knees” and more.

Facing a criminal contempt probe, President Donald Trump’s administration has been seeking legal shelter. Trump-appointed appellate judges have been providing it.

The latest example came Tuesday, when a divided three-judge panel granted what it admitted was the government’s “extraordinary” request for relief, to terminate contempt proceedings stemming from last year’s deportation flights to a Salvadoran terror prison.

According to D.C. Circuit Judge Neomi Rao’s majority opinion, it’s not Trump officials who might be faulted for possibly ignoring U.S. District Judge James Boasberg’s orders in their quest to hurry migrants to El Salvador under the president’s legally dubious invocation of the 18th-century Alien Enemies Act. Rather, per Rao and fellow Trump appointee Justin Walker, it’s Boasberg’s attempt to understand what happened that risks upending the constitutional order.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge must end his “intrusive” contempt investigation of the Trump administration for failing to comply with an order over flights carrying Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador last year, a divided appeals court panel ruled Tuesday.

Chief Judge James Boasberg abused his discretion in forging ahead with criminal contempt proceedings stemming from the March 2025 deportation flights, according to the majority opinion by a three-judge panel from U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Trump announces Strait of Hormuz blockade after US-Iran peace talks end

US Navy to enforce blockade, Trump says after condemning Iran for blocking waterway and complaining no agreement reached in Islamabad.

President Donald Trump says the United States Navy will begin blockading the Strait of Hormuz “immediately” after peace talks between the US and Iran in Pakistan ended without an agreement.

Trump, in a social media post on Sunday, accused Iran of “extortion” and said the US Navy would hunt down and interdict ships in international waters that have paid Iran a toll to traverse the strait.

“So, there you have it, the meeting went well, most points were agreed to, but the only point that really mattered, NUCLEAR, was not,” Trump said. “Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.”

US President Donald Trump says he has ordered the country's navy to begin a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

He said he had also instructed the navy to intercept ships in international water that had paid Iran a toll to travel the strait.

It comes after the US and Iran failed to reach a peace agreement during talks in Pakistan.

United States President Donald Trump says the US Navy will commence a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, after "Iran promised to open the Strait of Hormuz" and "knowingly failed to do so".

The ABC's chief business correspondent Ian Verrender has today looked into how the world's ongoing fuel distribution crisis is tracking, almost six weeks into the war in the Middle East.
