Trump steps up demand to annex Greenland but rules out using force

US president tells business and political leaders in Davos his country needs ownership to defend ‘unsecured island’

Donald Trump has stepped up his demand to annex Greenland in an extraordinary speech in Davos, but said the US would not use force to seize what he called the “big, beautiful piece of ice”.

Addressing thousands of business and political leaders at the World Economic Form in the Swiss ski resort, the US president said he was “seeking immediate negotiations to once again discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States”.

“I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force. All the US is asking for is a place called Greenland,” he said. “You can say yes, and we will be very appreciative. Or you can say no and we will remember.”

Donald Trump says he wants "immediate" negotiations on the United States acquiring Greenland, but has ruled out using force to take the Danish territory.

The US president used an address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday, local time, to talk up his country's economy and reiterate his desire to have complete control over the Arctic island.

Global shares have fallen for a fourth day and some measures ‍of market stress remain high after a rout in global bonds and US threats to acquire Greenland kept investors on edge ahead of President Donald Trump's Davos speech.

Fears of foreign selling of US assets – the so-called "Sell America" trade that emerged after 2025's "Liberation Day" tariff announcements in April – gripped markets as Wall Street tumbled more than two per cent overnight and the US dollar suffered its biggest fall in over a month.

Trump is going to Davos — here are the big names who aren't

J.P. Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang are among the who's who of political leaders, big-name CEOs and tech pioneers heading to Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum's annual meeting.

U.S. President Donald Trump is also attending in person for the first time since he addressed the forum during his first term in 2020. His virtual address last year, days after reentering the White House, shook the event. This time, he will bring the "largest" U.S. delegation yet, according to WEF.

Davos organizers are keen to talk up the numbers they expect to attend — "close to 3,000 cross-sector leaders," plus a "record" 400 political leaders, 850 top company bosses and 100 tech pioneers. But a government at the center of a geopolitical firestorm won't be there.

    How Davos went MAGA

U.S. President Donald Trump’s star turn signals a new era for the World Economic Forum.

DAVOS, Switzerland — When U.S. President Donald Trump arrives in the snowy Alpine village of Davos this week, it will mark both the culmination of a yearlong courtship — and a turning point for a forum once synonymous with liberal globalism.

This year's World Economic Forum, which starts Monday, underscores a sharp shift for an event long caricatured as a “woke” talking shop: Climate and diversity have slipped down the agenda, AI and growth are ascendant, and the United States — led by Trump and his inner circle — is set to dominate the stage. That shift coincided with a monthslong campaign to land the U.S. president and reassert Davos’ relevance after years of drift.

London: Europe faces a spiralling dispute with Donald Trump over his demand for Greenland after the US President warned that he no longer felt obliged to pursue peace because he did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

In a leaked letter that stunned observers, Trump told Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that the peace prize decision was a factor in his thinking about gaining control of the Arctic territory.

The message heightens fears about Trump authorising drastic action to pursue his claim to Greenland despite moves from European leaders to oppose his demand and discuss a possible trade retaliation against the US at a meeting in Brussels on Thursday.

Trump ties Greenland demands to Nobel Prize in message to Norway leader

US President Donald Trump has said he no longer feels obliged to think only of peace after he did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize, as he again repeated his demand for control of Greenland.

In a message to Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Trump blamed the country for not giving him the prize.

In his reply to Trump, Støre explained that an independent committee, not the government of Norway, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October to Venezuela's opposition leader María Corina Machado.

CBS News, the BBC's US partner, confirmed the message and its contents.

Fox News chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst reports on growing unrest in Iran as anti-government protests enter their third week on ‘Fox Report.’

President Donald Trump said Sunday that Iran is "starting to" cross U.S. red lines, citing reports of civilian deaths and warning that any attack on American interests would be met with overwhelming force as his administration weighs what he called "very strong options."

Trump is pledging to ‘rescue’ protesters in Iran. He has a selective view of the sanctity of protests.

President Donald Trump billed strikes on Venezuela earlier this month as being about drugs, gangs invading the United States and law enforcement – i.e. arresting indicted leader Nicolás Maduro. But of late, he seems conspicuously preoccupied with the country’s oil wealth.

And the American people seem to have noticed. A CBS News poll last week showed many Americans thought the administration’s goals in Venezuela were about oil (59% saying the goals were “a lot” about access to oil) or about expanding US power (51%) – more so than drugs (38%), an invasion of gangs and terrorists (37%) or enforcing the law (31%).

That’s pretty stunning. It took years for the idea to take hold that George W. Bush’s administration invaded Iraq under false pretenses (about weapons of mass destruction); Americans are already largely there when it comes to Venezuela.

Trump calls for a 10% cap on credit card rates in his latest appeal to affordability concerns

President Donald Trump on Friday called for a one-year, 10% cap on credit card interest rates, saying the American public is being “ripped off” in a Truth Social post.

Trump called for the cap to come into effect on January 20, the one-year anniversary of his return to the White House. But he did not specify how a cap might happen, including whether he was calling for voluntary participation from credit card companies or looking for government mechanisms to enforce his proposal.

In his post, Trump cited “AFFORDABILITY!” as a rationale for the temporary cap, which he also proposed on the campaign trail in September 2024.

Trump announces one-year 10% cap on credit card interest rates

Critics express doubt president can implement such a move without approval from Congress

Donald Trump announced a one-year cap that would limit credit card interest rates to 10% this week, in a move that has prompted mixed reaction from lawmakers and beyond.

The president’s social media post on Friday night said the restriction would take effect on 20 January, but he did not provide specifics on how the government would implement it or ensure that companies comply.

“Please be informed that we will no longer let the American Public be ‘ripped off’ by Credit Card Companies that are charging Interest Rates of 20 to 30%, and even more, which festered unimpeded during the Sleepy Joe Biden Administration,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

Trump rings in 2026 at Mar-a-Lago with $2.75m auction of Jesus painting

President auctioned off portrait painted live onstage and said his new year’s resolution was ‘peace on Earth’

Donald Trump welcomed 2026 with a glitzy bash at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach where he auctioned off a freshly painted portrait of Jesus Christ for $2.75m and said his new year’s resolution was a wish for “peace on Earth”.

The portrait of Jesus had been painted on stage by artist Vanessa Horabuena, who, the president said, was “one of the greatest artists anywhere in the world”.

“To me, she’s one of the greatest. In fact, she did something last night that was incredible. She can paint, slowly, a beautiful portrait for the White House, or she can paint the most incredible painting in literally 10 minutes,” he added on video of the event broadcast on the conservative channel Newsmax.

Sweet Jesus—Trump auctions off a Christ painting made in ten minutes

Vanessa Horabuena created the Christ painting live on stage at Mar-a-Lago pic: Instagram

Donald Trump made waves (of course) on New Year’s Eve when he auctioned off a freshly painted portrait of Jesus Christ for $2.75m. The US President hosted a gala ringing in the new year at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, featuring a charity auction attended by luminaries such as the former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a bid to raise cash for a local children’s hospital, Trump asked the artist Vanessa Horabuena to paint a picture live in front of the assembled revellers. Horabuena tackled the large black canvas with a paintbrush as a band launched into a slow rendition of Hallelujah, reports The Guardian. “Draw something really special. I don’t know what it is, but draw something really special,” he said (the result was the rather makeshift Christ which sold to an unnamed couple).

Trump Sells Off Jesus Painting for $2.75M at NYE Party

The fair-skinned, light-eyed figure resembling an AI rendition of the Shroud of Turin was live-painted by a Christian artist in 10 minutes.

Some of us mark the New Year with a kiss or by swallowing 12 grapes for good luck, and others begin anew with the $2.75 million sale of a live-painted likeness of Jesus Christ.

During a New Year’s Eve party at Mar-a-Lago attended by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other right-wing figures, President Donald Trump auctioned a blue-eyed Christ likeness created in 10 minutes on stage. In a well-lit performance, Christian worship painter Vanessa Horabuena began the portrait with a bright-yellow cross and ambidextrous brush strokes as a cover of “Hallelujah” and other religious music played in the background.

Trump just declared Christmas Eve a national holiday. Here’s what's open and closed on Dec. 24

President Donald Trump delivered an early gift to the federal workforce, signing an executive order that effectively grants a five-day weekend to hundreds of thousands of government employees. The order, signed last Thursday, designates both Wednesday, Dec. 24, and Friday, Dec. 26, as federal holidays for 2025.

While the move is a boon for morale within the executive branch—closing nonessential agencies from Christmas Eve through the following Sunday—it creates a complex patchwork of operating hours for the private sector and quasi-governmental services.

“All executive departments and agencies of the federal government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2025, and Friday, Dec. 26, 2025,” the executive order says, although it includes a crucial caveat allowing agency heads to keep offices open for “reasons of national security, defense, or other public need.”

What's open and closed on Christmas Eve 2025? Here's what to know

Christmas is this week, and whether you are looking to do some last-minute shopping or grab a quick bite to eat, consumers will have plenty of options on Christmas Eve.

Most grocery stores, restaurants, and national retailers will be open on Wednesday, Dec. 24, albeit mostly under adjusted hours. Banks, post offices, shipping services, and the stock market will also be open on Christmas Eve, although those will also mostly operate under adjusted hours.

Here's everything you need to know about what's open and closed on Wednesday, Dec. 24. It's best to check with your local store or restaurant online before leaving home, as hours and closures can vary by location.

Trump declared new federal holidays. He once said US has 'too many'

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Dec. 18, giving some extra time off to federal workers around the upcoming holidays.

Trump declared Christmas Eve and Dec. 26 as federal holidays, extending the existing federal holiday on Christmas Day into an extra-long weekend.

While many private businesses observe federal holidays with paid time off for employees, they are not required to do so. That means Trump's newly declared upcoming holidays are only applicable to departments and agencies within the federal government.

Here is what to know about Trump's most recent holiday order:

Some employees may still have to report to work, at the discretion of agency leaders, according to Trump's order. Private businesses can decide to give their employees time off, but they are not obligated to by law.

President Trump signs order declaring Christmas Eve, Dec. 26 federal holidays

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday declaring Dec. 24 and Dec. 26 as federal holidays.

The order states that the heads of executive departments and agencies may determine that certain offices and installations of their organizations, or parts thereof, must remain open and that certain employees must report for duty on December 24, 2025, or December 26, 2025, or both, for reasons of national security, defense, or other public need.
