‘The no bulls**t truth’: How Dogs weapon turned death trap as real problem exposed

The game was gone, and for a lot of the Belmore faithful, the season felt like it was hanging by a thread.

When Cameron Ciraldo and Stephen Crichton fronted the cameras last night, it was a tough watch. Ciraldo sat there, stony-faced, trying to find the words to explain a 44-12 scoreline. He knew the Bulldogs would be the hot media topic for at least another week, the punching bag for every podcast in town.

He didn’t shy away from the pain, but he chose his words carefully. He pointed the finger at the “soft decisions” on the edges and spoke about a lack of “trust” once the Dolphins started shifting the footy. But then, he paused, and went into bat for his forward pack. He looked down the barrel and said his forwards were “trying their guts out,” almost as if he hoped that effort alone was enough to mask the reality of the scoreboard and give the fans something — anything — positive to cling to.

The real reason the Bulldogs are losing

Twelve months ago, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs were one of the best teams in the competition.

They were disciplined, relentless and capable of turning games into ugly, gritty contests that suited them perfectly.

Every player knew their role, and under Cameron Ciraldo, the club looked like it had finally found a clear identity.

Following Canterbury's 44-12 loss to the Dolphins, Ciraldo made it clear in his post-match press conference that he believed officiating had played a big role in the result.

“There are things that we can control on that, but I watch the game, and I don't see us being that much more ill-disciplined than the opposition,” Ciraldo said.
