The three WA winners were part of a group of 10 national winners who each scooped the incredible division one prize of $649,601.50 each.

The win comes just days after a Perth woman won an impressive $125,000 scratchie prize during a hair appointment in the city’s northern suburbs.

Russia Says Its Two-Seat Su-57 Will Fly Combat AI

On 14 August 2026 the Russian state news agency TASS reported that the two-seat Su-57D will be used to test combat artificial intelligence under development at the Sukhoi Design Bureau. The source was Mikhail Strelets, the bureau’s director, speaking on the Zvezda television programme Military Acceptance.

That sentence deserves to be read carefully, because it contains a claim, a claimant, and a broadcaster, and all three belong to the same state.

What is genuinely verifiable is narrower, and still interesting: Russia has built a two-seat stealth fighter, flown it, and says its second cockpit exists to command drones.

Everything else attributed to Strelets in the coverage — the combat AI, the swarms, the Okhotnik — was reported by TASS in paraphrase, not in quotation marks. No architecture, no autonomy level, no timeline and no decision authority has been disclosed. Army Recognition, which covered the story at length, was blunt that this should be viewed as a development objective rather than a demonstrated capability.

Russia's Su-57 Is Supposed To Challenge Western 5th-Gen Fighters — So Why Is Its Fleet So Small?

One of the best predictors of a successful fighter jet program is how many units are produced. This is especially true for aircraft that are exported to other countries that select them objectively (as opposed to Soviet-style military aid). There are exceptions, perhaps the most obvious being the US Air Force's F-22 Raptor. The circumstances of that aircraft are different, as it was built for the Cold War, it entered service during GWOT when the need for the fighter had largely disappeared. Congress also banned its export.

None of this is true for the Russian Sukhoi Su-57. The fighter was initially developed as a joint Russo-Indian program and was explicitly designed for export. It also entered service at a time of worsening geopolitical security, as Cold War legacy fighter jets are being retired and replaced around the world. It is only a mild exaggeration (explained below) to say no one has wanted to buy it, not even Russia. While the failure to export the Su-57 could be interpreted as a greater vote of no confidence in Russia than the aircraft itself, it's an insufficient explanation in light of Russia's own modest order.

Why This Small European Country Has Twice As Many 5th-Gen Fighters As Russia

The world's fifth-generation fighter jets are generally considered to be the F-22 Raptor, the F-35 Lightning II, the Shenyang J-35, the Chengdu J-20, and the Sukhoi Su-57. There is debate about whether the Su-57 should be considered a true fifth-generation fighter jet or a 4.5th-generation fighter with some low-observable characteristics. But for the purposes of this article, it will be included as a fifth-generation fighter.

The fighter jet entered Russian service in 2020 while Norway received its first F-35As in 2017. Today, Norway may have around double the number of fifth-generation fighters in service compared with Russia. In fact, Russia may or may not even be in the top ten countries by number of fifth-generation fighter jets in service as of mid-2026, as it's unclear if it has more or less than Denmark.

Two Swans who weren’t in the room paying ‘unfathomable’ price

Sydney’s looming finals campaign is in tatters in the wake of the late-night partying that resulted in the suspension of five players for the remainder of the season in Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, Riley Bice and James Jordon.

And of their teammates, none will likely be angrier or more frustrated with them than Dane Rampe and Jake Lloyd.

Rampe, 36, and Lloyd, about to turn 33, have spent their whole careers chasing an elusive premiership. Both have played in four losing grand finals for the Swans: 2014, 2016, 2022 and 2024.

Two new cities join the race to host the 2028 NRL grand final

Melbourne and Auckland are the latest cities to express an interest in hosting the 2028 grand final, sparking the biggest bidding war ever for the game’s showpiece event.

The 2028 decider is up for grabs at a time when a scheduling clash with Pope Leo XIV’s Sydney visit may prompt a change of date or venue. NSW Premier Chris Minns has indicated he wants the match to remain in Sydney, but will face stiff opposition from rival Australian states.

Melbourne is the latest to publicly state its intentions, joining Sydney, Perth and Brisbane in jockeying for the hosting rights. There is also the prospect of the match going offshore for the first time after New Zealand expressed an interest in pinching the game.

Key Auckland figures are open to the prospect of the city hosting the NRL grand final, although no formal discussions have taken place.

The NRL’s showpiece match could be forced out of Sydney in 2028 because of a scheduling clash with Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the city.

    The grand
final has been played exclusively at Sydney’s Olympic stadium since 1999, with the exception of 2021, when Covid-19 restrictions in New South Wales forced the match to be relocated to Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.

The decider is traditionally played on the first Sunday of October, which coincides with the start of daylight saving, with Labour Day held the following day.

Catherine King, the federal transport minister, said she is “confident” that Airservices Australia is doing “everything that they can to get on top of this” after a near miss at Sydney airport on Sunday.

She said that included better rostering, saying there was unplanned leave due to illness in Sydney over the weekend.

Sydney Airport near miss 'could have been far more serious', ATSB boss says

Two airport workers have been stood down amid investigations into how two planes almost collided at Sydney Airport on Sunday.

It comes as the head Civil Air Association, the union representing air traffic controllers, said staffing shortages were taking a toll on those on the frontline.

Federal Transport Catherine King met with Airservices Australia CEO Rob Sharp and said the organisation had committed to implementing improved rostering practices for Sydney's air traffic controllers.

Pilots who avoided a second near miss at Sydney Airport in a fortnight "prevented what could have been far more serious", the head of the nation's air safety bureau says.

One second from disaster: Air traffic control boss forced to explain Sydney airport chaos

Two airport workers have been stood down and the chief of Australia’s air traffic control agency summoned for a meeting with the federal transport minister as investigators probe the second near-collision between two planes at Sydney Airport in the past two weeks.

Both the air traffic controller and the ground crew worker involved in the Sunday incident have been stood down under their employers’ policies while authorities determine how a Jetstar plane got within metres of striking a Qatar jet.

The airport has suffered days of delays triggered by Airservices Australia, a government owned corporation that operates air traffic control towers around the country and has faced workforce shortages.

Liverpool vs. Monaco: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Andoni Iraola oversees his first home match as Liverpool manager when Monaco visit Anfield for a preseason friendly on Sunday.

The Reds have already played three games under their new coach, tasting victory against Sunderland and Wrexham prior to a bruising 4–2 loss to Leeds United in the final outing of their preseason tour of the United States. Despite being two goals ahead at halftime, a calamitous second half display resulted in a first defeat for Iraola.

Now back on home soil, Liverpool will be eager to issue a firm response to last weekend’s disappointment, and Iraola will want his players to showcase plenty of intensity and attacking endeavor to swiftly win over the Anfield faithful.

The building was part of a construction site, Fire and Rescue NSW has confirmed.

“A portion of that building has collapsed, and some of the debris has come down and fallen on some cars parked within the service station area,” Fire and Rescue NSW Acting Superintendent Peter Murray said.

Seven patients were assessed at the scene by paramedics, two of whom – one man in his 60s and another in his 30s – were taken to hospital in a serious condition, Ambulance NSW told nine.com.au.

A two-year stamp duty holiday would fix the housing crisis

Readers’ letters on Australia’s housing crisis, tax reform, mining, Liberal Party climate policy and the CFMEU royal commission.

I had some thoughts about your article “Stamp duty rates are wrong, analysts say. Downsizers agree”, which highlights one of the biggest inefficiencies in Australia’s housing market.

Older Australians are reluctant to shift into smaller places because of hefty government levies. A temporary pause could rapidly improve supply. David Rowe

Our sales network regularly speaks to empty-nesters who would happily move to smaller homes but can’t justify paying substantial stamp duty.

This is far from a new issue. The Financial Review highlighted it almost a decade ago in “Angus Raine calls for stamp duty break to encourage empty-nesters to downsize”. Then, I argued that stamp duty relief for downsizers aged over 70 would encourage housing turnover and improve affordability. Nearly a decade later, the case is even stronger.

Stamp duty rates are wrong, analysts say. Downsizers agree

Sydney eastern suburbs retiree Michael Grant and his wife live in a five-bedroom house worth about $3 million. They would downsize their living but for one big problem: a $150,000 stamp duty bill.

“Assuming that we stay in a similar area, even if we move to a two or three-bedroom apartment, it’s going to cost a similar amount to what we will get for our house,” said the recently retired software worker.

    Should we bribe the NIMBYs?

Everyone hates luxury development. But we need fancy new apartment buildings to fix the housing crisis: When rich people can move into new units, then non-rich people can move into the older homes that the rich move out of.1

Despite the truth of this, voters just do not believe that more building alone will make housing more affordable. And many politicians want the least fortunate Americans to see more obvious benefits from homebuilding.

One solution is to force developers of fancy new apartment buildings to set aside some of those homes for low- or moderate-income people. This policy is called inclusionary zoning.
