Massive ‘Tycho’ Space Station 10X Larger Than the ISS Wins Inaugural Aurelia Prize

The Aurelia Institute has selected designer Will Root and his orbital Tycho space station, which boasts 10 times more interior space than the International Space Station, as the winners of their inaugural Aurelia Prize in Design for Space Urbanism. The organization also announced the four Honorable Mentions in the $20,000 global design competition, which included several alternative off-world space-habitat concepts.

Along with the $20,000 USD first prize, Root is invited to take part in a parabolic research flight as part of Aurelia Institute’s Horizon Zero Gravity Program. The inaugural award winner will also have his designs added to the organization’s Space Architecture Trade Study, which they describe as a “public resource to gather innovative approaches to space habitat design for academics, industry professionals, and the broader space architecture community.”

Russia Admits It’s No Longer a Space Power as Launches Fall to 1960s Levels

Russia has effectively fallen out of the ranks of global space leaders, with its launch rates hitting a historic low not seen since the dawn of human spaceflight, The Moscow Times reported, citing Russian state media on April 10.

Speaking at the Russian Space Forum, Lev Zeleny, the scientific director of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Space Research Institute, admitted that Moscow has no plans for manned deep space or lunar missions over the next decade. The only major project remaining is the creation of a new Russian Orbital Station.

Russia's plans to stay afloat in the global space race

The cosmonautical sovereignty of the Kremlin clings to survive 65 years after the historic flight of Yuri Gagarin, which consecrated Russia as a pioneering country in space exploration

As the 65th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's spaceflight approaches –the Soviet military aviator who, on April 12, 1961, became the first human to orbit the Earth– the Kremlin's space sovereignty is going through what can be described as a period of survival, despite Russia still holding the status of the world's third space power.

Russian authorities and society see themselves as heirs to the achievements and milestones reached up to 1991 by the industry, engineers, and cosmonauts of the former Soviet Union. For this reason, President Vladimir Putin is making every effort to sustain Moscow's space power as far as possible, supported by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and with First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov acting as the key figure in the space sector.
