Typhoon Dolphin: China evacuates more than 1 million people as massive storm arrives

More than a million people have been evacuated from their homes in eastern China including Shanghai, as Typhoon Dolphin made landfall on Sunday evening.

It packed maximum wind speeds of 150km/h (94mph) when it first slammed into Yuhuan in the Zhejiang province at 17:30 (09:30 GMT) before making a second landfall in the city of Wenzhou about an hour later, meteorological authorities said.

The typhoon halted transportation across the region – 1,400 flights were cancelled in Shanghai alone.

Chinese authorities had earlier issued their highest-level red alert for Dolphin, but by Monday morning they downgraded it to a tropical storm.

The storm is moving inland within China, and authorities are still warning of torrential rains, severe flooding and the risk of landslides through to Wednesday.

Typhoon Dolphin has crossed over China's coastline near Yuhuan City in Zhejiang Province.

Thousands of flights have been cancelled and hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated.

Forecasters in China predicted that areas could see 200–400 millimetres of rainfall over the next few days.

Typhoon Dolphin made landfall in densely populated eastern China on Sunday, meteorological authorities said, after the storm triggered more than 1,000 flight cancellations, evacuations and a top-level alert.

China's east coast has been preparing for the storm's arrival in recent days, with work and transport services suspended in some areas along its predicted path.

Typhoon Dolphin makes landfall in China as its strongest storm this year

Tropical cyclone brings torrential rain and high winds to east coast after hitting Japan’s southern Okinawa province

Typhoon Dolphin, the most powerful tropical cyclone to hit China this year, has made landfall on the country’s east coast, bringing torrential rain and strong winds and triggering warnings of flooding and landslides.

The storm has already swept through Japan’s southern Okinawa prefecture, injuring six people and cutting power to more than 50,000 buildings.

Dolphin made landfall near Yuhuan in Zhejiang province at about 5:30pm (0930 GMT) on Sunday, China’s meteorological authorities said. It brought maximum sustained winds of 94mph (151 km/h) near its centre at landfall, equivalent to a category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Typhoon Bavi: China evacuates nearly two million people as powerful typhoon makes landfall

A powerful typhoon has made landfall in China, the second to hit the country in a week, with nearly two million people evacuated from areas in the path of the storm.

Typhoon Bavi, which spans 1,000km (620 miles) at its widest point – roughly the width of France – first came ashore in the coastal city of Taizhou on Saturday evening before making a second landfall in Wenzhou around midnight (17:00 GMT).

After pummelling a chain of remote Japanese islands, it brought heavy rainfall to Taiwan as it brushed past its northern tip.

Earlier landslides triggered by the storm killed at least 17 people in the Philippines.
