Porto vs Stuttgart: UEFA Europa League stats & head-to-head

Porto have won each of their last four European games against German opposition (Bayer Leverkusen x2, Hoffenheim, Stuttgart), their joint-best run versus such teams (also 4, 1993-2000).

This will be Stuttgart’s third away trip to Portugal in major European competition, previously drawing 2-2 with Vitória Setúbal in the 1973-74 UEFA Cup and losing 2-1 at Benfica in the 2010-11 UEFA Europa League.

Porto have won each of their last four UEFA Europa League home games, last winning five in a row on home turf in major European competition in February 2003. They have also progressed from eight of their nine major European two-legged knockout ties when winning the first leg away from home.

Leweling a minor doubt for Porto rematch as Hoeneß senses "a real buzz" in camp

In his press conference this evening, Sebastian Hoeneß revealed that Jamie Leweling is a slight doubt for VfB Stuttgart's second-leg clash with FC Porto tomorrow evening.

“Jamie picked up a minor issue in from the Leipzig match, but he'll be in training today, but Josha Vagnoman has returned to the squad,” Hoeneß added.

Regarding the game, Hoeneß sensed “a real buzz” around the camp and added that the 2-1 aggregate advantage currency held by Porto is not too significant to overturn.

“It’s not business as usual. Reaching the round of 16 in the UEFA Europa League is something special. We can achieve something historic for the club, and now there’s a real buzz.

Nartey sees red as Porto eliminate Stuttgart from the Europa League

VfB Stuttgart's dreams of reaching a quarter final of the UEFA Europa League were brought crashing down to earth this evening. A 2-0 win in the second-leg for FC Porto ensured Francisco Farioli's side comfortably advance on a 4-1 aggregate scoreline.

Stuttgart showed signs of intent from the off when Angelo Stiller's cross found Jeff Chabot which forced a save from Diogo Costa inside two minutes. Chris Führich also tested the Porto captain, while Deniz Undav curled wide inside a dominant 15-minute spell.

However a similar misfortune would strike the Swabians yet again, conceding on 21 minutes for a second Thursday in succession. Borja Sainz skipped past the tackles, delivered a ball into the six-yard box where William Gomes was on hand to convert.

Arsenal boss Slegers: Rematch with Leuven 'different scenario'

Arsenal will get a sense of deja vu in Wednesday's Champions League play-off round first leg as they run out to face OH Leuven in Belgium.

This was the fixture with which Renee Slegers' side wrapped up their league phase campaign with a 3-0 win back in December, so it is little wonder they are strong favourites to advance in this two-legged tie and to the quarterfinals where Chelsea await.

Slegers, whose side come into the match on the back of their FIFA Champions Cup success and a win over WSL leaders Manchester City, is preaching humility to ensure there is no slip-up.

Arsenal were 4-0 winners in Leuven in the first leg of their round of 16 Champions League tie on Wednesday night. Chloe Kelly made her first start since a knee injury sustained in November and helped herself to an assist. She spoke in the mixed zone post-match, the question in italics is from Arseblog News.

On her thoughts on the game…
We are feeling very good and we are building momentum together as a team. A good display tonight, but we know it’s only half time. There’s gonna be another tough test next week. Amazing to see the stadium full and to play against a top Leuven side. We knew we had to be at our best tonight and to be clinical inside the box and we’re ruthless in both boxes, so I think we put on a good display today.

Villarreal vs Ajax: UEFA Champions League stats & head-to-head

Ajax have now won back-to-back matches, having lost their opening five Champions League games

Ajax scored a late winner as they came from behind to beat Villarreal and keep alive their hopes of reaching the Champions League play-offs.

The Dutch side lost their opening five matches in Europe this season but have now won back-to-back games to give themselves a chance of finishing inside the top 24.

Villarreal had looked on course to pick up their first win of this Champions League campaign when Tani Oluwaseyi's thumping volley opened the scoring four minutes after the break.

But Oscar Gloukh's free-kick on 61 minutes bypassed everyone and flew into the top corner before Anton Gaaei pulled back for Edvardsen to slot home in the 90th minute.

Ajax defy rain in Spain to book second Champions League win

Ajax kept their flickering hopes of progress in the Champions League alive with a dramatic late win in rain-soaked Villareal.

Oliver Edvardsen came off the bench to snatch an 89th-minute winner as he tucked away a through ball by Anton Gaaei. The Scandinavians duo been put up for sale by Ajax as the club looks to boost its coffers in the transfer window.

An entertaining first half ended goalless, partly thanks to Vitaslav Jaros’ heroics in the Ajax goal as he pulled off fine stops to deny Sergi Cardona and Nicolas Pepe.

The home side took the lead four minutes after the break, as Tani Oluwaseyi beat Aaron Bouwman to a long ball and hit a first-time shot over the flailing Jaros.

Last gasp goal keeps alive Ajax’s Champions League hopes

Edvardsen buried a cutback cross from flying fullback Anton Gaael in the 90th minute to see the Dutch giants, who had lost their first five group games, come from behind to win a second successive tie which means they still have a chance of finishing in the top 24 with a home game to come against Olympiacos of Greece next week.

Villarreal are eliminated, stuck second from bottom with a single point as poor form in Europe contrasts with their third place in LaLiga.

Tani Oluwaseyi had given the hosts a 49th-minute lead with a superb volley but Oscar Gloukh’s free kick saw Ajax equalise in the 61st minute before they snatched a much-needed three points.
