As Ukraine marks 35 years since independence from the Soviet Union, Volodymyr Zelenskyy is vowing the country will not surrender to Russian aggression.

Foreign leaders attended the ceremony, where UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham promised to maintain support for Kyiv despite Russian threats to Britain.

Ukraine is calling on allies to provide missile interceptors as Russia exploits a shortage to rain terror on cities and towns.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has used a defiant speech on Ukraine's Independence Day to declare that the country wants peace but will not just surrender to Russia at any price, as foreign leaders pledged their support.

Ukraine war briefing: EU sanctions oust Russian president of world chess

EU unveils largest package in four years of measures against Russian individuals and interests; Laura Loomer shows up in Kyiv. What we know on day 1,612

Arkady Dvorkovich, the president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), said on Friday he was suspending his activity with the organisation after being placed on the EU list of sanctioned Russians. Dvorkovich, a former Russian deputy prime minister, complained that the designation was “unlawful and unfair”. A statement said Viswanathan Anand, an Indian world chess champion, would take over as the federation’s interim president.

It came as the EU has unveiled its largest sanctions package in four years against Russia, targeting 218 individuals and entities. The EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said the measures hit more than 100 banks and cryptocurrency operators, more than 40 ‌vessels from Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, as well as several oil refineries. The package adds more than 50 military-industrial entities to the sanctions list, including key actors ‌involved in producing Russia’s long-range drones. The Russian oil price cap is frozen at $44.10 per barrel for 12 months, preventing an automatic increase that would have raised it to about $58.50.

The EU has imposed sanctions on the head of the Russian Olympic Committee and the president of FIDE

The European Union has imposed sanctions against Russia’s Minister of Sports and Chairman of the Russian Olympic Committee, Mikhail Degtyarev, as well as the President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Arkady Dvorkovich.

This was announced by Ukraine’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Matviy Bidny. According to him, Degtyarev openly supports Russia’s war against Ukraine, while Dvorkovich, as head of FIDE, promotes the Kremlin’s interests and contributes to the legitimization of Russia in international sports.

“Their inclusion on the EU sanctions list confirms that there is no place in the civilized world for Kremlin officials and their lobbyists,” Bidnyi noted.

Statement by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich – International Chess Federation

Today, the EU decision to include my name in the 21st sanctions list was published. I want to state unequivocally that I consider this decision unlawful and unfair, and this decision will be immediately challenged by all possible means. I am confident that justice will prevail.

However, given that until a formal court decision is rendered and/or such decision is cancelled or amended, these sanctions could hinder the stable functioning of FIDE, I have decided to voluntarily suspend the exercise of my powers and duties as FIDE President with immediate effect and for as long as I remain subject to sanctions under the EU and Swiss laws and regulations. In accordance with the FIDE Charter, the duties of the President will be assumed by the FIDE Deputy President, the 15th World Champion, Viswanathan Anand.

‘Coalition of the willing’ to build shared European anti-ballistic programme

Ukraine and nine other countries including UK issue joint statement as leaders meet Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris

Ukraine and nine other countries including the UK, Germany and France are to build a shared protection programme for Europe against ballistic missiles, using Kyiv’s experience in fighting Russia’s full-scale invasion for more than four years.

“Our goal is to build a shared ballistic missile defence capability for Europe,” the 10 nations said in a statement on Monday as leaders met the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for talks in Paris.

The announcement came as the UK also signed up to participate in the EU’s €90bn (£77bn) support loan for Ukraine, meaning UK firms will be able to provide more weapons paid for by the funds. The move is the latest push by the EU and Britain to work more closely after Britain quit the bloc in 2020 as a result of the Brexit vote.

Ukraine hits major oil terminal in Russia's St Petersburg

A major oil terminal in Russia's north-western city of St Petersburg was struck overnight by Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

The Ukrainian president described it as key "infrastructure that generates revenue for Russia's war". Ukraine also said a major Russian naval base in the region was hit.

St Petersburg Governor Aleksandr Beglov said the city had been under a "massive" drone attack, admitting the oil terminal was hit but saying there had been no casualties.

Ukraine has recently intensified its long-range drone attacks on Russia's critical energy infrastructure, causing widespread fuel shortages. Kyiv says nearly 43% of Russia's oil refining capacity has been "disabled" as a result.

No safe harbour: Ukrainian drones strike Russian warship in the Baltic for the first time

This week, Ukrainian one-way attack drones struck the Russian corvette RFS Boiky in Kronstadt naval base, more than 1,100 km from the Ukrainian border. The attack signals another extension of Ukraine’s long-range strike campaign and carries implications well beyond the conflict itself.

At 06:35 local time on 3 June 2026, drones operated by the 1st Separate Centre of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces struck the corvette Boiky in the Veleshchynsky dry dock at Kronstadt. The historic naval base is situated on Kotlin Island, roughly 20 km west of Saint Petersburg at the eastern end of the Gulf of Finland. The attack formed part of a wider set of strikes in the region that morning.

Large-scale Ukrainian drone attack kills three in Moscow region, says Russia

At least three people were killed and several injured overnight in a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region, Russian officials have said.

A woman died in Khimki, north of Moscow, and a person was trapped under rubble, regional governor Andrei Vorobiev said. A man and a woman were killed in the village of Pogorelki.

A male Indian citizen was killed and three others injured, India's Moscow embassy said, but it was not clear whether these casualties were included in Vorobiev's tally. Another person died in Belgorod region bordering Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strikes were an "entirely justified" response to deadly Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Trump says Russia and Ukraine to observe three-day ceasefire

Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, after both countries accused each other of violating separate ceasefires declared by each side to cover the celebrations of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany.

"This ceasefire will include a suspension of all kinetic activity, and also a prison swap of 1,000 prisoners from each country," the US president said.

Shortly afterwards Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Ukraine's participation, while Russian state media also said Russia had agreed to the proposal.

Earlier both sides said the other had continued to attack their positions and Moscow's mayor said the city had been targeted by drones overnight.

Russia, Ukraine agree to three-day ceasefire, says Trump

US President Donald Trump said there will be a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine over the weekend, as well as a prisoner swap.

The ceasefire, which Trump said would run from May 9 to May 11, coincides with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, the US president said in a social media post on Friday.

Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have both agreed to the proposal.

“This Ceasefire will include a suspension of all kinetic activity, and also a prison swap of 1,000 prisoners from each Country,” Trump wrote. “Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War,” he wrote on Truth Social.

Ukraine has launched its second-biggest drone assault on Russia since war broke out in February 2022.

Air defences downed 347 Ukrainian drones across 20 Russian regions overnight, with further drone attacks also disrupting flights in Moscow.

The Kremlin has ordered mobile internet access in Moscow to be switched off for Victory Day commemorations on Saturday.

Ukraine has launched a major drone attack on numerous Russian regions as tensions mount between the two countries over ceasefire plans for Russia's upcoming Victory Day celebrations.

The assault came after Moscow disregarded Kyiv's proposal of a ceasefire that was meant to begin on Tuesday, local time, and launched a fresh round of attacks.

Incoming drones were destroyed over 20 Russian regions, including Moscow, according to the defence ministry, in Ukraine's second-biggest aerial attack since Russia's all-out invasion more than four years ago.

Ukrainian drone hits upmarket Moscow high-rise ahead of Victory Day celebrations

A Ukrainian drone hit an upmarket residential high-rise in Moscow in the early hours of Monday, causing visible damage to the façade of the building but no casualties.

An unverified video circulating on social media showed firemen entering a heavily damaged flat covered in dust and rubble, with blown-out windows. Another showed drone debris strewn across the street below.

Two other drones were intercepted, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. Vnukovo and Domodedovo international airports suspended operations overnight.
