Peace talks on Russia-Ukraine war end as fighting rages

The first three-way peace talks between Russia, Ukraine and the US have ended in Abu Dhabi with no apparent breakthrough, as fighting rages.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky raised the possibility of a second meeting as early as next week, while an American official said a new round would begin on 1 February.

The two-day talks ended after waves of Russian air strikes targeted Ukraine's badly damaged energy infrastructure, killing one person and injuring 35 others, Ukrainian officials said.

Russia accused Ukraine of attacking an ambulance in Ukrainian territory under its control, killing three medics. Later, it reported a Ukrainian missile attack on energy infrastructure in Belgorod.

Ukraine war briefing: Kyiv and Moscow set to hold more face-to-face talks as US hails ‘big step’ forward

First round of trilateral meetings shows ‘a lot of progress’ made towards peace, says US official, despite new Russian attacks. What we know on day 1,432

Ukraine and Russia have agreed to hold a second round of US-brokered direct peace talks next weekend after a two-day meeting in Abu Dhabi, despite Ukrainian complaints that negotiations were undermined by a barrage of deadly strikes. The trilateral talks in the UAE would resume on 1 February, a US official said on Saturday, adding: “I think getting everyone together was a big step. I think it’s a confirmation of the fact that, number one, a lot of progress has been made to date in really defining the details needed to get to a conclusion.” The talks were the first known direct contact between Ukrainian and Russian officials on a plan being pushed by Donald Trump to end the nearly four-year war. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said “a lot was discussed, and it is important that the conversations were constructive”.

Ukrainian, Russian and US officials are meeting in Abu Dhabi to try and end the war in Ukraine.

Territory will be a key issue discussed but neither Kyiv or Russia has indicated a willingness to change positions to secure peace.

Emirati Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed announced the meeting had commenced about 7:30pm local time and in a statement said it would continue on Saturday.

The first known meeting between Ukrainian, Russian and US officials will tackle the vital issue of territory during two days of talks in Abu Dhabi, but neither Kyiv or Moscow has indicated a change in their positions to end the four-year war.

Ukraine war briefing: Zelenskyy says Kyiv cannot win without US support as Putin orders advance in Zaporizhzhia

Ukrainian president calls latest talks with Trump productive; Zelenskyy says attack on Putin’s residence is ‘lies’. What we know on day 1,406

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukraine cannot win its war against Russia without US support and accused Moscow of trying to sabotage peace talks after the Kremlin said it had foiled a Ukrainian drone attack on Vladimir Putin’s residence. Zelenskyy described the claim as “typical Russian lies” after his two-hour meeting on Sunday with Donald Trump in Florida, Luke Harding and Sammy Gecsoyler report. The Ukrainian president said Russia was “at it again” and using “dangerous statements” to undermine “diplomatic efforts” with the US to end the conflict. He added: “This alleged ‘residence strike’ story is a complete fabrication intended to justify additional attacks against Ukraine, including Kyiv, as well as Russia’s own refusal to take necessary steps to end the war.”

'We can't just withdraw from our territories,' —Zelensky says following his meeting with Trump

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine cannot simply withdraw from its territories as part of any peace deal with Russia, emphasizing that the issue goes beyond legal constraints and affects people’s lives, during an interview with Fox News' Bret Baier aired on Dec. 29.

"We can't just withdraw, it's out of our law. We can't just withdraw from our territories. (But) it's not only the law," Zelensky said. "People live there, 300,000 people… We can't lose those people."

Zelensky's remarks follow a Dec. 28 meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence, which he described as productive.

"I’m thankful to President Trump, really, it was a very productive meeting and in Mar-a-Lago maybe another mood here," Zelensky said following what looked like one of the better face-to-face meetings between him and Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, their sixth in a year.

Moscow says Putin-Zelenskyy talks not expected

The Kremlin said no telephone conversation is planned between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that Putin’s recent call with Donald Trump did not include talks on a Christmas ceasefire in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state media on Tuesday that Russia does not currently foresee direct contact between President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He said Moscow had no clarity on Zelenskyy’s earlier remarks suggesting Russia should prepare a “Plan B” for the conflict.

Peskov noted that although Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone call on Monday, the possibility of a Christmas ceasefire was not raised. He said Russia is considering an end to the conflict only within the framework of its stated objectives, signalling no shift in Moscow’s position.
