    Cambridge academics reject university’s attempt to end row over Jason Arday

    Group calls for ‘thorough and transparent investigation’ of hiring of professor who resigned after his claims came under scrutiny

    The University of Cambridge has announced a review into the way it vets and hires senior academic staff in an effort to fend off external and internal criticism of its appointment of Jason Arday as a professor.

    But a group of Cambridge academics quickly rejected the university’s response, saying: “We strongly believe that a thorough and transparent investigation into the wider circumstances of this damaging episode is essential.”

    Arday resigned earlier this week after mounting scepticism over his personal and professional claims, three-and-a-half years after he was acclaimed as Cambridge’s youngest black professor with a life story of educational disadvantage, including being unable to speak until the age of 11.

    Met Police boss admits mistake over plagiarism row

    The head of the Metropolitan Police has said his force should not have investigated a journalist who was looking into plagiarism claims about a University of Cambridge professor.

    Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said officers "dropped the ball" when they looked into a complaint made against journalist Jack Grove over his attempts to contact Prof Jason Arday.

    Sir Mark told broadcaster LBC the complaint should have been "screened out earlier on as not requiring investigation".

    Arday, who resigned from Cambridge on Wednesday, has has admitted errors in his work, but denied plagiarism.

    Times Higher Education (THE) reporter Grove said he had been investigating allegations Arday had plagiarised parts of his PhD, and contacted him in 2025 to offer him the right of reply.

    Body of missing Auburn University student found in Japan

    The body of an Auburn University student who had been missing in Japan for a week has been found in a mountainous area outside of Kyoto, according to his family.

    James “Weston” Higginbotham, 20, was on a family trip when he vanished, prompting a massive search by police and local volunteers. He was last seen at the Kyoto train station on May 29.

    His mother, Nancy Higginbotham, shared the news on Saturday that his body had been found by a volunteer search and rescue group.

    “The grief we feel is impossible to put into words,” Higginbotham wrote in a statement posted to Facebook. “We are forever grateful for the time we had with our sweet, precious Weston, but cannot begin to understand what life without him will be like.”

    American missing in Japan found dead in mountainous area near Kyoto

    An Auburn University student missing in Japan since last week was found dead by volunteers searching a mountainous area near Kyoto, his mother said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

    James "Weston" Higginbotham, 20, was reported missing on May 29 while on a trip with his family, after he stopped responding to his family's messages on the phone and turned off his location, according to authorities.

    "The grief we feel is impossible to put into words," his mother, Nancy Higginbotham, said Saturday. 

    "We shared our story here and in the media in the hope of finding Weston," Nancy Higginbotham said. "We now ask for privacy as we begin to navigate this unimaginable loss."

    Getting into university in Sydney next year will be the toughest it’s ever been under a controversial new funding arrangement that critics say will severely limit places in the city, kneecap institutions and fail to increase access for poor students.

    The new regime, called managed growth funding, effectively caps the number of domestic students admitted to each university. This means some students will be pushed out of universities in Sydney, leaving them to either study elsewhere or abandon tertiary education.

    “Managed growth … hopes to divert enrolments to less popular universities. It puts system stability above student demand,” said higher-education expert Andrew Norton.

    One of Iran’s most powerful men – who has been leading Tehran’s peace negotiations with the US – has for more than a decade built extensive ties to Australia, including through rental income from at least one investment property that was collected by his son.

    As Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf plays a central role in the Middle East conflict and the peace negotiations, Guardian Australia can reveal Iran’s parliamentary speaker and his son have links to a research centre at the University of Melbourne. His 38-year-old son, Eshagh Ghalibaf, also secured long-term Australian residency despite Canada twice rejecting his visa applications.

    Ghalibaf family’s Australian links detailed in Guardian report

    Guardian Australia reported that Ghalibaf and his son had links to a research center at the University of Melbourne and that rental income from at least one Australian investment property was collected by his son, Eshagh Ghalibaf.

    The report also said Eshagh Ghalibaf secured long-term Australian residency despite Canada twice rejecting his visa applications over concerns related to the Iranian regime.

    The revelations are likely to raise questions about Australia’s handling of sanctions involving current and former IRGC-linked figures and their families.

    Ghalibaf, a former Revolutionary Guards air force commander and police chief, has never been sanctioned by Australia, unlike in Canada.

    Rachael “Raygun” Gunn has taken a swipe at the state of higher education in Australia after the Olympian’s redundancy from Macquarie University earlier this year became public.

    Gunn came to global prominence after the 2024 Games, where her kangaroo hops, contorting and Australia tracksuit failed to garner a single point from the judges as breaking made its Olympic debut.

    Gunn took a voluntary redundancy from the university’s Faculty of Arts in February, saying she had seen “the writing on the wall”.

    “We need to have a serious conversation about higher education in this country,” she told the Herald on Wednesday evening, saying she was concerned about the student experience, the psychosocial hazards facing staff and the spending on buildings, consultants and executive pay.

    Since 2019, Evans has been vice chancellor of Griffith University, a 44,000-student operation that sprawls over campuses dotted around Brisbane and south-east Queensland.

    The president of the Ohio State University has resigned following the disclosure of an “inappropriate relationship” to the college’s board of trustees.

    In a statement, Walter “Ted” Carter Jr, who had led the university since 2024, said that he “made a mistake in allowing inappropriate access to Ohio State leadership”.

    The board of trustees said that they had accepted Carter’s resignation, based on the fact that he “had an inappropriate relationship with someone seeking public resources to support her personal business”.

    Married Ohio State President “Ted” Carter Jr. resigned Monday from his $1.5 million-per-year job after fessing up to an “inappropriate relationship” with a woman who wanted Ohio State’s help with her business.

    Carter, 66, said in a statement he resigned voluntarily, after admitting to the university’s board of trustees he “made a mistake in allowing inappropriate access to Ohio State leadership.” 

    He did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding the relationship, but said he was leaving with his wife of nearly 45 years.

    “Lynda and I leave Ohio State with gratitude and appreciation for this wonderful community. It has been an honor to serve as this university’s 17th president, and we wish the university ongoing success,” wrote Carter, who led the nation’s sixth-largest university for just over two years.

    An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a student who was fatally stabbed near a university campus in Leicester.

    Officers were called to reports a man had collapsed in Oxford Street, close to the junction with Bonners Lane, just after 17:00 GMT on Tuesday.

    The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary but died a short time later, Leicestershire Police said.

    Prof Katie Normington, vice-chancellor of De Montfort University (DMU), said she was "devastated by the tragic death of one of our students".

    UK police say they have arrested an 18-year-old man ​after another man in his 20s died following ⁠a stabbing the previous night in the central English city of Leicester.

    Leicestershire Police said on X that there had not been a "mass stabbing" in ‌the city, ​adding that speculation was unhelpful.

    De Montfort University had ‍earlier issued a statement saying there had been a "very serious incident" around its campus in the city.
