Virgil van Dijk admits Liverpool's FA Cup loss hurts: 'But you shouldn't give up'

Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk accused his team of giving up and apologised to fans following their FA Cup humiliation at Manchester City.

The Reds' hopes of salvaging domestic silverware from a disappointing season were crushed in a 4-0 quarter-final defeat at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

After an evenly-matched opening half-hour, the visitors capitulated after Van Dijk fouled Nico O'Reilly and Erling Haaland scored the resulting penalty.

Haaland went on to complete a hat trick as as City struck four times in a devastating 18-minute spell spanning the interval.

Arne Slot’s shot at redemption fades away after showreel of embarrassments | Andy Hunter

Spotlight intensifies on Liverpool’s coach, but what of a group of players who in effect surrendered against Manchester City?

Budapest or bust it is, then, for Liverpool’s hopes of silverware this season and quite possibly Arne Slot’s prospects of remaining in his job, although thoughts of this team reaching a Champions League final appear ludicrous in light of their gutless exit from the FA Cup.

A pity whistle on 90.04 from the referee, Michael Oliver, sounded an appropriate death knell for a pitiful performance by the fading Premier League champions. So much for a shot at redemption for Liverpool and Slot as a defining period of five matches in 16 days commenced in humiliating fashion.

Second-tier Southampton have caused a huge shock by beating Premier League leaders Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals after Manchester City dispatched Liverpool 4-0 thanks to a hat-trick by Erling Haaland.

Fresh off losing the English League Cup final to City before the international break, Arsenal saw another potential trophy slip from their grasp on Saturday when they conceded in the 85th minute to lose 2-1 at Southampton – a team in seventh place in the Championship.

A meek FA Cup exit. His heaviest defeat as Liverpool manager. A senior player saying there was no "fighting spirit."

Arne Slot came under renewed pressure on Saturday after a 4-0 thrashing by Manchester City featuring a 20-minute collapse that he could barely explain.

"An unbelievable disappointment," the Dutchman said after Liverpool's elimination in the FA Cup quarter-finals at Etihad Stadium.

NASA’s Van Allen Probe A to Re-Enter Atmosphere

NASA’s Van Allen Probe A is expected to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere almost 14 years after launch. From 2012 to 2019, the spacecraft and its twin, Van Allen Probe B, flew through the Van Allen belts, rings of charged particles trapped by Earth’s magnetic field, to understand how particles were gained and lost. The belts shield Earth from cosmic radiation, solar storms, and the constantly streaming solar wind that are harmful to humans and can damage technology, so understanding them is important.

As of March 9, 2026, the U.S. Space Force predicted that the roughly 1,323-pound spacecraft will re-enter the atmosphere at approximately 7:45 p.m. EDT on March 10, 2026, with an uncertainty of +/- 24 hours. NASA expects most of the spacecraft to burn up as it travels through the atmosphere, but some components are expected to survive re-entry. The risk of harm coming to anyone on Earth is low — approximately 1 in 4,200. NASA and Space Force will continue to monitor the re-entry and update predictions.

Parts of a giant Nasa satellite will crash to Earth on Tuesday evening, the US space agency is warning – but the chance of being struck is extremely low.

According to the US military’s space force, the roughly 1,323lb (600kg) spacecraft, one of a pair of twin probes launched in 2012 to investigate the Van Allen radiation belt, is estimated to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere at about 7.45pm EDT.

Nasa spacecraft weighing 1,300lb due to re-enter Earth's atmosphere

A Van Allen Probe spacecraft weighing more than 1,300lb (600kg) is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere almost 14 years after its launch, Nasa says.

The spacecraft is projected to re-enter around 19:45 EDT (23:45 GMT) on Tuesday the US Space Force predicted, according to Nasa, though there is a 24-hour margin of "uncertainty" in the timing.

The Van Allen Probe A, which launched in 2012, is expected mostly to burn up as it travels through the atmosphere, though some components may survive.

The space agency said there is a one in 4,200 chance of being harmed by a piece of the probe, which it characterised as "low" risk.

A GoFundMe account set up for the family of James Van Der Beek surpassed $1 million as of Thursday morning following the Dawson’s Creek star’s death on Wednesday. The former teen heartthrob, who had been living with Stage 3 colorectal cancer since 2023, was 48.

The GoFundMe page, “Support for James Van Der Beek’s family,” was organized by loved ones of the family, with Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, listed as the beneficiary.

Among the donations is a recurring monthly payment of $2,500 from actress Zoe Saldaña. Acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg and his wife, actress Kate Capshaw, also donated $25,000.

“James Van Der Beek was a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him,” read a statement on the fundraiser’s page. “After a long and courageous battle with cancer, James passed away on February 11, 2026 leaving behind his devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children. Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care.”

“You’ll Never Walk Alone”: The Anfield Spirit Behind Shadley van Schalkwyk’s Historic Night

The scoreboard at the Wankhede Stadium will say that India defeated USA comfortably by 29 runs. But cricket, often cruel in its binary nature of wins and losses, sometimes hides the real victory in the fine print.

On Saturday night, amid the deafening roar of a home crowd cheering for the Men in Blue, Shadley van Schalkwyk etched his name into history. He became the first bowler from an Associate nation to claim a four-wicket haul against India in a Men’s T20 World Cup.

As the adrenaline of the match faded into the humidity of the Mumbai night, van Schalkwyk sat in the corner of the press conference room, waiting for his teammate to complete the mixed zone formality. He wasn’t looking at the stats sheet. He was rolling up his sleeve. On his bicep, inked in black, is a manifesto: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, courage is what counts.”

USA Bowlers Shock India In Stunning T20 World Cup Collapse

Shadley van Schalkwyk and Ali Khan lead a dramatic Indian batting collapse at Wankhede as both teams battle for early supremacy in the ICC T20 World Cup.

Cricket fans at Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium were left stunned on February 7, 2026, as the much-favored Indian cricket team found themselves in unfamiliar territory, reeling at 77 for 6 in just 12.4 overs against a spirited USA side during the opening day of the ICC T20 World Cup. While the world expected a routine display of dominance from India, it was the duo of Shadley van Schalkwyk and Ali Khan who carved their names into cricketing folklore, delivering a performance that will be talked about for years to come.

Comedy icon Dick van Dyke celebrates turning 100: "I still try to dance"

Actor and comedic icon Dick Van Dyke is 100 years young today.

The famed star sang and danced his way into America's heart through his illustrious career that has spanned nearly eight decades.

As part of the celebration this weekend, theaters across the country are showing a new documentary about his life, "Dick Van Dyke: 100th Celebration."

Van Dyke's work helped define a generation. He became one of the biggest actors of his era with the eponymous show "The Dick Van Dyke Show," which ran for five years on CBS.

Early in his career, Van Dyke was quoted as saying he wanted to make films his children could watch. And he got his dream when Walt Disney cast him in "Mary Poppins" – bad cockney accent and all – alongside the incomparable Julie Andrews. He also appeared in the equally kid-friendly "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."
