Backchannel talks gain pace as Pakistan mediates and Iran seeks indirect engagement through US Vice President JD Vance.

Islamabad, Pakistan – Standing before reporters at the White House, US President Donald Trump was asked whether a ceasefire with Iran was within reach.

“We have an active, willing participant on the other side,” he said on Monday, adding that the proposal on the table was “a significant step” before quickly qualifying that “it’s not good enough.”

Pressed on who was leading Washington’s diplomatic push, Trump confirmed what had been unfolding through backchannels for days.

“They’re doing it along with Marco, JD. We have a number of people doing it,” he said, listing Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio among the administration’s lead negotiators for the first time.

JD Vance announces a new memoir about his conversion to Catholicism

The vice-president’s follow-up to Hillbilly Elegy is announced as speculation builds over a 2028 run to succeed Trump

US vice-president JD Vance has announced a new memoir centred on his conversion to Catholicism, adding to mounting speculation about a potential 2028 presidential run.

The book, titled Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, will be published on 16 June by HarperCollins and is described as “a spiritual exploration of what it means to be a Christian across the seasons of Vance’s life”.

In a post on X, Vance said he had been working on the project “for a long time” and described it as an account of rediscovering religion: “Communion is about my personal journey and how I found my way back to faith.”

Gu, who also goes by the anglicised Eileen Gu, was born in San Francisco and educated at Stanford University.

US Vice-President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, have announced they are expecting their fourth child due in July.

The couple announced in a joint statement on social media that they will be having a boy.

"Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him in late July," the post read.

"During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children."

Second lady Usha Vance announces she is pregnant with fourth child

Usha Vance, the wife of Vice-President JD Vance, has announced she is pregnant with her fourth child.

In a post on X, the second lady said she is looking forward to welcoming a boy in late July.

"Usha and the baby are doing well," a statement posted on Tuesday to the second lady's social media account read.

Vance and his wife, Usha, 40, have three young children: Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel.

Usha Vance (née Chilukuri) was born and raised in the working-class suburbs of San Diego, California, to a mechanical engineer father and a molecular biologist mother who had moved to the US from Andhra Pradesh, India.

We got some unexpectedly great economic news this morning: Inflation-adjusted GDP grew at a 4.3 percent annualized rate in the third quarter of this year, a much stronger than expected number. (The release of the numbers, like so much economic data recently, was delayed by the government shutdown earlier this year.) This apparent strong growth stands in odd contrast to other, murkier economic indicators we’ve gotten recently, most notably a rise in the unemployment rate. But as they teach in business school: Growing is better than shrinking!
