    Sjoeke Nusken scored a superb late winner as Chelsea beat Aston Villa in a seven-goal thriller to move up to second in the Women's Super League.

    The Germany midfielder's first-time shot curled into the corner of the net to put the Blues ahead in the 82nd minute, finally breaking Villa's resistance.

    Victory keeps Chelsea's extremely slim title hopes alive and keeps Champions League qualification in their own hands.

    The defending champions were behind after less than two minutes at Kingsmeadow as Villa pounced on a sloppy pass from Chelsea defender Lucy Bronze and Chasity Grant swept home Lynn Wilms' cross.

    Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has lamented her side's defensive showing in their dramatic 4-3 win over Aston Villa in the Women's Super League (WSL).

    Six of the game's goals were scored in seesawing opening 35 minutes, where Villa took an early lead through Chasity Grant. The hosts responded well and scored thrice in seven minutes to go 3-1 up, before again being pegged back by a Kirsty Hanson double.

    The Blues pushed hard for a winner in the second half and their pressure bore reward in the 82nd minute, when Sjoeke Nüsken finished off a flowing move from just inside the box.

    Chelsea vs. Aston Villa, Women’s Super League: Confirmed lineups; how to watch

    We haven’t been used to so many ups and downs in Chelsea Women. They’ve always been atypical in their winning ways and given recent movements and rumours around the squad it seems we’re in for more upheaval — although always on the lookout for an upside.

    Given how we are completely left out of the Women’s Super League title race, our hope lies on beating Manchester United for a Champions League classification spot. There’s no other way around this but winning today’s match at Kingsmeadow.

    Ollie Watkins fired the perfect response to his England snub by helping Aston Villa to a 2-0 win over West Ham.

    Watkins, who has been off colour this season, saw his World Cup dreams suffer a big blow on Friday when he was left out of Thomas Tuchel's squad for this month's friendlies with Uruguay and Japan.

    But his second-half goal, which came after John McGinn opened the scoring, fired Villa to a huge three points in the race for Champions League qualification.

    After seeing rivals Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea all drop points, they produced their best performance for several weeks to end a four-game winless run in the Premier League.

    It is perhaps no coincidence that Aston Villa's recent slump has also coincided with John McGinn missing 10 games with a knee injury.

    In that time they went out of the FA Cup, and lost three league matches as well as drawing another two.

    So the Villa captain's presence was a welcome one in midfield and it was not just the Scot who seemed desperate for Villa to get back to winning ways.

    Ollie Watkins led the line brilliantly as he tried to show England manager Thomas Tuchel what he is missing.

    The striker's recent record has been dismal – just one goal in his previous nine matches – but he showed his quality here to push his claims to be England's favoured striker behind only Harry Kane.

    There is little doubt that Burnley are getting relegated, leaving the Cup as their only hope of salvaging a desperate season but they lacked quality from start to finish on another desperate day for Scott Parker. Mansfield were not necessarily the better side but worked harder for the victory.

    Burnley made nine changes from their surprise win against Crystal Palace in midweek. It was unsurprising that Ashley Barnes was a bit rusty, having played only 138 minutes this season prior to kick-off, although he would have expected to find the net early on when Quilindschy Hartman sent the ball across for him to tap in, only to slide it wide, despite being under no pressure.

    Our last time out against the West Midlands Finest was only a few short weeks ago – and it was a very sorry affair indeed. An early goal from Buendia and a late goal from Watkins gave the Villains their first win on Tyneside since 2005, when Bowyer and Dyer had less-than-romantic feelings towards each other. The first half wasn’t too bad, with close chances for both Tonali and Miley. However, the second half was just so stale that Aston Villa didn’t need to get out of second gear.

    Aston Villa have rebounded from their first loss in two months by beating Nottingham Forest 3-1 to climb into second place in the Premier League.

    Villa captain John McGinn scored twice in the second half on Saturday, building on England striker Ollie Watkins' long-range opener in first-half stoppage time on his 250th appearance for the Birmingham club.

    Watkins continued his impressive form with his fourth strike in three games over the festive period to spearhead an 11th-straight home win for Villa — their best victory sequence at Villa Park since 1990.
