A respiratory virus that doesn’t have a vaccine or a specific treatment regimen is spreading in some parts of California — but there’s no need to sound the alarm just yet, public health officials say.

A majority of Northern California communities have seen high concentrations of human metapneumovirus, or HMPV, detected in their wastewater, according to data from the WastewaterScan Dashboard, a public database that monitors sewage to track the presence of infectious diseases.

A Los Angeles Times data analysis found the communities of Merced in the San Joaquin Valley, and Novato and Sunnyvale in the San Francisco Bay Area have seen increases in HMPV levels in their wastewater between mid-December and the end of February.

What to know about the virus with no vaccine, treatment hitting certain states

Cases of human metapneumovirus, or HMPV, are hitting certain states, including California and New Jersey.

HMPV can cause upper and lower respiratory disease, and currently there is no vaccine to prevent it and no specific antiviral therapy to treat it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Instead, medical care can be “supportive,” the CDC notes, which often involves treating symptoms. "Most people will recover on their own," the agency notes, but adds people who get sick should drink plenty of liquids, stay home and rest.

The Cleveland Clinic says treatments for the virus can include oxygen therapy if the patient has a hard time breathing.

What is India’s Nipah virus and should Australians be worried?

COURTNEY BEMBRIDGE, REPORTER:  Thermal screening at airports, quarantining and testing and a deadly virus that spreads from bats to humans.

This time, we’re talking about Nipah virus after two cases were recorded in India's West Bengal state.

Countries across Asia have stepped up their measures including India, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Nipah spreads from animals to humans putting it in the same category as COVID and Ebola.

The virus comes from fruit bats but can spread to other animals and humans through contaminated food.

It can also spread from human to human through close contact.

Nipah Virus Outbreak Has Asia on High Alert Amid Deaths in India

An outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus in India has put many countries in Asia on high alert, given the fatality rate in humans can be between 40% and 75%.

Several countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, have introduced new screening and testing measures, after at least two people died of Nipah virus in the Indian state of West Bengal this month.

But what is Nipah virus, and how concerned should we be?

Like Hendra virus, Nipah is in a category of viruses called henipaviruses. It is zoonotic, meaning it can spread from animals to humans.

It's prompted multiple countries in Asia to step up airport screenings to prevent the spread of the infection, which at this stage has no vaccine or proven treatment. However, experts say while it's a dangerous virus with a high fatality rate, it doesn't spread easily from person-to-person.

Nipah virus: Some Asia airports screen passengers after outbreak in India

An outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus in India's West Bengal state has sparked concern in parts of Asia, with some tightening screening measures at airports.

Thailand has started screening passengers at three airports that receive flights from West Bengal. Nepal has also begun screening arrivals at Kathmandu airport and other land border points with India.

Two cases have been confirmed in West Bengal since December, reportedly in healthcare workers. Some 196 people who were in contact with them have been traced and tested negative for the virus, India's health ministry says.

The virus can spread from animals to humans. It has a high death range – ranging from 40% to 75% – as there is no vaccine or medicine to treat it.

Region on watch as India declares Nipah virus outbreak contained

Several Asian countries have introduced screening measures for arrivals from India, as New Delhi seeks to dampen alarm.

Seeking to dampen alarm in the region, Indian officials have declared that an outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus has been contained.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said late on Tuesday that it has ensured “timely containment” as it confirmed two cases in West Bengal state. Several Asian countries have introduced screening procedures for travellers arriving from India.

The ministry said 196 contacts linked to the confirmed cases had been “identified, traced, monitored, and tested”, with all tests for the virus negative. It said the statement was intended to clarify “speculative and incorrect figures” in the media.
