Iran war live: US vows ‘economic D-Day’; Tehran threatens Gulf oil exports

Draft law says ships of countries permitted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz will pay for services provided by Tehran.

Iran vows to retaliate against countries that cooperate with fresh US sanctions

Test of US rhetoric will rest on whether nations such as India, China and Russia view economic threats as credible

Tehran has vowed to retaliate against any country that cooperates with the US attempt to impose fresh sanctions against Iran in what the Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, has billed as “the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary”.

In advance of the US announcement, the United Arab Emirates, Iran’s single biggest trading partner in the Middle East, announced it was ending all trade with Iran, a move Tehran believes was coordinated between Washington and the UAE.

The US has said it will impose sanctions on any country or entity trading with Iran – what are known as secondary sanctions.

Iran faces 'greatest financial offensive ever', says US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent

The US treasury secretary has threated Iran with "the single greatest financial offensive ever", claiming the US-Israel war with Iran was "entering its endgame".

Scott Bessent said the US would sever all economic ties with the country in "an economic D-Day" and that any nation partnering with Iran financially would also be isolated.

Bessent's threat to the Iranian regime follows several U-turns and extended deadlines from US President Donald Trump's administration on previous threats.

Iran dismissed Bessent's comments and said it would shut down all oil exports from the region "if the war continues", according to news agency Reuters.

The Iranian regime has also issued a new warning to shipping not to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without its permission, the agency reported.

US Stock Market: Inflation gathers pace as tariffs, energy costs and AI investment lift price pressures, says Fed

U.S. inflation accelerated further during the spring as higher tariffs, rising energy costs linked to geopolitical tensions and heavy investment in artificial intelligence added to price pressures, according to the Federal Reserve's latest monetary policy report to Congress, Reuters reported.

The report said inflation remains above the U.S. central bank's 2% target, with the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, running at roughly twice that level as of May. The findings underscore the central bank's continued struggle to bring inflation back to target despite holding interest rates steady since December.

At the same time, the Fed said the labour market has largely stabilised, with labour demand and supply broadly in balance. The unemployment rate stood at 4.2% in June, while job openings have remained largely unchanged and layoffs have stayed subdued.

Paolo Banchero has led the eighth-seeded Orlando Magic to a stunning upset win over top-seeded hosts Detroit, extending the longest home playoff losing streak in NBA history.

Banchero scored 23 points and had nine rebounds and four assists in a 112-101 victory on Sunday night in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round series.

Detroit have now dropped 11 straight home games in the postseason, a drought that dates to 2008.

3 things to watch in Magic-Pistons Game 2

Detroit is hoping to match Orlando's physical intensity and play better in the paint as Game 2 approaches.

Cade Cunningham bore the brunt of Detroit’s scoring in Game 1. Will he get some help in Game 2?

It’s odd how easily postseason history can crowd out recency bias, normally a powerful psychological trait that can anchor one’s thoughts and opinions.

The Detroit Pistons might reasonably expect their hard work and demonstrated results – winning 60 games, snagging the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed – to resonate with fans and the basketball world beyond the disappointment of a single game at Little Caesars Arena.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is vowing to retaliate with equal force if the US strikes its electricity assets, Reuters reports.

In a statement addressing US forces, the Revolutionary Guard vowed that “if you hit electricity, we hit electricity”.

The Guard said it was determined to respond to any threat at the “same level” for deterrence. In the event of an attack on power plants, Iran would retaliate against Israel’s power plants, and regional power plants that supply electricity to American bases, it said.

LIVE UPDATES: Aussie trucking industry issues dire warning; Iran's military says Strait of Hormuz will be 'completely closed' if US bombs power plants; ASX falls, loses $56 billion

Hello and welcome to our live rolling coverage of the war in the Middle East this Monday, March 23.

Iran has responded after US President Donald Trump threatened to "obliterate" its power plants if the Strait of Hormuz wasn't opened within 48 hours.

At least six ships carrying oil bound for Australia have been cancelled as the federal government admits working from home can help remedy the fuel crisis.

Iran warned any strike on its energy facilities would prompt attacks on US and Israeli energy and infrastructure assets — specifically information technology and desalination facilities — in the region.

Meanwhile, the Australian transport industry has warned the fuel crisis caused by the war could prove catastrophic.
