Winter is sticking around despite the calendar telling everyone it's spring.

The National Weather Service issued a new winter weather advisory for three states expecting to see heavy snowfall over the weekend and into early next week.

"An upper-level energy moving onshore over California on Saturday will move to the Upper Midwest by Monday evening," the NWS said. "The system will produce rain with embedded thunderstorms over parts of Northern California and Nevada on Saturday and Sunday."

"The system will produce late-season light snowfall over the higher elevations of the Northern Rockies, the Northern Intermountain Region, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Great Basin, and the Central Rockies Saturday into Sunday."

Integrated epidemiological and molecular data inform the relationship between precancer and cancer states of esophageal adenocarcinoma

Cancer generally takes years to evolve, and early diagnosis can prevent life-threatening cancer. Establishing a link between precancerous states and cancer is essential for effective screening and prevention. Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is an increasingly prevalent, poor-outcome cancer, and its presumed precursor, Barrett’s esophagus (BE), characterized by intestinal metaplasia, is evident in only about half of cases. Here to test whether BE is a prerequisite to EAC, we integrated epidemiological and clinical characteristics in a prospective cohort of 3,100 patients with EAC for any evidence of BE (BE-positive and BE-negative) and compared genomic features using a subset of 710 patients with whole-genome sequencing and 87 patients (380 samples) with multiregional whole-exome sequencing. Demographic and genomic features typically associated with BE were observed across BE-positive and BE-negative EAC cases. Notably, molecular features consistent with early BE evolution were detected in both phenotypes. Advanced tumor stage was the only variable that corresponded with increased likelihood of BE-negative EAC, including in some patients with a previous BE diagnosis. Phylogenetic analyses revealed shared evolutionary trajectories, and spatial transcriptomic and proteomic analyses demonstrated intestinal metaplasia-associated lineage markers in both groups. These findings suggest a single pathway to EAC, with implications for early diagnosis and prevention strategies.

The warning signs of coercive control as NSW jails first offender

A landmark moment in the fight against domestic abuse has been reached, with the first person in NSW jailed after being found guilty of coercive control — a silent crisis affecting about a quarter of Australian women.

Callum Fairleigh, 34, was sentenced in February to two years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of 15 months, becoming the first person in NSW to receive jail time under the state’s new coercive control laws after the offence was criminalised in July 2024.

“I felt a sense of relief. I still fight in my mind that I’m dramatic because he kept drilling into my head that what was happening wasn’t so bad,” she said.

Heavy winds bring power outages for thousands across Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — A storm that is expected to bring rain in the valley and snow to the mountains has also brought with it strong winds that have left over a thousand people in Utah without power on Tuesday morning.

According to Rocky Mountain Power's Outage map, over 1,600 customers are without power in northern Utah. A majority of those outages are in the Salt Lake Valley, with hundreds also without power near Vernal.

Some outages have also been reported in southern and eastern Utah.

The utility company listed wind as the main cause of the outages. Most of the outages are estimated to be restored before 11:00 a.m.

Strong winds, winter storms force road restrictions for several highways across Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Several road restrictions were implemented across Utah as strong winds swept the state late Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Early Tuesday morning, the Utah Department of Transportation prohibited high-profile vehicles such as semi-trucks and RVs from driving on I-80 through Tooele County due to high winds. The restrictions were also extended to other light vehicles that could be at risk of blowing over.

State Route 143 near Brian Head and State Route 14 near Cedar City were also closed in both directions due to strong winds, prompting UDOT to force drivers onto alternate routes.

The restrictions come as heavy winds blow in a series of winter storms into the state. The National Weather Service said strong winds with gusts hitting above 60 miles per hour were expected, especially in the area of I-80 in Tooele County.
