Trump warns 'whole civilisation will die' if Iran does not do a deal — as it happened

Donald Trump has ramped up his threats to Iran, saying a "whole civilisation will die tonight" if the regime does not do a deal to end the war.

It came as the US and Israel pounded the country with strikes.

Meanwhile, Turkish authorities have said at least one attacker has been killed and two others wounded in a gunfight with police outside a building housing the Israeli Consulate in Istanbul.

At a press conference in Canberra, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said there were fewer petrol shortages in Australia today than before Easter.

But we will continue to cover the latest developments from the Middle East on our new blog.

World energy watchdog warns the fuel crisis is 'very severe'

Fatih Birol will recommend releasing further stockpiled fuel if the crisis continues and conditions call for it. (ABC News: Matt Roberts)

International Energy Agency chief Fatih Birol says major damage to energy assets in the Middle East will create supply problems in the future, even after the Iran war ends.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his Singaporean counterpart have issued a joint statement committing to strengthening the energy supply chain in the region.

More emergency reserves of oil could be released if the war continues to impact the supply and price of fuel.

World leaders have failed to grasp the depth of the energy crisis created by the Iran war, the head of the International Energy Agency has warned.

Iran war energy crisis equal to 70s twin oil shocks and fallout from Ukraine war, says IEA chief

Fatih Birol says effect on energy markets of Iran bombings and closure of Hormuz strait not initially understood by world leaders

The global energy crisis caused by the war in Iran is equivalent to the combined force of the twin oil shocks of the 1970s and the fallout of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the head of the International Energy Agency has warned.

Fatih Birol, the IEA’s executive director, said the growing fallout could be seriously compounded through interuptions to the “vital arteries of the global economy”, including petrochemicals, fertilisers, sulfur and helium.

Speaking at the National Press Club of Australia in Canberra on Monday, Birol said the depth of the problems in energy markets caused by American and Israeli bombings in Iran, and the closure of the stragetic strait of Hormuz, had not initally been properly understood by world leaders.

NAB warns rising petrol prices could drive inflation above 5 per cent

Fuel prices hit more than $2.25 in Sydney today. (ABC News: John Gunn)

Global oil prices have spiked dramatically amid war in the Middle East, with Brent crude rising more than 25 per cent this afternoon.

Petrol prices have surged, with some motorists reporting prices as high as $2.42 a litre in WA.

Economists at NAB warn inflation could peak above 5 per cent as fuel prices rise due to the skyrocketing cost of oil.

Oil prices climbed 25 per cent today, with Brent crude surpassing $US115 a barrel, as analysts label it a "furious rise" amid war in the Middle East.

Australians have already felt pain at the petrol pump, with fuel prices as high as $2.42 in parts of the country and wholesalers restricting supply.

Events in the Middle East will cast a shadow over Australia's economy with the widening conflict potentially impacting inflation.

While this week will feature a lull in the volume of major data released, developments in the Middle East will be watched keenly by the Reserve Bank for any sign of impact on domestic markets.

The central bank's governor, Michele Bullock, warned on Tuesday it would be too early to tell what the effect would be, with supply shocks adding to inflation pressures.

Not just petrol: what else could Iran war cost Bendigo residents?

The pain could get "a lot higher" for Bendigo residents, a local real estate agent says as people race to understand the long-term economic effects of inflation.

It comes as shockwaves from the fight over Iran's future reverberate through more of Bendigo household finances than petrol prices.

Multiple petrol stations ran out of unleaded petrol over parts of the weekend and many people have been stocking up as prices surge.

While it is still too soon to understand the long-term economic effects of the Middle East conflict, PH Property director Brad Hinton has warned if interest rates were to go up the pain would be "a lot higher" for those with high mortgages.

Rhyan Grant says Sydney FC haven't forgotten Brisbane Roar's antics as they face each other for the first time since a pre-season game between the teams descended into chaos and was abandoned by officials.

As a quirk of the A-League Men draw, Saturday's round-18 meeting at Allianz Stadium is the first time the Sky Blues and the Roar will meet in the league this season.

Talay – We need to manage moments better

Sydney FC Head Coach Ufuk Talay says his side must combine composure with intensity when they host Brisbane Roar at Allianz Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With three games in the space of a week, Talay confirmed his squad has handled the short turnaround well heading into another pivotal fixture in the run home.

“They’ll get their last session in this morning in preparation for Brisbane. It’s been a short turnaround again — three games in a week — but overall the boys are looking fine and ready to go.”

Talay also addressed his on-field exchange with Al Hassan Toure during the week, making it clear there are no lingering issues.

FTC Lawsuit Against Ticketmaster Poised to Revolutionize Concert Ticket Sales

In a significant move that could reshape the concert ticketing landscape, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a lawsuit against Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment. This legal action, initiated in September 2025, is backed by seven U.S. states and centers around allegations of illegal ticket resale practices.

The FTC’s lawsuit claims that Ticketmaster has engaged in deceptive practices detrimental to both consumers and artists. Central to the complaint are accusations of illegal ticket resale practices, leading to inflated prices that ordinary fans cannot afford.

The FTC alleges that Ticketmaster allowed brokers to exploit its platform by purchasing large quantities of tickets beyond specified limits. These brokers reportedly utilized bots and created multiple fake accounts to acquire tickets from the primary market. Consequently, fans miss the opportunity to buy tickets at face value and instead face exorbitant resale prices.

Telstra says it has identified an issue with some older iPhone models, saying some users may face issues connecting to their network, including to make Triple Zero calls.

Users of three iPhone models have been urged to install a fix to regain access to the Telstra network after days of no service for some customers, in what is the latest telco glitch that left affected Australians temporarily unable to make Triple Zero emergency calls.

By Thursday afternoon, Apple had issued a patch to fix the last of the problems that had stopped users of three older iPhone models from connecting to Telstra since a software update released on January 26.

The reliability of Triple Zero services has come under scrutiny since a major outage at Optus last year was initially linked to four deaths, though police later clarified the emergency call issue did not contribute to two of the fatalities.

A software update designed to prevent issues with older iPhones connecting to Triple Zero is stopping some Apple devices from reaching Telstra’s network, including for emergency calls.

Problems began after Apple released software updates for several of its iPhone and cellular Apple Watch models on Tuesday, which included devices as old as 2014's iPhone 6.

The updates were designed to prevent issues with calls to emergency services, and included other bug fixes.

Míchel warns about Getafe and demands the best version of Girona at Montilivi

The Girona FC coach, Míchel Sánchez, appeared before the media ahead of the next league match against Getafe, starting his speech with a message of condolence, stating: “First, I want to express my condolences to the victims of the train accidents in Adamuz and Gelida, and also to Getafe player Davinchi, who lost his father in the same accident.”

Already focusing on football, Míchel highlighted the importance of having top-level players and emphasized the figure of Marc-André ter Stegen, stating that “Ter Stegen is a very top player and makes us better,” thus underlining the impact that these types of profiles have on collective performance.

Montilivi wants to extend Girona's winning streak

This Monday, January 26 at 9 p.m., Girona returns to Montilivi to host Getafe in the match of the 21st round of the EA Sports League. The team has started the second half of the season in the best possible way with an away victory against Espanyol. This result means that Michel's team has achieved three consecutive victories – the best streak of the season – against Espanyol, Osasuna, and Mallorca. This places them in eleventh place with 24 points. At the moment, the standings are very tight with three other teams having the same points: Elche, Real Sociedad, and Athletic Club; two with 22, Osasuna and Rayo Vallecano, and three with 21, Sevilla, Mallorca, and Getafe.
