Romantic Warrior Sweeps Hong Kong Triple Crown
Romantic Warrior clinches the Triple Crown with a victory in the Champions and Chater Cup at Sha Tin Racecourse
Romantic Warrior conquered one his few remaining challenges May 24 at Sha Tin Racecourse, seeing out the 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) of the Champions and Chater Cup (G1) to become only the third claimant of the Hong Kong Triple Crown.
The 8-year-old holds the all-time world earnings record. He has won group/grade 1 races around the world. He has repeatedly defended Hong Kong turf against some of the globe's top runners.
He had not, however, successfully completed 2,400 meters—the test that completes a Triple Crown that covers first 1,600 meters (about 1 mile), then 2,000 meters (about 1 1/4 miles) before the final marathon.

Raging favourite Romantic Warrior travelled effectively one-out, one-back and wore down Numbers in the concluding stages for a 24th win and all six starts this term from 31 career outings. He is one-of-a-kind and the win wrapped up a sweep of the Triple Crown. Numbers kept on gamely for second after moving forward to challenge Romantic Thor for the lead 700m out before going clear 400m out. It was a fantastic run in defeat and he is one to follow in the staying events next season. Deep Monster stayed on nicely for third after getting badly balked for a run 200m out by the winner following a prominent run on the fence. He should have finished closer. Romantic Thor grudgingly gave way after leading from gate one. It was a solid run at level weights off the lowest handicap.

Star Kiwi jockey James McDonald has been suspended and fined HK$120,000 over his ride on Romantic Warrior in the Champions & Chater Cup Group 1 in Hong Kong on Sunday. And it means the 2021 Melbourne Cup winner will miss the Queensland Oaks meeting back on Australian soil.
McDonald steered Romantic Warrior to victory in the 2400m feature race, winning his 20th Group 1 of the season. The win saw Romantic Warrior join River Verdon and Voyage Bubble as just the third horse in history to win the ‘Triple Crown’ in Hong Kong.
The Triple Crown includes the 1600m Stewards’ Cup, Hong Kong Gold Cup (2000m) and the Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2400m). It was the 13th time McDonald has ridden Romantic Warrior to victory.
