Arthur Gea on facing Stan Wawrinka: 'I grew up watching him!'

Arthur Gea, the surprise winner over Jiri Lehecka in the first round of the Australian Open, shared his thoughts in a press conference. The qualifier, ranked 198th in the world, also looked ahead to his upcoming second-round match against veteran and soon-to-retire Stan Wawrinka.

'It's a pleasure; he's one of the guys I've watched my whole life, I'm so happy to play him. We'll probably play on a nice court again. That's also why I love tennis—for the emotions it brings, so I'm super happy.'

Why Stan Wawrinka's last dance will be more salsa than slow waltz

That’s not a phrase that sits well with Stan Wawrinka as he begins his 25th and final season on the ATP Tour.

Send your well wishes and accolades and they will be received politely and with appreciation. But Switzerland’s other tennis treasure is determined to crown – rather than tarnish – one of the finest careers of the past 20 years by doing in 2026 what he does best: fighting with all his might to win as many matches as possible.

For evidence, look no further than Wawrinka’s season opener at the United Cup in Perth: Toiling for three hours and 18 minutes in baking heat, the 40-year-old rallied from a set down to upset Top 30 Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in a third-set tie-break. It was a spirited victory – the 583rd of his career – that backed up his comments just one day earlier to ATPTour.com.

Bencic, Wawrinka lead Swiss sweep of France at United Cup

Belinda Bencic opened the 2026 United Cup for Switzerland with a 6-2, 6-4 win over France's Leolia Jeanjean in 1 hour and 31 minutes at RAC Arena. Followed by Stan Wawrinka's three-set thrilling victory over Arthur Rinderknech and a mixed-doubles win, the Swiss swept the tie in Group C.

Switzerland couldn’t have asked for a much better start to its 2026 United Cup campaign than the ones Belinda Bencic and Stan Wawrinka delivered Saturday in Perth.

To cap the strong afternoon, Bencic and Jakub Paul defeated Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in mixed doubles.

Bencic dropped the opening game against France’s Leolia Jeanjean, but never trailed again, rolling to a 6-2, 6-4 win at RAC Arena in 1 hour and 31 minutes. The victory — sealed with a backhand winner down the line — gave Switzerland a 1-0 lead in its tie against France prior to the men’s singles match between Wawrinka and Arthur Rinderknech.

PERTH, Australia — Stan Wawrinka's 40-year-old legs didn't let him down over three-plus hours in his first singles match of a 2026 farewell tour Saturday.
