    Miles is a dynamic pass-first point guard. She finished seventh in the nation with an average of 6.6 assists, and that aspect of her game could take another leap playing alongside a higher level of talent and creator than she had on the roster at TCU. Her shooting has improved since her breakout seasons at Notre Dame. Her defense needs improvement, but her court vision is good enough to justify teams taking her high, and Minnesota needed a young point guard.

    Azzi Fudd is the second daughter of a former draftee to be selected in the draft herself. In 2001, Katie Fudd (then Katie Smrcka-Duffy) was picked No 62 overall by the Sacramento Monarchs. Pamela McGee and Imani McGee-Stafford were the first.

    After back-to-back years in which the top pick in the WNBA Draft was a foregone conclusion — Caitlin Clark to the Indiana Fever in 2024, Paige Bueckers to the Dallas Wings in 2025 — the No. 1 in the 2026 iteration remained a mystery all the way until the first pick's announcement Monday.

    TCU guard Olivia Miles, and Spanish center Awa Fam, also were considered in the running.

    Fudd, 23, averaged 17.3 points per game in her final collegiate season, her best scoring season for the Huskies. She won a championship in 2025 with Bueckers as her teammate, but she struggled in the tournament this year. In her last three games at UConn, Fudd averaged only 10.3 points, scoring only eight in a season-ending loss to South Carolina in the Final Four.

    Netflix’s MLB debut included “make-good” ads from NFL shortfalls

    The 2026 Major League Baseball season opened Wednesday on Netflix. (I didn’t watch; I gave up on baseball after the Pirates lost the 1992 NLCS.)

    The broadcast, as explained by John Ourand of Puck, had connective tissue to Netflix’s most recent NFL foray.

    As Ourand explains in his Varsity newsletter, several ads that appeared during the Yankees-Giants game from San Francisco were “make-goods” due to Netflix’s failure to deliver numbers it had promised to advertisers for the Christmas doubleheader featuring Cowboys-Commanders and Lions-Vikings.

    The games generated 19.9 million viewers for Cowboys-Commanders and 27.5 million for Lions-Vikings; however, Netflix fell short of the guarantees for the 18-54 demographic — reportedly by 18 percent.

    Geelong Cats forward Shaun Mannagh will remain in the Hoops until at least the end of 2029 after re-signing with the Club for a further three seasons

    Geelong Cats forward Shaun Mannagh will remain in the Hoops until at least the end of 2029 after re-signing with the Club for a further three seasons.

    Selected at Pick 36 in the 2023 National Draft, Mannagh made his debut in Round 1 of 2024, going on to play 12 games in his first season, including every match from Round 17 through to Geelong’s Finals campaign.

    He built on an impressive debut season with an even stronger 2025, quickly establishing himself as one of the Cats’ most pivotal players, across 23 matches in 2025, he finished with 31 goals and 20 goal assists, ranking among Geelong’s top five players in both categories.

    Mannagh commits to Cats

    Geelong has locked away its most important out-of-contract player, with Shaun Mannagh putting pen to paper on a contract extension.

    The 28-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year contract extension, keeping him at GMHBA Stadium until the end of the 2029 season.

    Drafted as a 26-year-old in the 2023 National Draft after starring with VFL club Werribee, including kicking six goals in its grand final loss that year, Mannagh has played 37 games and kicked 50 goals since making his debut in Round 1, 2024.

    He was named the AFL Coaches’ Association’s Best Young Player last year.

    “Shaun has quickly become an important part of our Club on and off the field, and we’re thrilled to see him commit for another three years,” Cats football boss Andrew Mackie said.

    Internal conflicts, resignations plague France's 2030 Winter Olympics prep

    The International Olympic Committee confirmed France and Salt Lake City will host the 2030 and 2034 Winter Games.

    With all eyes on the Milan Cortina Olympics, the organization of the Winter Games in France in four years' time is faltering.

    Internal tensions have multiplied in recent months, against a backdrop of several resignations, culminating in open conflict between former Olympic gold medalist Edgar Grospiron, who is leading the project, and Cyril Linette, the director general now on his way out.

    After a meeting of all stakeholders from the organizing committee, French organizers released a statement on Wednesday that acknowledged “the existence of irreconcilable disagreements between president Edgar Grospiron and director general Cyril Linette.”
