    The popular presenter is by no means the first to have come a cropper hosting a talkshow. But new formats provide new opportunities

    You might think the TV chatshow is an easy format to get right. Hire a well-liked host with comic chops and some successful shows under their belt. Build a cheerful set with a big sofa in the middle. Book some A-list celebs plus the obligatory comedian, invite a live audience et voilà! A prime-time hit is surely born.

    Except that time and time again, it has proved not to be that simple. Just ask Claudia Winkleman, who revealed last week that she won’t be returning to do a second season of The Claudia Winkleman Show on the BBC. The series, which launched in March, filling the gap while The Graham Norton Show was on hiatus, was received with lukewarm reviews and so-so ratings. The decision to call time on it is reported to be Winkleman’s – “I was just too nervous to enjoy it,” she admitted – though, given the cuts rippling through the corporation, she may have opted to jump before being pushed.

    Claudia Winkleman’s chat show was doomed from the start

    She's become the best presenter in British entertainment by hiding her ego. But chat shows need you to show off

    It is very Claudia Winkleman to blame the failure of her chat show on herself. Usually when a TV programme flops or gets the heave-ho, the talent associated with it either get defensive and blame the schedule or the concept, or they never mention it again and hope everyone forgets about it.

    But this is Winkleman, who has never turned down an opportunity for self-deprecation – when the series was announced last year she said, “I’m obviously going to be awful”. And so while her decision to call time on it, after only seven episodes that began in March, is a shock, her humility, vulnerability, and grace about it is precisely on-brand.

    BBC spin-off axed in current form for Traitors-style vodcast after hosts quit

    HAVING already lost hosts Fleur East and Janette Manrara, Strictly spin-off show It Takes Two is getting another big overhaul.

    When it returns in September, it will be in the form of a vodcast, similar to that of The Traitors: Uncloaked and The Apprentice: You’re Fired.

    The move comes as the BBC dance contest is undergoing top-to-toe changes, with new pros as well as new presenters to replace Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.
