Disgraced ex-Australian Rules footballer Nicky Winmar has been removed from the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

Earlier this month, Winmar was found guilty of three counts of unlawful assault and common law assault, but was acquitted of a fourth charge of intentionally causing injury.

In a statement, AFL Commission chair Craig Drummond said violence against women "has no place".

"Not in our community, not in our game, and not in the values the Australian Football Hall of Fame seeks to uphold," Mr Drummond said.

He played 251 AFL games with St Kilda and Western Bulldogs but was originally from Western Australia.

AFL banishes Nicky Winmar from Australian Football Hall of Fame after assault conviction

Former AFL star Nicky Winmar has been removed from the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

The AFL Commission revoked his membership following the former St Kilda champion’s recent conviction for assaulting a woman, while the Saints have suspended the club great from their Hall of Fame.

The commission has the power to remove an inductee through amendments made to the Hall of Fame’s charter in 2023.

It can remove an inductee “if they have been charged with or found guilty of an indictable offence and/or if the inductee engages in conduct which the commission considers is prejudicial to the interests of the AFL or is conduct which brings the AFL, the inductee, or Australian Football into disrepute”.

The statue of former AFL player Neil Elvis "Nicky" Winmar has been taken down at Perth Stadium less than two days after a Victorian court found him guilty of assaulting a woman.

The bronze statue was unveiled in July 2019, in the lead-up to NAIDOC Week and as a symbol against racism in the AFL — seven years later, it was removed on the first day of NAIDOC Week.

The bronze statue was taken down by a crane, and a crew of roughly six people around 6:45am on Sunday local time after WA Premier Roger Cook ordered its removal on Friday.

Nicky Winmar’s statue removed from Optus Stadium after assault conviction

Nicky Winmar’s statue has been removed from out the front of Perth’s Optus Stadium days after the disgraced AFL great was found guilty of assaulting a woman in northern Victoria last year.

Winmar – who played 230 games at St Kilda and 21 for the Western Bulldogs after beginning his football career at South Fremantle in the WAFL – had argued the woman lied about the attack, but a magistrate disagreed and convicted him of three charges.

The 60-year-old was accused of dragging the woman by her hair, pushing her into a wall, spitting and yelling at her, and smashing her head repeatedly against a door at a property in Cohuna in May 2025.
