Norway’s Weng comes in to take silver, who will take bronze? This will comes down to a sprint.

Andersson goes into Klaebo mode on the final climb and enters the stadium all alone. She’s been the silver lady so far in this Games, but now gets her golden moment.

Taking a brief switch over the cross country, Sweden’s Ebba Andersson has a huge lead with less than 5km to go. She well away for gold and Heidi Weng has a decent gap for second, but the shake up for bronze could be interesting with five athletes all in with a shout.

Winter Olympics 2026: How Eileen Gu divides opinion

Eileen Gu has won double silver at the 2026 Winter Olympics so far

Wherever Eileen Gu goes, her fans will follow. Headlines will too.

With five medals – and the opportunity for one more on Saturday – she is the most decorated female Olympic freestyle skier in history.

But she is also someone who transcends her sport, a 22-year-old global superstar with a bank balance to make your eyes water.

China fell in love with its 'snow princess' at the Beijing 2022 Olympics where, as the poster girl of the Games, she duly delivered.

She became freestyle skiing's youngest Olympic champion with her big air and halfpipe golds at the age of 18, and the first to win three medals at the same Games when she added slopestyle silver.

Eileen Gu, amid Olympic cameras and controversy, is living in a unique reality – The Athletic

LIVIGNO, Italy — Even if she’s not outwardly courting controversy, it always seems to find her. Eileen Gu is 22 years old, competing in her second Olympic Games, so often at the center of a storm.

“Sometimes I feel like I’m carrying the weight of two countries on my shoulders,” Gu said in Livigno last week, where the freeskier claimed her fifth career medal Monday night with a silver in the women’s big air event. She’s doing so under the glare of one of the most intense spotlights at these Games, but unlike Ilia Malinin, Mikaela Shiffrin and Marco Odermatt, so little of that glare is tied to her performance.

Eileen Gu is a brilliant college student who moonlights as a cover model and can also pull off a right double cork 1620 before landing safely on the side of an Alp.

She speaks fluent English and fluent Mandarin, scored a 1560 on her SAT, and made it through rush at Kappa Kappa Gamma. She's passionate about quantum physics, yet is an international studies major at Stanford, although not this year because of the Winter Olympics, where on Monday she won her fifth career medal, a silver in freeski big air. She next competes in the freeski halfpipe finals Saturday.

Brady Tkachuk admits to ‘hatred’ as US and Canada prepare for Olympic men’s ice hockey final

The US and Canada are prepared for a stormy men’s ice hockey final on Sunday as the long-time rivals face off for Winter Olympic gold.

This year’s Olympics mark the first time NHL players have competed at the Winter Games since 2014, meaning many of the best players in the world will face each other on Sunday. While Canada are the betting favourites – and have won the most ice hockey golds in Olympic history – the US players say they have motivation to upset their northern neighbours.

“There’s hatred there,” USA’s Brady Tkachuk told ESPN on Saturday. “I mean, they’ve been the top dog. They’ve been the best for the last bunch of years, and for us, we want to be in that position, be the best. So it’s going to be a game where I think a lot of guys could say, this is the biggest game that they’ve ever played in.”

Russia remain banned from competing as a nation but some individual athletes are permitted to participate in the Games under a neutral banner

This year’s Winter Olympics, which officially kicked off on 6 February in Milan, features athletes from 92 different countries.

But two will be conspicuous by their absence: Russia and Belarus.

Both countries were suspended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2023 for violating the Olympic Charter, meaning they cannot compete at the Winter Olympics.

Olympic figure skater Adeliia Petrosian represents 'AIN.' What is AIN?

The women's figure skating short program at 2026 Winter Olympics started today as "Blade Angels" Alyssa Liu, Amber Glenn and Isabeau Levito aim for gold, but there's much mystery surrounding Olympic skater Adeliia Petrosian's "AIN" Olympic designation.

An "AIN" Olympic athlete refers to a "neutral" Olympian from Russia or Belarus who is not allowed to represent their country because they violated the Olympic truce, according to the International Olympics Committee. Russia and Belarus are banned from the 2026 Winter Olympics due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, brought on by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2022.

At the 2026 Winter Olympics, there is no "neutral" AIN flag, and no Russian flags, no Russian anthems, and no Russian national colors. This also means no Belarusian flags, no playing of the Belarusian National Anthem, and no Belarus national colors. Here's more to know about AIN.

IOC 'appear ready' to lift Russia Olympic ban with potential return date targeted

A new report has suggested that leaders of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are 'moving closer' to reinstating Russia and Belarus, with a potential return date for athletes being mentioned.

Within weeks of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the IOC and other major governing bodies moved to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competition.

The IOC has since allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete as individual neutral athletes.

Three years on and the Russian and Belarusian national teams continue to be banned from competing under their national flag, although a number of high-profile figures have urged bodies to make a change.

2026 Winter Olympics: Follow live updates Wednesday from Milan Cortina

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Mikaela Shiffrin makes her final 2026 Winter Olympics appearance on Wednesday in the slalom.

The most decorated Alpine skier of all time, Shiffrin is the favorite in this race, and she has been dominant in the slalom. This season alone, she has won seven of of eight starts and already clinched her ninth slalom Crystal Globe. However, Shiffrin hasn't medaled in her past eight Olympic starts, setting the stage for potential redemption.

Shiffrin had an outstanding first run on Wednesday morning, and is currently in first place.

Milano-Cortina: Can 'the GOAT' Mikaela Shiffrin overcome the yips?

American slalom skier Mikaela Shiffrin is one of the sport's best, but when it comes to performing at the Olympic Games in recent times she's succumbed to the pressure. With one event to go in her program, can she overcome her nerves? Plus a missed opportunity for Australia to increase its record medal tally and we speak to a very proud father.

The favorite in slalom, Mikaela Shiffrin aims for Olympic gold

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy — On Wednesday, Mikaela Shiffrin will enter the start gate of the Olympic slalom as the favorite for gold. On Sunday, she took a giant step toward that result.

Shiffrin was not expected to medal in Sunday's giant slalom. Despite being the 2018 Olympic gold medalist in the event, and the all-time World Cup wins leader, Shiffrin only recently returned to a GS podium in January. Less than a year ago, she didn't know if she would ever stand in another giant slalom start gate.

"After the injury last year and then returning to GS racing, I was so far off," Shiffrin said Sunday. "I felt like there was no hope to be faster."

Internal conflicts, resignations plague France's 2030 Winter Olympics prep

The International Olympic Committee confirmed France and Salt Lake City will host the 2030 and 2034 Winter Games.

With all eyes on the Milan Cortina Olympics, the organization of the Winter Games in France in four years' time is faltering.

Internal tensions have multiplied in recent months, against a backdrop of several resignations, culminating in open conflict between former Olympic gold medalist Edgar Grospiron, who is leading the project, and Cyril Linette, the director general now on his way out.

After a meeting of all stakeholders from the organizing committee, French organizers released a statement on Wednesday that acknowledged “the existence of irreconcilable disagreements between president Edgar Grospiron and director general Cyril Linette.”

Jeers, cheers and pleas for peace kick off Milano Cortina 2026

The Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games, the 25th in the history of the Olympic movement, got underway in a delight of colour and style and celebration of music and Italian culture.

A total of 1,200 performers across four venues, headlined by Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli in Milan's La Scala of Football, San Siro, put on a performance as gloriously spectacular as anything that the city's famous Teatro alla Scala could claim to have produced.

The future of this grand old stadium is marked, the 99-year-old site of Italian glory and despair, is set to be replaced by 2032.

"The San Siro was always full of emotions," former AC Milan player and manager Fabio Capello said earlier this week.

Controversial French team winning gold is awful for figure skating, abuse survivors | Opinion

MILAN ― What an awful message the sport of figure skating just sent to sexual abuse survivors and victims, and parents who want their children to participate in a safe sport.

Figure skating just put Olympic gold medals around the necks of a French ice dance team that exists only because of the investigation and subsequent suspension of an alleged sexual abuser, Nikolaj Sorensen, who has been consistently and publicly supported by that team of Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron.

Fournier Beaudry, 33, who is Sorensen’s girlfriend, joined forces with Cizeron a year ago after Sorensen was banned for a minimum of six years for allegedly sexually assaulting a U.S. skater in 2012. His suspension was overturned last year but is being reviewed, meaning the ban could be put back into place. He was in the Olympic arena Wednesday night, and when the French team spotted him in the crowd, they joyously waved from the podium, and he whistled back.
