    Former US president Barack Obama has opened his presidential centre in Chicago. 

    All living US ex-presidents attended the opening ceremony alongside celebrities including Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey.

    Current President Donald Trump was not at the event, at which Mr Obama alluded to fears that US democracy is in danger.

    All living US ex-presidents, with the notable absence of current White House occupant Donald Trump, have joined a star-studded line-up for the opening of Barack Obama's presidential centre in Chicago.

    Mr Obama, 64, struck his trademark hopeful tone in a speech inaugurating the modernistic centre.

    Obama moved to tears by wife Michelle's speech at new presidential centre

    Former US President Barack Obama was visibly moved as his wife Michelle Obama saluted his work during the opening of the new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

    He appeared to wipe away a tear as his wife, the former first lady, hailed his achievements in office, including his efforts to expand healthcare and his attainment of a Nobel Peace Prize.

    The latter remark was widely interpreted as a jibe at his successor, Donald Trump, who has coveted the same accolade during his own time in office.

    Living former presidents Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Joe Biden attended the event but Trump, who has long feuded with the Obamas, was not invited.

    Peter Stevenson says moving to Thailand has allowed him to live more comfortably on his Australian Age Pension after struggling to cover rent and essentials in regional Victoria.

    Advocates say rising rents are pushing older Australians in the private rental market into poverty and that Commonwealth Rent Assistance is not keeping pace.

    There are calls for Rent Assistance to be indexed to changes in rents for the cheapest 25 per cent of homes in capital cities but the federal government argues it has already made big increases in the payment.

    They've got just one half-day session to record 32 minutes of music for the new James Bond video game, 007 First Light. And that means four hours of non-stop puffing and blowing.

    "It's mostly action music, so if you hate us by the end of it that's totally understandable," composer Alexis Smith warns the musicians as the day begins.

    Smith has been working on the score for the past two years with his co-writer Joe Henson (the son of Sherlock actress Una Stubbs).

    Today's the day it comes together, as 24 musicians breathe life into the music they penned in their cramped east London studio.

    We’re filing a lawsuit to dismantle their infrastructure, coordinating with the FBI who will be taking law enforcement actions, and will continue to work with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon to block these texts before they reach you. Litigation alone won’t end this. So Google is also advocating for federal legislation to make these protections permanent.

    Our civil lawsuit targets an organized cybercrime operation known as the "Outsider Enterprise." Based in China and coordinating through Telegram, this network distributes "phishing kits" that allow criminals to blast out fake text campaigns that look like they’re from Google and other trusted brands.

    It's not just mainstream software firms like Adobe and Microsoft that have pivoted to the "as-a-service" model in recent years. We're now seeing major cybercrime groups charge a monthly subscription for software platforms that can help their users steal money.

    Google is suing a major Chinese cybercrime operation, which it said facilitated scams targeting hundreds of thousands of victims, causing losses estimated in the millions.

    Roughly 9,000 fake websites and more than 1 million fraudulent URLs are allegedly connected to the group, as well as 55,000 spam texts flagged by Android users in just two weeks in May. The tech giant claims that the group, Outsider Enterprise, distributes phishing kits that enable criminals to run fake text-message campaigns impersonating well-known brands such as Google.

    Chinese cybercrime operation that used AI to scam 'hundreds of thousands of victims' sued by Google

    Google is suing to dismantle the infrastructure behind an alleged massive AI-powered cybercrime operation.

    On Friday, the tech giant announced a lawsuit against an alleged Chinese cybercrime network called Outsider Enterprise, which Google says uses AI in its campaigns to send scam text messages impersonating Google and other brands to steal passwords and credit card numbers. 

    Outsider Enterprise has financially scammed “hundreds of thousands of victims” with losses “estimated in the millions.” The group deployed 9,000 fake websites, one million fraudulent web domains, and 2.5 million texts sent to Android users in a two-week period, according to Google. 

    The company said, “55,000 spam texts were flagged by Android users in just two weeks this past May — that’s more than two text spam complaints a minute.”

    Rare and eccentric-looking goblin sharks have been seen alive in their deep ocean habitat for the first time ever.

    Prof Alan Jamieson, director of the Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Centre, said goblin sharks were a bit like the colossal squid – creatures with an almost mythological quality. They were almost never seen alive, he said, and previously only when they were accidentally hooked on a fishing line.

    “They’ve captured the imagination of so many people, but we’ve never really seen them alive,” he said. “We actually know virtually nothing about them.”

    Scientists have captured the first live footage of a goblin shark in its natural deep-ocean habitat, extending the species' known depth and geographic range and offering a rare glimpse of one of the ocean's most elusive predators.

    For most of its 125-million-year lineage, the goblin shark has remained almost entirely beyond human observation. Now, for the first time, scientists have captured live footage of the species in its natural deep-ocean habitat – sightings that have excited researchers for extending both its known depth range and its geographic footprint, significantly.

    Research published in the Journal of Fish Biology, led by the Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Centre and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, documents two separate live observations of Mitsukurina owstoni in the Central Pacific – one at a seamount near Jarvis Island, another on the slope of the Tonga Trench.

    Investor with 380 homes warns of price surge at bottom of market

    Continued high migration and recent tax reforms could fuel a boom in prices across the bottom end of the housing market, one of the country’s top property investors has claimed.

    Home prices in much of the country are currently falling, but Nathan Birch, a 41-year-old who owns just shy of 400 homes, said a different dynamic was playing out in the country’s cheapest areas.

    The founder of investment group B.Invested said competition in this market was heating up because of rampant demand from recent overseas arrivals who had recently got permanent residency.

    Western Australia recorded the strongest property value rise in the nation for the March quarter, according to new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

    The mean price for residential properties rose 7.2 per cent in WA and 2.5 per cent nationally, with the next strongest growth seen in Queensland, where values rose 4.6 per cent.

    Victoria was the only state or territory where values fell over the quarter, recording a decline of 0.3 per cent.

    “Growth in dwelling values moderated this quarter, following a strong rise in late 2025,” said Dr Mish Tan, the ABS’ head of finance statistics.

    “Despite this, the value of Australia’s dwelling stock is 11.9 per cent higher than a year ago, with increases in residential property prices continuing to drive growth.

    Adelaide has claimed an elusive top-eight scalp, defeating Geelong by one point in another Adelaide Oval heartstopper.
