Obama Center opening stirs pride and unease for Chicago’s South Side amid displacement fears
South Siders voice concerns about gentrification, housing and affordability as they celebrate opening of the Obama Presidential Center
Pastor Jeffery Campbell has deep ties to Chicagoâs Woodlawn neighborhood. He was raised in the South Side neighborhood, and has served as pastor at Woodlawn Baptist Church for 22 years.
And for the past decade, heâs attempted to protect its residents from displacement and gentrification. Heâs seen rising rents, residents squeezed by university development and life becoming more unaffordable. Now, thereâs a new challenge: the opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center â part of a 19-acre, $850m campus â that has transformed life in the neighborhood, as well as the adjacent South Shore and Hyde Park, long before this Fridayâs opening to the public.

Obama moved to tears by wife Michelle's speech at new presidential centre
Former US President Barack Obama was visibly moved as his wife Michelle Obama saluted his work during the opening of the new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
He appeared to wipe away a tear as his wife, the former first lady, hailed his achievements in office, including his efforts to expand healthcare and his attainment of a Nobel Peace Prize.
The latter remark was widely interpreted as a jibe at his successor, Donald Trump, who has coveted the same accolade during his own time in office.
Living former presidents Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Joe Biden attended the event but Trump, who has long feuded with the Obamas, was not invited.
