Woolies announces wild new bag coming to stores

Have you ever felt the urge to incorporate your favourite supermarket staple into your outfit? Well . . . now you can!

Australian supermarket giant Woolworths has revealed the quirky way they’re paying homage to one of their most-purchased products, with customers able to get their hands on the novelty tribute from next week.

Woolies’ Hot Roast Chickens — also known colloquially as ‘Bachelor’s Handbags’ — are a staple in Australian culture, with more than 20 million of the poultry bags being bought by Aussies every single year.

To honour the cult classic, the supermarket chain has revealed their latest product: a functional handbag make to look just like the beloved Bachelor’s Handbag.

Australia’s love of the ‘bachelor’s handbag’ has just been immortalised

Whether it’s being incorporated into other dishes or devoured limb-for-limb straight out of the bag, the supermarket hot chook has firmly embedded itself in Aussie eating habits.

Now, the ‘bachelor’s handbag’, as it’s affectionately known, has been immortalised in the form of an actual bag.

You can now carry around a ‘bachelor’s handbag’ without the risk of chicken juice spillage. Supplied/Woolworths

The limited-edition bag will be available at Woolworths, in store and online at select supermarkets and Metro stores, from Wednesday, October 14 while stocks last.

Selling at $10 a pop, the thermally insulated bags include a handle and detachable strap.

Aldi has been crowned Australia’s most affordable supermarket for healthy groceries in the latest price comparison by consumer advocacy group Choice.

The nationwide survey dispatched mystery shoppers across 104 locations including 27 Woolworths, Coles, and IGA stores, alongside 23 Aldi locations, to track the real-world cost of filling a basket with healthy staples.

To test how much a healthy diet costs, Choice surveyed two distinct sets of products.

These were a “base basket” of everyday essentials – apples, bananas, strawberries, potatoes, avocados, milk, basmati rice and beef mince – alongside a “spotlight health basket” packed with staples like baby spinach, broccoli, carrots, chicken breast, corn thins, Greek-style yoghurt, hummus, tinned chickpeas and rolled oats.

Shoppers have spoken: Woolies ditches its single-handle baskets

Woolworths has axed its controversial single-handle shopping baskets after receiving negative customer feedback, replacing them with a new two-handle design.

The now-defunct single-handle baskets were first introduced in stores across the country in 2025, offered alongside the original, smaller two-handle versions.

Nine.com.au spoke to shoppers to find out which basket they preferred after the single-handle baskets were slammed online.

“They strain my shoulders and aren’t great for walking balanced,” one said.

“Hate hate hate the big one-handle ones. Too awkward and I keep hitting myself in the hip,” added another.

Baskets will be returning to the previous two-handle design two years after Woolies made the leap to single-handle baskets.

The changes will roll out in all stores by September, but some customers will already be able to spot the change at certain stores.

The supermarket chain changed the baskets to single handles in December 2023, but the new design was poorly received by customers – who voiced criticism online.
