    Fair Work Commission makes 'historic' fuel order for truck drivers

    Companies like Coles, Woolworths and Amazon have been ordered to hold twice-monthly reviews of fuel prices with their outsourced truck drivers and transport companies, in a Fair Work Commission (FWC) order being described as "historic".

    The order is the first of its kind under new laws brought into help transport operators dealing with the soaring price of fuel, with their union saying "thousands" have been working at a loss.

    "Every corner of the economy will be touched by this," the Transport Workers' Union's national assistant secretary Emily McMillan says.

    Australia’s largest retailers, manufacturers and mining companies will be forced to pay truck drivers more to compensate for spiralling fuel costs after the Fair Work Commission issued a landmark order that could add further pressure to inflation.

    Truckies and their bosses, represented by the Transport Workers’ Union and the Australian Road Transport Industrial Organisation, had been pleading for action after weeks of absorbing soaring diesel prices because their contracts had been signed before war broke out in the Middle East.

    The commission ruled that, from Tuesday, companies at the top of the supply chain will have to conduct fortnightly fuel price reviews and factor rising fuel prices into contracts they’ve already signed to transport their goods.

    Fair Work Commission abolishes junior pay rates for young adult employees

    Companies that rely on young staff have been fighting to keep paying 18 to 20-year-olds less money. (ABC News: Sam Ikin)

    Young adults working in retail, fast food and pharmacies are set to receive a pay rise, after a decision by the Fair Work Commission described as "up there with the introduction of equal pay for women in the 1970s".

    The commission moved to abolish junior pay rates for young adult employees while maintaining them for minors, but the staged changes won't come into effect until December.

    Hearing from more than 80 witnesses across the three industries, it determined that employees aged 18 to 20 should no longer be subject to "discounted" junior rates.

    Half a million young Australians working in the retail, fast food and pharmacy sectors are set for a wage increase after the Fair Work Commission abolished junior pay rates for those aged 18 and over.

    The wage rises will be phased in over four years in a landmark change that unions compared to the introduction of equal pay for women in the 1970s.

    Under the relevant awards, those aged 20 are paid 90% of the adult rate, while 19 year-olds are paid 80% and 18 year-olds 70%.

    A 35-year-old New Jersey woman has been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of her two little boys, ages 5 and 7, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

    According to investigators, Hillsborough police got a 911 call at a Shell Court home around dinnertime Tuesday. It came from a man, who told them he found his kids unconscious when he got home from work that day.

    He also reported that his wife had done something to them.

    Officers responding to that call found both the man and his wife, Priyatharsini Natarajan. The two children were found dead in a bedroom. Prosecutors say their investigation found Natarajan allegedly caused the death of her boys, though it wasn't clear how they died. Their identities haven't been released.

    Hillsborough, NJ mother arrested in deaths of 2 sons, ages 5 and 7

    HILLSBOROUGH, New Jersey (WABC) — Two young boys were found dead inside their New Jersey home and now their mother is under arrest.

    Authorities say the children's father called 911 around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday after coming home from work and finding his two sons unconscious. He told dispatchers that his wife had done something to them.

    When officers arrived, they found the father and his wife, 35-year-old Priyatharsini Natarajan, inside the Hillsborough home.

    Emergency crews tried to save them, but it was too late. Both children were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released.

    Investigators say Natarajan caused the deaths of her children earlier that day. She was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
