Tell us: has the new Wuthering Heights film adaptation inspired you to read Emily Brontë’s novel?

We want to hear people’s thoughts on reading the novel ahead of the new adaptation – and if you’ve watched the film how does it compare?

Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights came to theatres worldwide on 13 February, with the director Emerald Fennell saying she hopes it will “provoke a sort of primal response.”

But Brontë’s tempestuous 1847 novel itself has been described as too extreme for the screen and on its release it was certainly not interpreted as a love story. “I can’t adapt the book as it is but I can approximate the way it made me feel,” Fennell has said.

As someone who still spends too much time on the internet even though every day it descends into a previously unknown circle of hell, I have been seeing a whole lot of discourse about Emerald Fennell’s upcoming film adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.

As always, there are people who hate the idea of any classic book being adapted into the disgusting medium of moving pictures. The trailer has been criticised for appearing overly erotic, detracting from the book’s themes of class and violence. There are, of course, other people thrilled at the idea of an overly erotic movie. There are those who are excited about what updated concepts Fennell will depict, and what her strong visual style will bring to the story.

Wuthering Heights to The Odyssey: 16 of the most exciting films coming up in 2026

From Emerald Fennell's divisive new adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights to Christopher Nolan's wildly anticipated ancient Greek epic, here are BBC critics' picks of the films to see in the year ahead.

Emerald Fennell's bold take on Emily Brontë's 1847 novel is already one of the year's most divisive films. The trailer alone evoked both fascinated anticipation and pearl-clutching resistance. On social media, Brontë purists have objected to everything from the film's raw sexiness to its casting, complaining that Margot Robbie is too old to play the teenage Cathy and Jacob Elordi too white to play Heathcliff, described in the book as "dark-skinned". But Fennell, who proved herself to be a daring original with Promising Young Woman and Saltburn, knew she was taking an iconoclastic approach. "I wanted to make something that was the book that I experienced when I was 14," she has said, describing it as "primal, sexual". Her version of those two doomed, passionate lovers is also stylised, with bright-red costumes and red-orange skies. Owen Cooper of Adolescence plays the young Heathcliff and Hong Chau is Cathy's loyal maid, Nelly. And if you don't feel like channelling your inner teenage girl, the year brings a more traditional adaptation of a 19th-Century classic, Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Elinor Dashwood in the story of marriageable sisters and their pursuit of love. (CJ)

Surprises, franchises and sequels: 10 new films that prove cinema is not dead

If you listen to the people in the know, they will tell you how bad things are in the movie business. Movies are doomed. Streaming has won. The weird thing is, 2025 felt like a very busy year at the movies. And the 2026 film calendar is already jam packed with big-ticket titles.

To be fair, it is dominated by franchises, sequels and safe bets. A little bit of tension in the economy, and everyone gets risk-averse. But if you thought the movie biz was now all about Netflix and its made-for-television library, then you might be surprised how often you’re going to be down at your local cinema this year.
