Breaking: Missing 85-year-old man found alive after crash

Harrietville man Jacobus Bakkum, 85, has been found alive after going missing on Sunday.

Police say Mr Bakkum's car crashed down an embankment on the Omeo Highway at Mitta Mitta sometime in the past two days.

An 85-year-old man missing in Victoria's High Country since Sunday night has been found alive.

Jacobus "John" Bakkum was last seen leaving the Harrietville Hotel, south-east of Mount Buffalo, shortly after 8pm on Sunday.

He had been having dinner with his wife, who walked home as part of their regular routine.

But instead of driving the 500 metres directly home, it is believed Mr Bakkum drove in the opposite direction along the Great Alpine Road, through Hotham Heights.

An 85-year-old man has vanished in a baffling mystery after leaving a pub with his wife and never arriving home.

John Backham left the Harrietville Hotel, in Victoria’s High Country, with his wife at 8pm Sunday night following their regular weekly meal at the venue.

His wife usually walks the 500m home while he drives, but while she arrived at their house a short time later, her husband never did.

Backham was driving the couple’s 2007 silver Toyota Prado with registration WBD 077.

His car was spotted on the Great Alpine Rd near Dinner Plain just after 9pm. Forty-five minutes later, it was seen in Omeo, about 85km from his home.

An elderly Victorian man who went missing after a night out has been found after his vehicle was involved in a single-vehicle crash 150 kilometres from his intended destination.

A missing Victorian man has been found after his vehicle was involved in a single-vehicle crash at Mitta Mitta in Victoria’s north-east, 150 kilometres from his intended destination.

Jacobus Bakkum, also known as John, was reported missing after he failed to arrive home after leaving the Harrietville Hotel just after 8pm on Sunday.

He was located at 11.30am on Tuesday by a passerby who noticed his vehicle down an embankment just off the Omeo Highway.

Brandon Relph, who founded his first company aged 13, and has been praised by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, has joined the BBC’s strategy team to help counter the existential threat of falling audiences among young people.

This is far from a new issue. The Financial Review highlighted it almost a decade ago in “Angus Raine calls for stamp duty break to encourage empty-nesters to downsize”. Then, I argued that stamp duty relief for downsizers aged over 70 would encourage housing turnover and improve affordability. Nearly a decade later, the case is even stronger.

Sydney eastern suburbs retiree Michael Grant and his wife live in a five-bedroom house worth about $3 million. They would downsize their living but for one big problem: a $150,000 stamp duty bill.

Should we bribe the NIMBYs?

Everyone hates luxury development. But we need fancy new apartment buildings to fix the housing crisis: When rich people can move into new units, then non-rich people can move into the older homes that the rich move out of.1

Despite the truth of this, voters just do not believe that more building alone will make housing more affordable. And many politicians want the least fortunate Americans to see more obvious benefits from homebuilding.

One solution is to force developers of fancy new apartment buildings to set aside some of those homes for low- or moderate-income people. This policy is called inclusionary zoning.

Police investigate stabbing of 15-year-old in Melbourne's south-east

Police are investigating after a high school student was stabbed in Melbourne's south-east on Monday afternoon.

A 15-year-old boy was found with serious injuries after an altercation between a group of teenagers, Victoria Police said.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics responded to reports of an incident in Cranbourne North at around 3:20pm, where they treated one patient.

"A teenage boy was transported by road ambulance to hospital with upper body injuries in a serious condition," a spokesperson said.

Police said the group of teenagers fled the scene on foot.

The Department of Education said the injured teenager was a student of Alkira Secondary College but that the assault took place "outside the school and after school hours".

Teenage student hospitalised after stabbing attack near school

A teenage boy has been hospitalised with serious injuries after being attacked by a group of youths after school in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs on Monday.

Police said three boys were walking home near Cranbourne North’s Alkira Secondary College at 3.20pm when they turned around and saw three hooded youths, aged between 16 and 20, charging at them with a “variety” of weapons including “knives” and “swords”.

Detective Inspector Mark Patrick said the three offenders, who remain on the run, let out a collective scream before attacking in Sabel Drive.

“It was similar to a war cry when you go into battle … it appeared to be to get [the victims’] attention to create fear,” he told a press conference.

A bump to minimum wage, a change to how often superannuation is paid and more paid parental leave days are among the changes coming into effect on 1 July.

The end of financial year is typically when state and federal governments introduce a range of new policies. So whatâs new and who will be affected?

About 2.8 million Australians on award and minimum wages will get a pay increase of 4.75%. The lowest-paid workers â about 100,000 people who are on minimum pay and entry-level rates â will receive a 5.97% bump.
