    122-year-old yacht built in UK brewery chasing win as it races Brisbane to Gladstone

    The Maritimo Katwinchar is looking to make history as the oldest boat to compete in the race at 122 years old.

    Favourable weather conditions mean the first boats could come into Gladstone early Saturday morning.

    The skipper of a yacht built in a London brewery 122 years ago is chasing glory as he launches into what could be the boat's final race before entering a museum.

    The Maritimo Katwinchar is among 29 taking part in the 78th annual Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race today, with a race briefing starting at Moreton Bay from 10am.

    Fleet confirmed for the 78th Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race

    The fleet is confirmed for the 78th Gladstone Ports Corporation Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, set to start tomorrow on Good Friday, 3 April 2026.

    The 308 nautical mile offshore passage from Brisbane to Gladstone remains one of the most respected challenges in Australian sailing, drawing experienced offshore crews as well as emerging teams stepping up to test themselves along the Queensland coast.

    This year’s fleet includes Rolex Sydney to Hobart veterans Wild Thing 100, Maritimo Katwincher, a beautifully restored 120 year old vessel, and V5 from New Zealand. It is a strong line up that should deliver plenty of action and great vision at the start.

    The former NBC Late Night and Tonight Show and TBS Conan host ended his late night run in 2021, shifting his focus to his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. He was early to the video podcast game there, too, pulling clips when many other top shows were still audio-only, and clips from his HBO travelogue Conan O’Brien Must Go also travel well on social media.

    One such hidden gem is a 23-year-old mystery movie that failed to connect with audiences upon release, despite starring both Gibson and Downey. The two actors first shared the screen in 1990's Air America, an action-comedy about pilots caught up in a CIA operation. Gibson and Downey reunited in 2003 for another co-starring gig, which was a decidedly different type of project, being a bizarre mix of genres that made it a tough sell for many viewers. Yet it's the type of movie that features the two actors in ways audiences have never seen them before, presenting a hidden gem for shock value alone.

    An eight-year-old girl from the Gold Coast has died in a suspected snowmobile accident while on holiday with family overseas.

    Japanese media reported Chloe Jeffries was killed shortly before midday on Saturday after a snowmobile she and her mother were riding overturned near the ski resort town of Hakuba, north-west of Tokyo.

    Jeffries suffered head wounds and was airlifted to Matsumoto City, in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture, but succumbed to her injuries, local media reported.

    Jeffries, who lived with her family on the northern tip of the Gold Coast, was a junior in the South Coast Netball Association at Palm Beach.

    One New Zealand Warriors co-captain Mitchell Barnett will return to Australia at the end of the season for personal reasons.

    Warriors CEO Cameron George today announced the 31-year-old Kangaroos and New South Wales front rower will be released from the final year of his contract.

    “We’re very sad to see this happen but Mitch and his family need to be back home,” he said.

    “He has become such a big part of our club. We love having him here and we know how much he loves it, too, but it’s important he, Clare and their boys are back around their family support network."

    The Warriors have dropped a bombshell with skipper Mitch Barnett released from the final year of his deal to return to Australia for personal reasons.

    Barnett, who is returning from an ACL injury that rubbed him out of most of last year, was contracted for 2027, but will now return to Australia at the end of the 2026 season, which will be his last in Warriors colours.

    Broncos linked with State of Origin star after early release from rival NRL club

    The Broncos, Titans and Knights have been floated as the most likely destination for Mitch Barnett after the State of Origin forward was granted an early release from his contract with the Warriors. Barnett announced on Tuesday that he'll head back to Australia at the end of the 2026 for family reasons.

    The 31-year-old started his career in Canberra, before playing 126 games for Newcastle. He moved to New Zealand to play for the Warriors in 2023, and was contracted until the end of 2027.

    But he's been granted a release from the final year of his deal and will return to Australia in 2027. Barnett, who has played two Origin games for the Blues, said he wants to be closer to family on the NSW north coast due to his child's ongoing medical needs.
