Why New Zealand’s tour of South Africa could reshape modern rugby

In the short, sharp world of modern rugby, New Zealand and South Africa have ripped up the form book: the long, old-school tour is back.

The normal All Black schedule of hotel, gym and stadium, with the odd coffee shop visit thrown in, has been swapped for more than five weeks of rambling relatively slowly across South Africa.

Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour is already rolling in South Africa, with three out of the four midweek games played by New Zealand against provincial teams, before four Tests, including a money-spinning final game at the home of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens in the United States. The tour will return to New Zealand in 2030 and is changing modern rugby.

A majority Māori and Pacific All Blacks squad shows how far rugby’s ‘greatest rivalry’ has come

This weekend’s first test between the New Zealand All Blacks and South African Springboks will be played 105 years after the two nations first began the “greatest rivalry” in rugby in 1921.

A great deal has changed in that time, including the composition of All Blacks teams and the players’ eligibility to tour the formerly apartheid republic.

In 2026, well over half the squad of 44 have Māori or Pacific ethnic backgrounds.

That would have been impossible 66 years ago when the 1960 All Blacks team toured South Africa. In fact, only 18 of the current squad would have been able to travel back then.

Greatest Rivalry tour: New Zealand in South Africa is rugby's next chapter

New Zealand are unbeaten in the warm-up games on their tour of South Africa

That is what separated South Africa and New Zealand in the 2023 Rugby World Cup final, as the Springboks went back-to-back to become the first nation to win the tournament four times.

Rassie Erasmus' world champions sit top of the rankings and have also won back-to-back Rugby Championships. They are indisputably the game's dominant force.

Their predecessors as rugby union's supreme team were the All Blacks, who won their own back-to-back World Cups, in 2011 and 2015.

The landscape may have changed and their roles may have reversed of late, but they remain the game's most glamourous and marketable teams.

Ravindra puts New Zealand in dominant position after England fail to take advantage

Things can change quickly in cricket. Just as England thought a reset had occurred with the win at Lord’s, only for a late night in Chelsea and defeat at the Oval to put paid to that notion, so the nature of the pitch lurched significantly on a gripping third day here.

Gone was the road on which the ball repeatedly raced across the parched outfield during the first two days and in its place – influenced by a slight drop in temperature and cloud cover – was a more capricious strip of earth. It offered lateral movement and inconsistent bounce, and led to 11 wickets falling.

Poms in deep strife as Kiwis mount fightback after Archer’s frightening blitz

Rachin Ravindra’s unbeaten fifty revived New Zealand after Jofra Archer’s double strike gave England renewed hope of victory in the third and deciding Test at Trent Bridge on Saturday.

New Zealand, with the three-match series up for grabs at 1-1, were faltering at 2-12 in their second innings following fast bowler Archer’s two wickets after tea on the third day.

But at stumps they had recovered to 3-120, a significant overall lead of 204 runs, with a previously good pitch now showing signs of uneven bounce after being ‘baked’ for three days in soaring heat.

83rd over: New Zealand 354-2 (Nicholls 29, Ravindra 7) Archer moves round the wicket and forces Nicholls to play at a series of fullish, straight deliveries. Eventually Nicholls guides one into the off side for a single; that’s the only run in the last 17 balls, which supports the view that New Zealand have shut up shop for a night.

If either batter gets out before the close, they’ll be filthy. There are still hundreds of runs out there for New Zealand.

82nd over: New Zealand 353-2 (Nicholls 28, Ravindra 7) A maiden from Atkinson to Ravindra, who looks happy to play for the close and then try to fill his boots tomorrow.

England have made four changes for their series decider against New Zealand but Ollie Robinson has been overlooked.

There were five changes and three debutants as they crashed to a 253-run defeat at The Oval last week, with Robinson the only one of the absent quintet not returning despite his player-of-the-match showing in the first Test.

17th over: New Zealand 60-0 (Latham 34, Conway 23) Four singles from this latest Bashir over, and he’s doing an OK job of keeping it tight.

“Positively imperial,” says Jim Frayling of Stokes’ new barnet. ‘Some might say Augustine, or indeed Octavian. It’ll be interesting to see if he goes on to destroy the triumvirate regime managing England men’s cricket. Et tu Bob?”

16th over: New Zealand 56-0 (Latham 32, Conway 21) I wonder what kind of exhibition masochism Ben Stokes will treat us to today; I imagine he’ll wait until NZ have more runs and it’s even hotter, but I reckon nine overs into the heat. Tongue goes around to Latham, and it occurs to me that the Barmy Army trumpeter needs to learn the below – from an album I was disappointed to discover contained only four bangers. Goodness me, I’d take that now. Anyhow, five more dots are followed by a Latham drive for two, during which time we learn Stokes is warming up.

Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson retires from international cricket

'I knew it was the right time' – Williamson on retirement

New Zealand legend Kane Williamson has retired from all international cricket with immediate effect.

The 35-year-old featured in the first Test against England at Lord's, registering a duck and 18, but will play no further part in the three-match series, which will resume at The Oval on 17 June.

Williamson retires as New Zealand's leading all-format run-scorer, with 19,346 runs, including 48 centuries and six double hundreds, in 378 appearances between 2010 and 2026.

As the Black Caps' most prolific Test batter, he scored 9,515 runs at an average of 54.06, including 33 centuries, in 110 matches.

Williamson captained New Zealand on 206 occasions between 2012 and 2024, leading the side through a golden period when they won the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021 and reached the finals of the 2019 World Cup and 2021 T20 World Cup.

‘It’s become clear’: Retirement bombshell as cricket legend quits mid Test series

New Zealand’s most prolific run-scorer and arguably greatest-ever batsman Kane Williamson announced his immediate retirement from international cricket on Friday.

The 35-year-old former skipper announced his exit ahead of the second Test against England at The Oval next week.

He played in the Black Caps’ defeat in the first Test at Lord’s, making 0 and 18.

    A success for Afghan women’s football | D+C – Development + Cooperation

FIFA, world football’s governing body, hasn’t exactly shown itself to be the most ardent defender of human rights in recent past. When it decided in April to recognise a team of refugee Afghan women as their country’s official national team, however, the association did nonetheless set a precedent: for the first time, it has given its seal of approval to a national squad without the consent of the member association in question.

“A hard slap to the face of the Taliban” is how national goalkeeper Elaha Safdari described the decision in an interview with Deutsche Welle. Her team had already taken part in a minor tournament in Morocco during the FIFA United Women’s Series in 2025 – as they had not yet been fully recognised as a national team, however, they competed under the name “Afghan Women United”. But now the team has the chance to qualify for major tournaments such as the World Cup, the Asian Cup or the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

New Zealand captain Tom Latham opted to bat first against Bangladesh in the first ODI of their three-match series in Dhaka on Friday morning.

There was a delay in the toss because Bangladesh coach Phil Simmons had to pass on a changed team sheet to captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz. This was later revealed to be Mustafizur Rahman being replaced by Shoriful Islam. It later emerged that the last-minute change was because Mustafizur had picked up a knee injury.

That meant a three-pronged fast-bowling attack of Taskin Ahmed, Nahid Rana and Shoriful.

Spreading the net: Why and how New Zealand have 53 cricketers playing in Asia this summer

Somewhat unnoticed, New Zealand will have 53 men's cricketers involved in various competitions in Asia across April and May.

In these two months, four different competitions – one each in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh – are taking place in Asia that will feature cricketers from New Zealand:

Ahead of the start of the Bangladesh series, New Zealand head coach Rob Walter spoke about this being part of a conscious effort from New Zealand Cricket: "If you send out entire team to Sri Lanka, and then bring them here (Bangladesh), you've missed out an opportunity to give 12 other players the opportunity to develop their skills in Sri Lanka.
