Zverev earns second shot at Roland-Garros title as Italian scores free pass to final

Germany’s perennial tennis bridesmaid Alexander Zverev will get another shot at a maiden grand slam title in this year’s Roland-Garros final.

The world No.3 – the only top-five player in the men’s or women’s draw to reach the semi-finals – progressed to his fourth major final, and second in Paris, with a 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Czechia’s marathon man Jakub Mensik across three-plus hours.

Zverev will face 10th seed Flavio Cobolli in the final after fellow Italian Matteo Arnaldi withdrew before their semi-final with a viral illness. It will be Cobolli’s first grand slam final.

‘I almost cried’: Virus ruins grand slam dream as shock withdrawal decides French Open final

Alexander Zverev moved to the verge of a long-awaited first Grand Slam title as the second seed saw off Jakub Mensik in four sets on Friday to set up a French Open final against Flavio Cobolli.

The German will face 10th-seed Cobolli on Sunday after securing a 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Mensik.

Cobolli did not even have to play his first Grand Slam semi-final, as his last-four opponent and fellow Italian Matteo Arnaldi withdrew from the tournament shortly before the match due to illness.

Zverev: This is Worst Court I’ve Ever Played On

Alexander Zverev has faced the best and asserts Rome is the absolute worst.

A disconsolate Zverev failed to convert four match points in the tiebreaker suffering a brutal 6-1, 6-7(10), 0-6 loss to Italian Luciano Darderi in a Rome shocker on BNP Paribas Arena Court.

After enduring that painful collapse, Zverev nuked Rome’s red clay as “the worst court I’ve ever played on.”

Asked about the windy conditions, Zverev took aim at what he suggests are shoddy court conditions creating bad bounces.

“It was difficult to play. I mean, to be honest, the court, I think this is the worstcourt I’ve ever played on,” Zverev said. “Juniors, professional, futures, practice, I never played on a court where the court quality is that bad.

ATP Munich Best Bets Including Alexander Zverev vs Miomir Kecmanovic

The ATP 500 Munich Round of 16 on April 14 features a mix of clear favourites and potential value plays. While Luciano Darderi and Alexander Zverev are expected to progress, recent form and conditions could make their matches more competitive, with underdogs like Miomir Kecmanovic and Alex Molcan capable of keeping things close.

Zhizhen Zhang has lost four of his last five matches. The last match he played was in Houston, where he lost to Shelton in the second round.

Luciano Darderi has lost three of his last five matches. Last week in Monte Carlo, Darderi lost to Hurkacz in the opening round in three sets. Last season in Munich, the Italian lost to Shelton in the quarterfinals in straight sets.

Zverev vs. Garin Odds & Predictions (Apr. 8, 2026)

Third seed Alexander Zverev holds strong trader consensus favoritism over qualifier Cristian Garin in their Monte Carlo Masters second-round clash on clay, driven by his world No. 3 ranking, consistent Masters 1000 deep runs, and recent Roland Garros final appearance highlighting elite clay form. Garin, ranked No. 109, enters with fresh momentum from a dominant 6-2, 6-4 upset of Matteo Arnaldi in the first round, showcasing his heavy topspin grinding suited to the slow Monte Carlo courts. Their head-to-head stands at 2-1 for Garin on clay—including a straight-sets quarterfinal win over Zverev in Munich last year—adding upset potential, though Zverev's baseline power and serve typically prevail in high-stakes ATP 1000 encounters absent injury concerns.

What just happened to Alexander Zverev in Monte-Carlo shocked fans

Alexander Zverev turned himself into the kind of player who could win high-end (but not Grand Slams) tournaments a long time ago. No matter the surface, he could be dangerous. Still, his best surface statistically has been clay, which is why his second-round match at the Monte-Carlo Masters was so shocking.

Facing Cristian Garin, a former No. 17 on the ATP tour but currently ranked outside the top 100, the German dropped the first set 6-4, which clearly wasn't the end of the match. Sets are lost all the time, of course, and when Zverev, the three-seed in Monte-Carlo, came back to win set two, all seemed right again.

Why Alexander Zverev thinks his preparation for the Monte-Carlo Masters could work in his favour

Alexander Zverev heads into Monte Carlo with plenty of reason to feel good about his game after a steady start to the season.

But this upcoming stretch could be pivotal if he wants to take the next step and finally break through at Grand Slam level.

Zverev has had a remarkable career, but there’s still one major milestone left to cross off: a Grand Slam title. He’s got every reason to believe Roland Garros gives him the best shot at getting it done.

His build-up hasn’t gone as planned, though. Despite that, Zverev believes the lack of preparation could actually work in his favour.

Alexander Zverev pinpoints issues vs Carlos Alcaraz in Australian Open semi-finals

Alexander Zverev is back in action this week, stepping into the Mexican Open for his first tournament since a tough loss at the Australian Open semi-finals.

The German fell to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets, coming just short of reaching the final.

After dropping the first two sets, Zverev battled back to force a fifth and even found himself just one game away from closing out the match.

But Alcaraz, dealing with cramps earlier on, dug deep to break back and eventually secure his place in history as the youngest player ever to complete the career Grand Slam.

Now getting ready for Acapulco, Zverev spoke about how he felt about that semi-final match in Australia.

Last night Naomi Osaka apologised for her “disrespectful” on-court interview following her second-round victory over Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, where the two had a heated exchange at the net after the match.

Cirstea appeared to have been annoyed with Osaka pumping herself up and yelling “C’mon” between first and second serves.
