An injured star QB could play soon. Does that mean it's worth it?

The game’s outcome had effectively been determined when star Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels trotted out for another possession with 12 minutes remaining on Nov. 2.

Down 31 points to Seattle, Washington chose to keep Daniels, last season’s NFL offensive rookie of the year and the franchise’s cornerstone, in the game rather than sit him to avoid the risk of injury. Ten plays later, Daniels fell awkwardly on the elbow of his left, nonthrowing arm, dislocating it.

The drumbeat began as soon as Daniels started writhing on the turf. Sure, he was healthy. But why was he still in the game?

What happened to Jayden Daniels? Injury update, return timeline for Commanders QB

Follow along with USA TODAY Sports' live coverage of the Commanders vs. Broncos game on "Sunday Night Football."

As the Washington Commanders and Denver Broncos begin their Week 13 "Sunday Night Football" game to close out November football, one player is conspicuously missing.

What happened to Jayden Daniels? And when could the Commanders' quarterback return?

Daniels sustained a dislocated left elbow injury in the final moments of Washington's Week 9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Despite the gruesome appearance of the injury when it happened, the Commanders quarterback managed to avoid any fracturing or ligament damage in his elbow. That meant Daniels may have a chance to return in 2025 rather than ending his season early.

Commanders shift focus to future health of Jayden Daniels

The Washington Commanders are in a tough spot, and so is their quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Daniels has battled multiple injuries this season, missing several games in what was supposed to be his full breakout year.

With the team’s playoff hopes hanging by a thread, the focus has shifted from pushing for wins to protecting their franchise quarterback for the long-term future.

Daniels was ruled out for Sunday's game vs the Denver Broncos as he needs more time to be ready for action.Daniels' athleticism and willingness to create outside the pocket is a big part of what makes him dangerous, but it has also opened the door to significant punishment. After suffering a knee sprain/hamsting and a hamstring injury earlier this season and an elbow dislocation, the Commanders know they cannot afford to keep losing their most important player to avoidable hits.
