Gwyneth Paltrow quit acting because of 'burnout.' Now she's back

In Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme” (in New York and Los Angeles Dec. 19, in theaters nationwide Christmas Day), the A-lister is both arresting and heart-rending as the fictional fading movie star Kay Stone, who feels revitalized by a passionate fling with manic ping-pong upstart Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet).

It’s Paltrow’s first dramatic role since 2010’s “Country Strong.” In the 15 years since, the Oscar winner has continued to expand her wellness and lifestyle empire Goop, making a smattering of screen appearances in TV comedies “Glee” and “The Politician,” as well as playing Pepper Potts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Gwyneth Paltrow says mom-group chats blew up after kiss with Timothée Chalamet

Gwyneth Paltrow credits her big screen return in "Marty Supreme" to the "confluence of events" between its talented filmmaker Josh Safdie, co-star Timothée Chalamet, and finally being an empty nester at home.

Paltrow joined "Good Morning America" on Monday ahead of the film's debut on Dec. 25, and said that throughout her career, she has "tried to work with really interesting filmmakers" from Wes Anderson to Paul Thomas Anderson — and now Safdie.

"And also my kids — it was like, empty nest," she continued, speaking to her motivation to return to the screen after a multi-year acting hiatus. "And I thought, 'Why not try?' … And I thought it would be fun to go to New York and get back into it, and I'm so glad I did, because I had the best time."

“Who knew that there could be a whole movie about ping pong?”

Indeed. And yet that’s what brought Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow back to acting, in a role tailored for her by director Josh Safdie. In his critically acclaimed new feature Marty Supreme, she stars opposite Timothée Chalamet as Kay Stone, a fading movie star who lets herself get seduced by Chalamet’s scheming Marty Mauser, just because he relishes yet another challenge. She rebuffs his attempts at first, but soon gets drawn in by his relentless pursuit, while she’s attempting a stage comeback of her own, financed by her wealthy husband (Kevin O’Leary).
