If he never returns, Terence Crawford’s legacy as one of boxing’s greats is secure | Bryan Armen Graham

The ring’s standout problem-solver steps away from ‘competition’ on his own terms and with an unblemished record across five divisions

Terence “Bud” Crawford has always fought like a man who wanted to leave no room for argument. Not simply to win, but to win so cleanly that dissent collapses on contact. So his retirement announcement on Tuesday didn’t feel like a sudden fade-out so much as the closing of a file: tidy, decisive, signed in his own hand. Three months after scaling two weight divisions to outclass Canelo Álvarez in Las Vegas and become the undisputed super-middleweight champion, Crawford says he is stepping away “on his own terms”. In the cruellest sport, that is rarer than a perfect record.

Undefeated, five-division world champion Terence Crawford has announced his retirement at 38.

Crawford is fresh off a remarkable victory over Canelo Alvarez in September and retires with a 42-0 record.

The American has not closed the door on a potential return but says he is "walking away with nothing else to prove".

Legendary American boxer Terence Crawford has announced his immediate retirement from the sport at age 38.

Crawford, a world champion in five different weight divisions, hangs up the gloves with a perfect 42-0 record.

His last fight was one of his best, as Crawford became the undisputed super middleweight champion courtesy of a brilliant unanimous decision victory over Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in September.

When Jake Paul's fight with Gervonta "Tank" Davis was canceled after the WBA lightweight champion's latest legal issues surfaced, the social media influencer-turned-boxer was determined to secure a new opponent before the end of 2025.

Several potential opponents were reportedly in play, but Paul landed on a fight with former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, and the two will meet Friday at Kaseya Center in Miami, live on Netflix.

"I didn't expect the fight with Joshua to happen this year," Paul told ESPN about his selection process. "But the plan was always to fight Gervonta Davis and then Anthony Joshua, so we bumped it up ahead of schedule."
