Ødegaard’s strike and Rice’s flexibility steer Arsenal past Brighton and back to top

A few minutes before half-time in a contest that swung entirely one way and then briefly the other, Brighton & Hove Albion threatened what was then a rare foray into Arsenal territory.

For the briefest of moments, the visitors seemed certain to muster their first shot of an afternoon that had hitherto been miserable. But, no sooner had Maxim De Cuyper received the ball on the counterattack and glanced up, than the Belgian was flattened by a crunching Declan Rice tackle that hastily restored possession for the hosts. De Cuyper slumped, while Rice towered over him and roared; arguably this season’s standout Premier League midfielder making light of playing right-back for the first time in his Arsenal career.

How to watch the Premier League match between Arsenal and Brighton, as well as kick-off time and team news.

Premier League leaders Arsenal return home to face Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.

Arsenal are treading a fine line between champions' luck and a side scraping results recently. Their past three games haven't been convincing by any stretch of imagination.  The Gunners can be given the benefit of the doubt in their most recent Carabao Cup outing. Mikel Arteta rotated his entire lineup as they dominated Crystal Palace. But it did take an owngoal to open the scoring, and the game went to penalties anyway. Kepa Arrizabalaga stepped up to send them through to the semis. However, the concerning stat for Arsenal is that they haven't scored from open play in three games. The wins against Wolves and Everton were extremely close as Arteta is managing minutes and injuries. They might most probably start the game in second place if Manchester City win their game on Saturday and have to reclaim their top spot for a second week running.

Arsenal 2-1 Brighton: Gunners survive late scare to reclaim top spot after double injury setback

Arsenal overcame further obstacles to reclaim top spot in the Premier League after beating Brighton on Saturday.

Prior to kick-off at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners had dropped to second in the table after Manchester City beat Nottingham Forest in the lunchtime fixture.

Jurrien Timber did not make the matchday squad after picking up a knock late on against Crystal Palace earlier in the week and then Riccardo Calafiori was forced to withdraw from the starting lineup.

Despite this, Martin Odegaard’s first half strike and an own goal from Georginio Rutter ultimately proved to be the difference as Arsenal survived a late scare when Diego Gomez pulled one back for Brighton.
