When reports started to emerge that Timothée Chalamet was going to play a ping pong champion in a film called Marty Supreme, the world (including this correspondent) rolled its eyes. Was Hollywood’s most annoying actor going to go for broke in what promised to be the most irritating film of all time? Well I am here to hold up my hand and say that first impressions couldn’t have been more wrong. Marty Supreme is one of the most exciting, indeed sensational films of the year, and if the Guardian film critics’ poll wasn’t a democracy, many of us would made it No 1 by some distance.

Timothée Chalamet Makes a Final Push for ‘Marty Supreme’: ‘This Is the One, Man’

We’re only a week away from Marty Supreme and Timothée Chalamet is continuing to go hard with his over-the-top promotional push for the film. Last night, the actor appeared on The Tonight Show to discuss the movie and to play beer pong with host Jimmy Fallon.

“I think [this is] one of the best marketing campaigns of any film I’ve ever seen,” Fallon noted. “You’ve done a fantastic job with this movie.”

“Ultimately, this is an original film, Marty Supreme,” Chalamet explained. “It’s an independent A24 film. I know people rag on the budget size. But this is the easiest sell for me to come here. I’m trying to talk straight into America right here.”

With Marty Supreme Josh Safdie Gives Us Another Movie by and for Insecure Men

Watching Marty Supreme reminded me of a time I was invited to watch a trio of shorts written, filmed, and edited by a group of teenagers in a summer film workshop. The first short quickly set up its protagonist as a loser, shunned by his peers, until he proved them wrong, and ended the story surrounded by a group of girls (played by all the girls at film camp) looking at him adoringly. In each subsequent film, the exact thing happened. Only the guy playing the protagonist changed.

Asked how all the teams independently came up with the same exact plot, a girl from the camp replied cheerfully—”We just did what the boys wanted.”
