The first full length trailer for Alejandro González Iñárrituâs hotly anticipated comedy-drama Digger has been released, and with it audiencesâ first look at Tom Cruiseâs least recognisable role since he donned a fatsuit and prosthetics for 2008âs Tropic Thunder.
The film will be released worldwide in early October and stars Cruise as Digger Rockwell, âthe most powerful man in the worldâ on a mission to save the world from an ecological disaster.
Ahead of the trailerâs launch, Cruise recently spoke to press and fans at an event the Warner Bros launch in Los Angeles, saying that it was unlike any project he had worked on before.

Tom Cruise had to dig deep for his latest starring role — pun intended.
“I have never had something that could challenge me in this way, and neither has Alejandro,” Cruise said about starring in “Digger,” the black comedy from two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu (“Birdman,” “The Revenant”).
Described as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” the Warner Bros. film is Iñárritu’s first English-language movie since “The Revenant.” Cruise stars as Digger Rockwell, sporting a thick Southern accent, a pot belly and thinning white hair (fashioned in an unconvincing combover) to play “the most powerful man in the world,” a billionaire whose company may have set off an ecological disaster that could also spark a nuclear war.

‘Digger’ Trailer: Tom Cruise Spent Days Listening to Alejandro G. Iñárritu Read Him the Script

Tom Cruise is known to be a student of film, the rare movie star who likes to speak at length about camera lenses and the crafts behind filmmaking. But one secret to his success? Getting directors to read to him aloud so he can better understand their visions.
He says he’s done this with multiple directors, including Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the filmmaker behind Cruise’s upcoming prestige play Digger.
“Alejandro took several days during which he was just reading the script to me and I’m listening to everything that’s in his mind, so that I can understand that, and then I know how to contribute to it, and bring that collaboration together,” Cruise said at a recent trailer event launch for Digger on the Warner Bros. lot.
