Two ships sank. More were struck. What's happening in the Black Sea?

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

Tensions in the Black Sea are at their highest since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, experts say, following four attacks on ships in recent days.

The eastern European shipping channel has long been a front in the war, but tensions have now spread west toward two North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member states.

Earlier this week, a Turkish cargo ship carrying Ukrainian corn caught fire and sank just outside Romania's territorial waters, leading to the deaths of two people.

Ship sinks and crew missing after Black Sea drone attack

A civilian cargo ship has sunk and its crew is missing after being attacked by drones in the Black Sea, Bulgarian officials say.

A second vessel – carrying grain – was also hit within Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said. Its 18 crew were rescued.

Radev did not say who was behind the attacks, which come as Russia intensifies strikes in the Black Sea, particularly the eastern side, as part of its war against Ukraine.

Moscow has not commented on the latest incident, a day after it was accused by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of striking a civilian vessel carrying corn. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the attacks were "unacceptable".

Bulgaria's prime minister says the attack complicates shipping in the Black Sea, which has been hit with the growing fallout from the Ukraine–Russia war.

Bulgarian authorities are searching for the missing crew of a ship that sank in the Black Sea after drones hit two vessels, amid fears over Russian hybrid warfare.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said "sea and air drones" attacked two merchant vessels about 70 nautical miles east of the coastal town of Byala.

He did not know who carried out the attack, but said if the Russia–Ukraine war was "not brought to an end in time, it will continue to expand its geographical scope and increase the risk of even a global conflict".
