ATP/WTA: savouring the final harvest
Lorenzo Musetti, Daniil Medvedev, Tallon Griekspoor, Elena Rybakina and Katerina Siniakova all reaped the rewards of their hard work this weekend.
The autumn harvest continues. Despite the fatigue accumulated throughout the season and the growing importance of every result as the Race to the season-ending Masters intensifies, the stars of the ATP and WTA Tours once again delivered plenty of drama and entertainment across Europe and Asia last week.
Before heading to the final Masters 1000 event of the season at the Plenitude Arena, several ATP stars stopped off in Lyon for the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Few were happier about that decision than Lorenzo Musetti. Without a title since lifting the trophy in Naples in 2022, the Italian had lost each of his previous seven finals, including one in Hong Kong earlier this season.

Lorenzo Musetti ended a long drought on Sunday, defeating second-seeded Taylor Fritz 6-3 6-4 in the final of the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes in Lyon. It’s the 24-year-old Italian’s third tour-level title and his first since 2022, when he won in Hamburg and Naples. The victory also snapped a seven-match losing streak in tour-level finals.
The title run was far from easy. The sixth-seeded Lorenzo Musetti needed more than three hours to get past France’s Luca Van Assche in the quarterfinals, then saved four match points in the semifinals against countryman Flavio Cobolli. By the time he reached the final, he said, his body was aching.
