Poland arrests 4 accused of spying for Russia, charges 2 more with supplying military components

Poland has charged four people with espionage, saying they were sending information to Moscow. Two more have been accused of shipping military components to Russia.

Polish authorities said Thursday that they had arrested six people over alleged military component shipments to Russia, four of whom have been charged with espionage.

Investigators said the group illegally supplied Moscow with significant quantities of parts used to manufacture ammunition and weapons systems despite an embargo.

Four suspects, including the Russian woman, were charged with espionage and placed in pretrial detention for three months, Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW) said. The other two are subject to non-custodial restrictions.

Polish authorities detain a Russian woman and five Poles on suspicion of illegally supplying weapons components to Russia

Officers from Poland’s Internal Security Agency have detained six people on suspicion of working for Russian intelligence services, Rzeczpospolita reported.

Five of those detained are Polish citizens ages 25 to 52. The sixth is a 37-year-old Russian woman, said Tomasz Siemoniak, the minister responsible for coordinating Poland’s intelligence services.

Law enforcement authorities said the group was illegally supplying Russia with components used to manufacture weapons.

A court ordered four of the suspects held in custody. They have been charged with espionage. The other two were released under court-ordered restrictions, Siemoniak said, without elaborating.

Authorities in several European countries have repeatedly said that Russian intelligence services are active on their soil. According to those statements, Russian operatives frequently use intermediaries to pay locals to carry out tasks. The head of Britain’s MI5, for example, said that Russian intelligence services were “scrambling to pay criminals to do their bidding.”
