Could this be the last Bonfire Night for noisy fireworks?

Bangers, rockets and screamers have long been part of Bonfire Night – but the traditional celebrations might sound a little different next year.

The government is currently considering reducing the noise limit for fireworks by 50% for those bought in shops for private use, after pressure from campaigners concerned about the impact on nervous animals and people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Professionally organised displays would continue to have no maximum limit provided the noise level is not harmful to human health.

About 20 million people enjoy fireworks at home every year, according to industry figures.

Andy Hubble, of the British Fireworks Association (BFA), said displays had already been getting quieter and a balance must be struck to prevent a black market in noisy fireworks springing up.

Firework noise limit should be drastically cut to protect wild animals, UK government told

Ministers urged to go further than proposed cut to 110 decibels to ease acute stress on birds and other animals

Campaigners are calling on the UK government to protect the welfare of wild animals by cutting the maximum noise level of fireworks sold to the public from 120 to 90 decibels.

The Center for Wild Animal Welfare (CWAW) has said lowering the limit to 90dB – which is about one-eighth of the loudness of 120dB – would help to protect millions of wild animals from acute stress by reducing the area over which a firework disturbs surrounding wildlife.

This would help prevent incidents of harm, such as mass temporary displacement and fatal collisions among birds, that can occur during fireworks displays, it says.

The dynamic landscape of current events often brings forth significant discussions. Monitoring these developments provides crucial insights.
