‘Marty Supreme’s Josh Safdie & Ronald Bronstein On Working Sans Benny; ’48 Hrs.’ & Making Pic Where “No One Has Control Of Their Own Lives” – Crew Call Podcast

Following the success of the Safdie brothers’ Uncut Gems, the siblings were ultimately drawn into different directions ultimately as filmmakers, with Benny gravitating toward the Dwayne Johnson MMA project The Smashing Machine and Josh, along with the duo’s scribe collaborator Ronald Bronstein, to an original tale of a post-World War II global ping-pong champ in Marty Supreme.

On today’s Crew Call, Josh Safdie makes it clear there’s no bad blood between him and his bro. “People always want drama,” he tells us. He also explains what happened to the brothers’ 48 Hrs. redo at Paramount.

Marty Supreme lit up like a Christmas three this past weekend with a per-theater average near $146,000, the best YTD and post-Covid, on its way to $875K at six NYC and L.A. theaters. The pic further expands this week on Christmas.

The Safdies’ ‘48 Hrs’ Script Was Too “Original” for Paramount: “This Isn’t A Remake”

This year’s 12th edition of the Scary Movies festival at Film at Lincoln Center premiered Ari Aster’s extended version of “Midsommar” this past Saturday.

This project seems to have gotten lost in the ether. Back in 2017, Josh and Benny Safdie had been tasked by Paramount to reboot “48 Hrs,” with Jerrod Carmichael eyed to star. The brothers were coming off the acclaim of “Good Time,” but the project is dead—and, no surprise, the reason is that the script they submitted didn’t read like a remake.

In a recent conversation for Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, filmmaker Josh Safdie and his writing partner Ronnie Bronstein—the duo behind Good Time and Uncut Gems—opened up about what ultimately happened to their planned remake of 48 Hrs.

Ronald Bronstein premiered his feature Frownland at South by Southwest the same year as Josh Safdie’s short We’re Going to the Zoo played, and he felt a pang of insecurity when he saw it. “I was like, ‘Oh, my God, there’s somebody also vying for the same kind of immediacy,” said the veteran writer-editor. “It was like my feet were made of lead; this guy was like a helium balloon.” Back in New York City, Josh introduced himself to Bronstein and convinced him to play a character based on his own father. Bronstein helped write and edit the project, which […]

Sydney’s new fish market will join the world’s biggest as an attraction

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

Fish have been traded for millennia. There is evidence of sophisticated seafood markets in China dating back more than 3000 years. Jerusalem’s Fish Gate is referenced in the Old Testament. In Australia, the fish traps at Brewarrina (Baiame’s Ngunnhu) in outback NSW – estimated to be anywhere from several thousand to up to 40,000 years old – also had trading aspects to them.

For contemporary seaside communities, fish markets are integral to local identity, and none display that relationship more prominently – or more proudly – than Sydney, where the working harbour colours every aspect of life and the fruits of the fresh catch appear on tables and menus as everything from easy family meals to exquisite fine dining.

Here is what to know about Trump's most recent holiday order:

Some employees may still have to report to work, at the discretion of agency leaders, according to Trump's order. Private businesses can decide to give their employees time off, but they are not obligated to by law.

Emma, Bruce and their family have been facing the challenging reality of the Die Hard actor's declining health in the wake of his diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD) and the holidays, she says, are particularly difficult.

In a new post on her blog, Emma, 47, admitted that "the holidays look different now" and while there is still space for joy, that joy now coexists with grief.

"Traditions that once felt somewhat effortless require planning – lots of planning. Moments that once brought uncomplicated joy may arrive tangled in a web of grief," she wrote.

Breaking Bad, Pluribus creator on secrecy, hive minds and AI in art

Carol (Rhea Seehorn) is one of the only free-thinking people left on Earth in Pluribus. (Supplied: Apple TV+)

Right up until its series premiere in October, people didn't know what Apple TV's latest show Pluribus was about.

They knew it starred Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul); they knew it was the brainchild of television royalty Vince Gilligan; they knew it had something to do with cheery yet eerie smiling petri dishes.

But the narrative of the series, which was green-lit for two seasons before it even went to air, was a mystery.

In a TV landscape where new original shows often have to scream to be acknowledged, Pluribus went quiet.

The new series from the creator of Breaking Bad is already No. 1 on Apple TV+ and the reviews are unanimous

Vince Gilligan swaps meth labs for manufactured bliss in Pluribus, a sleek Apple TV+ original that has critics purring. Set in a world calmed by a virus that enforces happiness and non-violence, the series follows Carol, one of just twelve people who can still feel everything. The mix of high-concept satire and sly humor has propelled it to the top of the platform, with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score to boot. This bright apocalypse is already hitting a nerve.

Vince Gilligan returns to series television with Pluribus, and the streaming landscape has taken notice. Debuting on Apple TV+ this November, the show rapidly climbed to the number one position on the service, rewarding longtime fans with the precise storytelling they expect.

In “Pluribus,” Groupthink Spells the End of Art

There are no working artists in Vince Gilligan’s Pluribus. Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn), the show’s protagonist, used to be a successful romantasy novelist, but then a virus of unknown origin swept across the globe, killing millions and uniting its infected survivors into a kind of peaceful, planetary hive mind. Carol was inexplicably spared, along with 12 otherwise unrelated individuals, but she hasn’t really been in a writing mood since the end of the world/dawn of the utopia. The hive mind—which is what I’ll call the shared consciousness of most of the other people on Pluribus—is keen on advancing scientific research as well as pursuing innovations in logistics. But, at least in our limited view of them, it doesn’t seem that the hive mind has any interest in composing symphonies or painting landscapes or, say, writing prestige streaming series. Members of the hive mind methodically gobble up the nutrients they need to survive; the individuals order food and products and services from an essentially limitless menu that the hive mind is eager to fulfill for them. But no one is creating anything. Everyone on Earth is a pure consumer now.

Ethan Hawke Turns in Stunning Performance as Lyricist Lorenz Hart in ‘Blue Moon,’ Talks It Up at the Riviera Theatre

My already high esteem for Ethan Hawke bumped up a few notches after catching his moving portrayal of tragic jazz legend Chet Baker, in the vastly underrated 2015 Canadian film Born to be Blue. Hawke’s latest triumph finds him deep in the shoes and addled brain of another legendary musician lyricist, Lorenz Hart, in another “blue” film, Blue Moon. Hawke nails both characterizations, with empathy and savvy to suit.

Hart and Baker are both American musical icons with sad life stories and diverse personalities — Baker, the laconic matinee idol felled by drugs and Hart, the acerbically witty partner of Richard Rogers, literally felled by drink. In Blue Moon, we join Hart’s saga at its dismal endpoint, with our protagonist staggering drunkenly in an alley way off of Broadway, in the rain, meeting his untimely finale at age 48.

Chasing The Gold: Interview: ‘Blue Moon’: Ethan Hawke on the inventiveness of Richard Linklater

Ethan Hawke says his journey with filmmaker Richard Linklater has led to the “role of a lifetime” playing Lorenz Hart in Blue Moon. The two have been collaborating for years. Audiences got to watch Jesse (Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) fall in love and then realize the reality of staying with a “soul mate” in the Before Trilogy. Hawke reprised his role as Jesse in the mixed media animation, Waking Life. He spent twelve years filming Boyhood. Hawke is in two of Linklater’s lesser-known works: The Newton Boys and Tape.

Nadine Whitney: You’ve spent a lot of time with Richard. He’s a genre chameleon in a similar manner to you and your choice of roles. Are you ever surprised by his ideas?

Revisiting Lorenz Hart – The Poet of Broadway

Before Rodgers and Hammerstein there was Rodgers and Hart yet most people know very little of Lorenz Hart even though they would have listened to many of his songs in every decade since the 1920s. His repertoire has been widely performed and recorded by generations of stars from Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra to Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga and many singers of renown.

Richard Linklater’s newly released biopic Blue Moon has generated a renewed interest and introspection into his life and work. Linklater refers to the film “as a little howl into the night of an artist being left behind.” The film centres on the opening night of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma.

‘The Odyssey’ Trailer Drops: Matt Damon Battles To Return Home In Christopher Nolan Epic

The first trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s feature take of Homer’s The Odyssey is here, and yet the highly anticipated movie has already sold out 70MM Imax tickets at AMC and Regal cinemas.

Matt Damon is seen here as Odysseus, King of Ithaca, leading his soldiers home after the Trojan War. There’s barely a glimpse of a monster in the trailer, but per the poem which is set around eighth century BCE, he faces Polyphemus the Cyclops, Sirens, the nymph Calypso and the witch goddess Circe in the treacherous oceans. If anything, there’s a lot of ocean and a lot of shipwreck with Odysseus and troops inside the Trojan Horse.

Odyssey trailer brings the myth to vivid life

“After years of war, no one could stand between my men and home. Not even me.”

Director Christopher Nolan won two well-deserved Oscars for 2023’s Oppenheimer, and Hollywood was soon buzzing about what his next project might be. A vampire period piece, perhaps? Or maybe a reboot of 1983’s Blue Thunder or British 1960s spy series The Prisoner? Instead, Nolan chose to adapt one of the greatest epic sagas in history: Homer’s Odyssey. At long last, Universal has released the first official trailer for Nolan’s The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon as the wandering Ithacan king. Frankly, it looks appropriately epic.

First footage of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey released online

Trailer shows Matt Damon as the Greek hero, with Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus

The first trailer has been released online for Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey.

Starring Matt Damon as the classic Greek hero, the trailer offers a series of shots of a bearded Damon as he sets out to return from the fall of Troy as his gravelly voiceover announces: “After years of war … no one could stand between my men … and home … not even me.”

The trailer also provides brief glimpses of Anne Hathaway as Odysseus’s wife Penelope and of Tom Holland as his son Telemachus, as Odysseus battles storms and other obstacles on his way back to Ithaca.
