Kaylee McKeown had one of her world records broken. It could be a blessing in disguise

Olympic great Kaylee McKeown has revealed she won’t race internationally for the remainder of the year and says losing her 50-metre backstroke world record has lit a fire inside her ahead of a historic quest for glory at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The 25-year-old, who missed the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and Pan Pacific Championships in California due to glandular fever, is prioritising her health and will sit out World Cup events in October, as well as the World Short Course Championships in China in December.

McKeown, a five-time Olympic gold medallist, said earlier this month she hoped to be back racing on the world stage later this year, but she and her coach, Michael Sage, have agreed to instead target next year’s longcourse world championships in Budapest.

‘Hungrier than ever’: Star’s vow after health scare

Real Housewives, spring cleaning and three dogs – that was Kaylee McKeown’s recovery before targeting an unprecedented LA28 backstroke three-peat.

Under Armour Launches New Brand Platform Centered on Commit, Spotlighting the Growth and Rewards Found in Sport

SINGAPORE, Aug. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Under Armour today launched "Commit", its new brand platform that brings to life the commitment stories and moments of athletes who keep showing up for the sports they love.

The platform reflects Under Armour's belief that what draws people back to the track, the court, the gym and the field goes beyond results. It is the strength, growth, freedom, joy and fulfillment discovered when they truly commit to something they believe in.

While sports narratives have long spotlighted championships, records and breakthroughs, Under Armour is turning its attention to what happens before the outcome: the first breath of cold air at the start of an early run, the instinct to take one more rep after training ends, the courage to get back up after a fall. For Under Armour, commitment is never a decision made in a single moment: it's written into the stories of showing up, again and again.

A red fox found in suburban Adelaide is suspected to have been infected with the H5 bird flu, South Australia's Department of Primary Industries and Regions says.

More than 300 infection events have been recorded across the country since the first case was detected in June.

The test needs to be confirmed by the CSIRO's Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness in Geelong.

South Australian authorities say they have five new suspected cases of bird flu in the state, including a red fox in Osborne, in metropolitan Adelaide, as they warn pet owners to restrict the movement of their cats and dogs.

Scientists have warned deadly H5 bird flu could cause “carnage” for Australia’s seal and sea lion populations after detection of the virus in long-nosed fur seals in South Australia.

SA confirmed Australia’s first case in a mainland mammal on Saturday after a dead long-nosed fur seal found at Beachport on the Limestone Coast tested positive for H5N1.

The state government announced a second suspected case on Monday in a dead long-nosed fur seal found on the Pages Islands, off Kangaroo Island, with results from CSIRO testing pending.

Backyard bird feeding could be a bird flu ‘superspreader’. An expert explains

Backyard bird feeding is one of our country’s most popular pastimes. Research reveals about half of Australian households feed wild birds, with many people doing so daily.

However, this practice could act as a superspreader event – where a disease infects an unusually high number of people or animals – of the H5N1 virus. This deadly strain of bird flu has already decimated wild bird and mammal populations worldwide. It is now spreading across Australia, most recently killing more than 1,000 crested terns and a long-nosed fur seal, the first detection in a mainland mammal.

Although many Australians feed wild birds, the practice is controversial. This is mainly due to concerns about people offering unsuitable foods and birds becoming dependent on humans.

From the outside, the Myrtle Beach-based Millers appeared to have a picture-perfect marriage. Mica Miller was a beautiful pastor’s wife whose husband, church leader John-Paul Miller, led a devout congregation. But the Solid Rock Church community did not know that behind closed doors, Mica and John-Paul had a tumultuous relationship, and Mica would ultimately be found dead in a state park with a gunshot wound to her head, after telling authorities she planned to take her own life. The next day, on April 27, 2024, John-Paul took the stage at Solid Rock to share the news: The congregation was now without a creative director to lead the worship, youth, and women’s ministry, and he was without a wife.

Death of the Pastor's Wife Review: Netflix’s Haunting True-Crime Series Is More About Control Than Mystery

Death of the Pastor’s Wife Review: Netflix’s three-part documentary series is a harrowing reminder of never jumping too deep into anything that skewers your worldview… and the need to change laws surrounding what constitutes torture and harassment, especially between spouses. Death of the Pastor’s Wife follows Mica Miller’s untimely and unfair death in 2024, which was ruled a suicide and the disturbing life that she had to endure at her husband, Pastor John-Paul Miller’s, hands preceding it.

Disturbing probably doesn’t even cover the sheer helplessness and mind-numbing fear that might come over viewers as they watch the documentary unfold, showcasing a “godly” man’s sick and twisted expectations of someone who is supposed to be his partner. It’s a reminder to keep your wits about you and never submit yourself to anyone, regardless of how much you love them, and to keep yourself surrounded by others and ask for help when you need it.

What Happened to Mica Miller? Pastor Charged After Her Death

The 2024 death of Pastor John-Paul Miller's wife was ruled a suicide, but he faces charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators, to which he pleaded not guilty.

In April 2024, the death of 30-year-old Mica Miller at a North Carolina state park drew national attention after reports emerged that the pastor’s wife had repeatedly contacted police about harassment and said she feared for her life.

Authorities ultimately ruled Mica’s death a suicide and said there was no evidence that her estranged husband, John-Paul Miller, was involved in her death. But the investigation did not end there.

Chinese teens are turning to mind-numbing drugs to 'run away from reality'

At 14, *Xiaomei, a high-performing student from a coastal province in China, decided to overdose on cough medication.

She wanted to impress an older boy who told her it would help her relax. The tablets were usually only available with a doctor's prescription, but she managed to buy them online.

At first she found that they made her a bit dizzy. But she was soon hooked to the slightly numb sensation, which, to her, felt like a brief respite from the pressure of looming exams. When taken in large doses, the drug can cause serious side effects, including hallucinations and impaired coordination.

A Genetic Mutation Is Making It Easier for Drug-Resistant Malaria to Spread

The main drug that has been in use for decades to combat malaria in sub-Saharan Africa is running into a problem: In recent years, researchers have become increasingly concerned that parasites are becoming less sensitive to treatment. Identifying the underlying genetic factors has become an urgent priority.

In an attempt to identify the reason for drug-resistant malaria, a team led by Brown University researchers conducted whole-genome analysis of 157 malaria parasite samples selected from specimens collected in Uganda between 2016 and 2024. The work, published in Nature Medicine this week, shows evidence that mutations in a gene that encodes a protein called px1, which had previously received little attention, is likely responsible for the rise in drug resistance.

Major early learning centre at risk of going under

Education provider Edge Early Learning has collapsed into voluntary administration, putting as many as 70 childcare centres across the country at risk of being shut.

In a statement, the group said Craig Shepard, David Johnstone and Stacey Clisby from KordaMentha being appointed as voluntary administrators.

“We understand that this may be a confusing and stressful development for families who rely upon Edge Early Learning to provide care for their children,” Edge Early Learning said in a statement.

It added that there will be no immediate changes to the opening hours or staffing arrangements at the learning centres.

“We are continuing to operate all centres on a business-as-usual basis,” it said.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe on secret trip in Russia

CIA Director John Ratcliffe is in Moscow, Russia, for meetings, sources familiar with the situation told CBS News on Tuesday.

News of his trip comes after a U.S. Air Force Boeing C-17A Globemaster III transport plane was spotted at a Moscow airport, along with a U.S. diplomatic motorcade. Neither the U.S. nor Russian governments has commented on the identity of the U.S. official in Russia or the purpose of the visit.

It appears to be Ratcliffe's first known trip to Russia as CIA director, though he has maintained contact with Russian intelligence counterparts.

Ahead of Ratcliffe's trip, the U.S. told Ukraine that a senior delegation would be traveling to Moscow and asked it to suspend strikes until the delegation's departure, according to a senior Ukrainian official.

Australia's largest supermarket chain, Woolworths, has seen its profit surge by 18 per cent in the last financial year to $1.138 billion. Despite this, July inflation figures show annual price pressures easing across the economy.

Meanwhile, one of Australia's largest private credit investment managers has limited redemptions on its $2.3 billion secured property loan fund.

It released its half-year profit results this morning, with first half revenue, recurring revenue, and gross profit margin all up.

But its underlying EBITDA was -$12.4 million (-256% on the previous corresponding period), with lower gross margin and increased fixed base for scaled operations, and increased wages and sales and marketing costs, and it reported a statutory loss after tax of $32.2 million (compared with $2.1 million profit after tax in PCP), after individually significant items of $15 million.

The Aussie dollar surged and share market stuttered following the release of inflation figures in a clear sign traders are genuinely entertaining the chance of another interest rate hike.

Wednesday’s data put inflation for the 12 months to July at 3.5 per cent, and the all-important trimmed mean – the RBA’s preferred underlying measure – at 3.6 per cent.
